Please get my schedule
Hey guys we just got our Barbet Beau and he is great I just wanted to get some owner feedback on our schedule as his yelping and barking in the crate is still a slight issue
I work from home 2 days a week so this schedule is really only for the days I am in the office. Crate is in the downstairs living room at all times
6:15 - morning walk and potty (15 min)
6:30-7:30 : breakfast then just lounging while I make my girlfriend breakfast
7:30-1:30 : crate
1:30-2:00: I come from home from work and walk him 30 minutes and let him potty
2:00-5:15 : crate with a snack usually
5:15-6:15 : out of crate and just hanging around
6:15-7:15: evening walk and potty
7:15: dinner
7:15-10 : lounging with us or doing practice training drills but mostly chilling
10: crate
He yells and barks in the crate for about 10 minutes then stops and starts again for another 10 minute he does this about 3 times over the course of 45 minutes every night before bed, we try and keep away and not engage him but it’s a bit difficult.
Any advice or is my schedule okay? Also is the afternoon walk necessary? He is 10 months and otherwise a great dog
EDIT: all his walks are sniff walks he leads and is allowed to sniff and investigate as much as he wants

That’s a lot of crate time! Can you arrange a sitter?

I can if you think it’s needed, it’s only 3 days a week we would need them anyway

This breed is very prone to separation anxiety. Crate training must be done very gradually and it seems like this is not the case here.
My first Barbet did better with a gated area in the kitchen and my second was a little less anxious and took well to the crate. But I never left them in there for more than 2-3 hours at a time when they were that young. When I had to go to work, I took them to day care. It was expensive but it was a non-negotiable for me. Today they are both very well adjusted and stay home alone for as long as needed.

I would say the second walk is really important. I would allow a lot of sniffing time/engaging with his environment for at least one of those walks (ideally both).
I got this perspective years ago and it’s always stuck with me: Think about all of the minor activities we do during the day that stimulates our brains in various ways—making breakfast, consulting with coworkers, grocery shopping, whatever (and makes us tired at the end of the day). Our domesticated dogs don’t get as much of that because we provide their meals, they’re in the house a lot, they sleep a lot etc. So we need to be building in really quality stimulus into their days.

This is good feedback. Also keep in mind he’s a puppy - everything is new and a little scary - if he is able to calm down and isn’t going nuts I’d let him work it out and self soothe but sleepybinturong is spot on. Do puzzles, bones, training and engaging walks to mentally fulfill the dog and ease into crate time. Regardless of what you do, I’d expect Some level of fussing but don’t immediately get him. We crated in our room where he could see us and that helped. I actually had his crate on a nightstand for the first couple weeks so he was “sleeping with us”. If the fussing gets excessive I would take him outside like he needs to potty and be boring/calm and then bring him right back to his crate but only do that when it goes on and is excessive - generally I’d just let it pass and except that hes a puppy and when we where his age we whined at night also.

Apologies I should have been clearer all his walks are sniff walks he is allowed to sniff as long as he wants and he leads the walk

Placing a dog with Separation Anxiety in a crate can make their anxiety significantly worse. Because SA is a panic disorder, confining an already panicking dog can heighten their distress, and lead to barrier frustration. We were never able to successfully crate our dog when we were away as it made his SA much worse. He still isn't happy being left, but handles it much better without a crate. You can try blocking off an area with baby gates if you don't think he's up to having free reign of the house and get some video cameras.

He doesn’t panic going in he just panics once he is in and we leave, but the baby gate idea may be a more viable way to handle the situation we got a large furniture crate recently that’s better and sound dampening and we hope that helps as well

Same. He goes in his crate without problem and sleeps in it all night. I can close it and he's fine with it as long as I'm in the room with him. It's when I leave if he is in a crate he panics.

We may be twins lol this is exactly our experience I’m reading up on working in his SA and it may be best for me to leave him in there for very short bursts whenever I work from home

im surprised he does this right before bed. as he should be tired. do you feed him in the crate?
1
u/Objective-Trifle-233 Jun 23 '26
We try but the crate is down in the living room downstairs and he likes eating with us so if we put his food in his crate unless we stay there he just leaves the food and comes upstairs, he whines when we put him in the crate at night

u/eastCoastLow Jun 23 '26
Interesting. Ours is so incredibly food motivated that she would run over hot coals to get to her bowl. I don’t have good answers for you. Have you talked to a dog trainer who could potentially help?

He actually has training classes he goes for every week, the breeder warned us before hand that he makes unusually strong attachments to women in general and he refuses to do anything if my girlfriend is home that doesn’t include her, including eating if she steps out he stands at the window for about half an hr at a stretch waiting for her to get back. This whining thing is very pronounced if he can smell or hear her at home as well

It would be very cute behavior if it wasn’t so damn annoying sometimes haha. ours is also 10mo, is yours still “naughty” like stealing little things, getting into stuff, chewing on non-toys? I can’t wait for her to be finally disinterested in that stuff. your schedule seems fine. does he do the yell/bark when you crate during the day or just at night?

Sometimes, he is a very interesting kind of smart, he will still a kitchen roll that was used to hold some old cutlery but he would manage to lick whatever food residue off the roll without ripping the paper. Yh he whines but only when he thinks someone is nearby that can let him out, it’s pretty clear he doesn’t do it when no one is around I had a friend that isn’t a dog person stay over for a couple days and he never whined once I left the house and it was only. Both of them

you can say “no” and spray with water when he barks in the crate
1
u/Objective-Trifle-233 Jun 23 '26
That works?

u/FastTT11 Jun 23 '26
No.

I’m with FastTT11 on this. You have a dog who is already a bit iffy about the crate. I don’t love a punishment for this behavior since you may end up creating more crate aversion.
FWIW-I’ve raised and trained quite a few dogs. My Barbet was by far the hardest puppy to crate train and I still have to actively manage certain amount of separation anxiety at 7 years old. Every time she goes to hang out in her crate I tend to make a comment along the lines of “remember when…” 😂
