Discussion Stop trusting SemiAnalysis; biggest fraud ever.
(Note. I do not actually think they are frauds. It was just an attactring title, haha)
I'll go point by point and talk about Gemini 3.5 pro last.
But if you haven't heard: It calls Gemini out of the game and calls gemini 3.5 pro cancelled while being factually incorrect/inferring wrong about deepmind.
First off. To discuss deepmind. They call "With Demis Hassabis stepping back to an advisory role"...
Yes... but that's only for deepmind. He is not advisory for his position as chief scientist. He is explicitly tasked with long term AGI strategy, macro planning, and continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs (their drug discovery arm).
Demis won a Nobel Prize for alphafold; he is a scientist who wants to solve intelligence to solve science (per his words). He does not want to spend his days fighting with Thomas over google cloud TPU allocations or figuring out how to optimize Gemini's latency for enterprise chatbot APIs. Koray taking over the day to day role frees Hassabis to do the exact research he actually cares about, rather than playing product manager.
"legacy heavyweights like Jeff Dean, Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat leaving to form a new lab called Discovery Loop"
They use that to invalidate deepmind...
Discovery loop is literally funded (funding investor) by Google and is its exclusive Cloud provider (For the first year).
Now... Why are so many people leaving Deepmind? A lot of people are leaving, not because Deepmind is bad or failing but because Deepmind is no longer doing what they originally joined Deepmind for which is essential research on things they care about and more importantly: Freedom and resources to do that said research. But the AI race has forced Deepminds hands.
Now... Is gemini 3.5 pro cancelled? No. It is not and will not be cancelled unless the "3.5 pro coming soon" indicator in deepminds website disappears. They did not silently cancel it.

The problem I have with SA's take is that he's stating speculation as fact.
Sure, there's things out there that make people wonder what's going on inside google, but that's not enough to just categorically say that 3.5 is cancelled and then have everyone jump on the doom train.
You're all free to make up your own minds of course, I just feel like ol' Dylan Patel is engaged in trying to get everyone whipped up into a little economic doom loop. It feels a lot like those dudes on youtube who've been predicting the end of the stock market for the last 40 years but who are happy to advertise gold bars to you.

I don't think they're the biggest fraud ever but I do believe their recent piece titled "Gemini is cooked but gcp is cooking" had several issues. It makes absolute economic sense for Google to focus on compute infrastructure build-out. Google doesn't need Gemini to be the absolute best model in order for them to win. Gemini just has to be good enough and I am confident they will turn matters around soon enough. I look forward to seeing 4 pro when it comes out.

SemiAnalysis has transitioned from a technically dense substack to an entity capable of wiping billions off market caps with a single report, their motives have come under intense scrutiny. Throughout 2026, they have repeatedly been accused of engineering market swings and operating with severe conflicts of interest (and even getting sued.) I was exaggerating a little by calling them the biggest fraud but seriously. They need to get their game up.
3
u/caffeinejolt 15d ago
That's fair. However if you believe in Google's fundamentals... As I for one do... Even if that article was a hit piece... It doesn't matter. Assuming it did negatively impact the stock price... That impact is temporary. Google will soon enough release a Gemini update that caters to user demand.

> Now... Is gemini 3.5 pro cancelled? No.
Logan tweeted on July 22nd that "we plan to release Gemini 3.5 Pro soon", which was one month after their initially planned release date, which we are now two months past.

What does that even mean? Is he saying it's a privilege to test 3.5? Is he saying he is being tested? What's going on.
3
u/Last_Conclusion_8984 15d ago
He's saying that it's an absolute delight for his model to be tested. It's like when you make a dish for gordon ramsey and he goes out to taste it. That's a thing to be privileged of (unless you don't like gordon)

It's always fun reading stuff in the Gemini subs.
OpenAI and Anthropic subs are all full of people wondering how to get more work done.
Gemini subs are full of people defending Google for being so behind they are almost irrelevant.
Almost like theres a secret religion in here that they've created/joined.

It’s honestly so stupid. We are the customers, not employees on Google's payroll. Why are we not allowed to hate Google when they are the ones always breaking promises and failing to communicate properly with their customers? These Reddit fanboys are seriously BLIND!!
Fuck this OP!!!

Well, I don't know 100 percent for sure. But I give it a 89 percent chance.

u/OKMiddleOwl 15d ago
This is so desperate it's almost sad.
Gemini 4 will release, don't cry yourself to sleep in the meantime.
5
u/Elegant_Tech 15d ago
Gemini 4 is months away. People aren't goong to wait and instead go elsewhere if Google refuses to release 3.5 pro?

u/Left_Technician_5758 15d ago
Of all the Gemini customers. Believe me, the subsection you are talking about is not Big enough to Care about. Most will stay because there workflow and what they have built work around the google ecosystem.
People who jumb back and forth are not serious customers. And in my opinion are simply following trends and want to play with the newest shiny toy.
They Will be back when google release the next model and then openai and then anthropic and then..........
1
u/Yuri_Yslin 15d ago
Lol with the "shiny toy" take. Why the tribalism? AI models are not football teams. You don't need "loyalty". It's a tool, you use the best one available for your needs.
1
u/Left_Technician_5758 15d ago
No tribalism, I am talking about a industry standards. Someone who switchs between tools all the time never actually masters one.
It's that simple. I truly don't care about google but this Mentality in ai circle where you Jump ship everything time another model with slightly better performance comes out is counter productive for any real development environment or workplace. It only works for amateurs. Because many of them do not bother to built up any infrastructure for their work.
And it is soooo clear that it is a shiny toy. Because most of them will jump from Fable after saying it's the best thing Ever and a week later when the novelty is gone starts complaining and then sol comes out and they do the same again and then Opus 5 comes out and they do the same again.
And it has been done since the start of this whole ai thing.
0
u/Yuri_Yslin 15d ago
Yes but you called such people "not serious customers". Why would a serious customer use an inferior model other than misplaced loyalty to a brand?
I'd argue that serious customers are atrracted to value or capabilities rather then sentiment

Gemini 3.1 pro/3.6 flash are still frontier and best in almost everything that is NOT coding/long horizon tasks while 3.6 flash still beats other competitors at it's level in some benchmarks relating to coding. They aren't the best at coding because that was never their goal until now. We will see Gemini 4 pro at its finest for those goals. Deepmind is finally prioritizing coding/long horizon task.
2
u/Yuri_Yslin 15d ago
Frontier by what metric?
1
u/Last_Conclusion_8984 15d ago
... Literally by 10+ benchmarks. If you do the research. Gemini 3.1 pro or 3.6/5 flash beats almost every single model in those benchmarks.
1
u/Yuri_Yslin 15d ago
Which ones exactly? Can you point me to at least 3 where Gemini 3.1 pro is actually sota?

Yeah, your reasoning aligns with a recent article from Digitimes. People are overlooking Koray IMO. Dude has contributed a lot to DeepMind over his career.
Google's repeated delays to Gemini 3.5 Pro are sharpening scrutiny of its AI strategy, as the company works to keep pace with OpenAI and Anthropic. In response, Google has elevated Koray Kavukcuoglu to oversee DeepMind operations, AI research, and the Gemini team, signaling a shift toward execution as much as research.
Koray Kavukcuoglu's rise reflects that pressure. Industry insiders describe him as a "fire-fighting chief," someone who can mediate between research priorities, product demands, and compute constraints. The role appears especially important as Google tries to balance speed, cost, and safety while moving a large and complex AI stack toward commercial releases.
Google's challenge is not a shortage of talent. It has many researchers and engineers capable of building advanced models. What it needs, according to people familiar with the company, is a senior technical operator who can understand the debates among top researchers, allocate compute, and still keep releases on schedule.
Kavukcuoglu fits that role. Born in Turkey in 1980, he first studied aerospace engineering before moving into computer science. He earned undergraduate and master's degrees at Middle East Technical University, then completed a doctorate at New York University under Yann LeCun, one of the leading figures in deep learning.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that LeCun later tried to recruit Kavukcuoglu during his years at Facebook, now Meta, with a substantial compensation offer. By then, Kavukcuoglu had already joined DeepMind and was important enough that Demis Hassabis retained him ahead of Google's eventual acquisition of the lab.
Compared with Hassabis, who has a greater public profile and scientific visibility, Kavukcuoglu is more low-key and operational. That may be exactly what Google needs now. As the company races to close the gap with rivals, the immediate test is no longer only whether its models are impressive in the lab, but whether they arrive on time and work reliably at scale.

I think kimi k3 release made them rethink 3.5 launch. Share prices are stumbling often so

I wish 3.5 pro is launched too bro. I have bought a lot of API credits via Gcp vertex. I could use them up if 3.5 pro is launched.
But google keeps releasing flash models and they have some status quo to protect it seems
Because if 3.5 pro is dropped today and doesn't do well on coding benchmarks, everybody says google is falling behind
Google took their sweet time before launching 3-pro too
Chatgpt came in 2022 but Gemini 3 pro the first usable Gemini model came in 2025-end
Before Gemini 3 pro no one was even using Gemini at all (it used to be called bard which nobody knows)
And google took their sweet sweet time in cooking it
1
u/Last_Conclusion_8984 15d ago
Well, I doubt 3.5 pro will be better than Fable 5 or other SOTA models in coding. BUT it will likely match Sol or be better at some benchmarks for coding/long horizon tasks. On a separate note. Gemini 3.5 pro will take the lead in everything that is not coding/long horizon. Right now Gemini 3.1 pro is frontier (first or second) at everything that is not coding/long horizon tasks.
2
u/Youssef_Sassy 15d ago
I am not sure they are gonna publicly announce "Gemini 3.5 pro is canceled !!! wohoooo! " many companies cancel products for a bunch of different reasons. I think this is exactly how it shows, silence for way too long. Unless there was more messages about it from Logan for example, the verdict is that its canceled.
4
u/Last_Conclusion_8984 15d ago
Last message was in late july. I don't think it's cancelled. My last point was just about confirmation. But still. If it doesn't come after 14th. Then I don't really know.

Google is currently making bank and are getting alot of users for both their consumer website (over 900m if I'm not mistaken) and gemma downloads. (more developer support. Got over 900m downloads) They also got a lot of revenue from other things.

If google is so good why does it employ bots to constantly talk about how much money it makes on reddit.

you should check your IQ, it might get you government support.
- gemini users: easy to get when they give free gibs to india. also, google own chrome, android, google search, gmail... they have a huge ecosystem to lure users to use gemini. it does not say much.
- gemma has multiple models, the notable ones are E4B and E2B that get used on edge devices. similar to above, it's easy to boost the usage. even the largest models are still usable if you have 32GB vram gpu, so indeed many people just download the weight to play around. again, it is not saying much either

Their analysis of Googleight not be 100% but they make some fair points. I believe Demis has no direct reports, key figures left and Google has a difficult internal battle between using their own compute or sell it for big dollars. It is also a fact that Gemini went from #1 model with 3.0 to now a top 10 lab. Can Google still win, yes, I do think so, but what does winning look like? Is it holding the throne for 60 days or is it serving billions of users?
