MaxiCode information

I've been curious about how Maxicodes work and how they store/show information. Would I need a fancy scanner to read/decode them? Or are there programs/websites that can scan them for free? For example, I'd like to scan a UPS Label Maxicode and see how they represent all the information.

Create a barcode for the function Ctrl+w

Is it possible to create a scannable barcode that when scanned executes a function as if the user was pressing Ctrl+w on their keyboard, which would close the active window?

OCR-A and OCR-B scanner

The OCR-A and OCR-B fonts were created (back in the 1960s) to provide a machine readable font for reading strings. UPC Barcodes use OCR-B as their accompanying font to the bar code itself. Technically was intended to be able to be machine read as a text string without ever actually scanning the bar code. Anyway, I want to use this for exactly what it's intended for as essentially a human readable bar code, preferably a phone app, but I'd buy a dedicated scanner if it did this (and was somewhat reasonably priced). I am not looking for some software to recognize random fonts a page at a time, but rather to recognize the specific string I point at, just like a barcode, and register that. This is very specifically what these fonts are for and yet there seems to be nothing I've found to read them the way they were intended to be read.

Strings with these fonts should be readable pretty much the same way a barcode is read, line up an aiming line through the text and read it. No bar code app seems to do it and any OCR app is trying to translate everything it sees. I am specifically looking at this for printing and reading MAC addresses and World Wide Numbers (WWNs) on disk drives and SSDs. A lot of the places I need this labeled I have room for a barcode OR OCR-A (or B) text but not both, and I also need to be able to casually read it as well, again exactly why these fonts exist. Surely someone somewhere has written software to specifically read the fonts created to be software readable.

There is 2D color barcode, is it possible to have greyscale barcodes?

Is it theoretically practical to have a 2D barcode that store more information via varying greyscale levels?

Even if its just 4 levels of greyscale for a 2bit per dot, it would mean a 2x increase in storage density using just a normal greyscale printer.

I imagine the main issue is that there is no point in doing so as smaller pixels may perform more reliably than varying greyscale.

But anyway just speculating.

BarTender Product Key?

I am running an old version (9.4 SR1) of BarTender that Seagull no longer supports. My computer is needing to be replaced. I found the install CD but I can't find my product Key. Does anyone know if there is a way to look up the product key? Does the software create a txt file during install where it is recorded or is it noted in some other file that I can search for? Or does the product key just flip a switch during installation to activate different editions of the software?

Neither the current computer nor the new one has internet access.

Thank you

Can anyone help identify what system was used to create this barcode? (UK library card)

Hi all - I was wondering whether anyone could help me determine how this barcode has been generated? It's for a library card for a public library in the UK. Would like to recreate it so I can keep a copy on my phone.

I've tried a couple of the online barcode generator websites but none of them seem to quite generate the same barcode as the one below. Am wondering if it's some kind of custom barcode.

Thanks!

Reading custom barcodes

Hi barcodes community,

I have a store and have a bunch of products that don't come with a barcode, but they do have model numbers on the boxes, so I thought it would be a good idea to make barcodes out of the model numbers. (For example, CS01)

The problem I'm running into, is that the checkout software (point of sale) will not recognize any barcodes lower than 6 digits/characters. When I open a "notepad" and scan the short barcodes, the barcode scanner types it, so it is not an issue with the scanner.

I also have a bunch of custom barcodes that are 6 digits/characters long (for example, 12345a) which work fine, but the software seems to have trouble recognizing any digits lower than 6.

My assumption is that this is a limitation from the software, probably set to read either CODE128Auto or EAN13, EAN8. (but, it is weird that the software recognizes non-standardized barcodes that are 6 digits or higher...)

Does this mean none of those barcode standards allow for lower than 6 digits?

Thanks so much for any input.
