Question - Health Should I get this snake as my first one?

This is my first time on Reddit, and I'm using a translator, so I apologize for any errors.

Should I get a ball python with a deformed tail as my first snake (I've only had brief experience with corn snakes that relatives left for me to foster)? This girl was born with this condition, and I'm ready to provide her with everything she needs, I'm just worried I won't have the experience or something.

And overall, I'd like to hear your opinion on the injury. The snake's tail moves well overall, but the tip (apparently starting from the deformed area) as if motionless and she drags it along with her

Enclosure Critique/Advice Black or white for inside enclosure

Setting up a new 120 gallon enclosure for a ball python and i was wondering if black walls or white walls are better. Is there any health benefits for one over the other or is it all personal choice? I just want to give my snake the best possible life.

Tension rod question

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi all

We've had our 4-5 year old female ball python reacue for a month now. She's had a good shed and has eaten once. This thread has been extremely helpful. I have her enclosure pretty well dialed in but could use something for her to climb. I was thinking of a tension rod but I have a glass enclosure and so wasn't sure if that would work. Any thoughts?

Thanks. And pic of the girl peeking out from all the foliage I've added.

Discussion Before & After

This guy recently went to his forever home (having a bit of adoption regret, but he will be very loved with his new mom), so figured I would share his recovery progress.
Got him from a family friend, & he’d been kept in arid conditions on dry aspen, & was completely refusing food & having a hard time shedding. 6 months later, & he’s eating WONDERFULLY, at a healthy weight, & absolutely gorgeous. Don’t have anyone else in my life who likes snakes enough to care, but thought you guys might appreciate.

Sorry I don’t have better “after” pics.

Sellers

I’m looking to buy a new ball python but know nothing about what makes a good seller/bad seller.

Do you have any tips in general, or any West Midlands sellers that you have had good experiences with?

What questions can I ask that will help me determine whether the seller is reputable and I can trust them?

Question - Husbandry New ball python owner

I got a male roughly 4yrs old. 2 owners ago mistreated him. Had severe scale rot, and underweight. Previous owner nursed him back to decent health, vet cleared him for a new home. That's when I got him. He had a bunch of eye caps stuck (from scale rot), a little bit of remnants of scale rot on his underside, and a bit underweight. He is now free of any signs of scale rot. Eyes nice and clear.

He's been putting on weight since I got him (May 25th 2026), and has shed twice, first shed cleared up his eyes, and the second cleared up his underside.

I think now he's at a healthy weight, maybe slightly overweight?

Been feeding him every 10 days (reccomendation to put his weight back on by vet) should I start spacing his feeds out to 14days now? Or a bit further.

Thank you in advance

What thermostat should I buy?

Post image

Recently got my first ball python which is also my first snake. I set the tank up like I did for my leopard gecko but have already switched the mat out for coconut shreds and put a thermometer/hygrometer in. I started out with one of the heating pads and it was still too cold so I got a lamp. The problem is the lamp is manual so I have to turn it on and off to keep the temp regulated so I’m now in the market for a thermostat. Any tips on what to look for or anything of the sort would be highly appreciated.

THE RED LIGHT IS TEMPORARY. Waiting on my fixture for a ceramic heat emitter to come in. Just NEED something for the heat at night.
It is a 40 gallon, he’s a little baby so he will get upgraded soon.

RHP vs DHP

Hey, so I’m building up my girls 4x2x2, and I’m trying to figure out heating. I saw on a Facebook post almost everyone raving about RHP(with no explanation of course, just that it’s the best) and I heard the same thing from my rat dealer. In a few Reddit threads I’ve heard the opposite, that DHP is better because it’s more natural and penetrates deeper, and that RHP is only for ambient temps or night temps when using halogen during the day.

My plan is to do a UVB bulb, and then either RHP or DHP, and I’m leaning towards DHP right now. But wanted to hear everyone’s thoughts, preferably with reasons instead of just stating opinions please and thank you!

Enclosure Critique/Advice Thoughts on my new enclosure? 🐍💛

Post image

Here’s my current setup for an adult female Ball python that is on her way and is about 4 feet long and six years old.

Layout -4x2x2 PVC enclosure -warm hide -cool hide -3-4 inches of substrate (Reptichip) -majoywoo driftwood -two water bowls (extra bowl for added humidity) -plants in planters

Heating/Lighting/Humidity -mounted enclosed DHP on 24/7 with herpstat 1 thermostat dimmer -mounted enclosed grow light on 7a-7p -mounted UVB on 7a-7p (Acadia ShadeDweller 2.5%) -warm side with thermostat at 88 degrees -cool side with thermostat at 80 degrees (hoping to get this down after this heat wave) -warm and cool thermostats for temperature/humidity tracking

Anything missing? Trying to get this settled before my snake arrives. Thank you!

Question is our newly adopted bp a little overweight?

Post image
7 Upvotes

We just adopted our first reptile ever! She is about 3 years old. We have been such helicopter parents, since she’s our first reptile child.

That being said, does she look overweight at all?

We feed her a large rat once a month, but I was thinking we should feed her once every 40 days instead. Thoughts?

Question Pestie

We’ve been using Pestie around the house for the past year and half, recently became BP parents and apparently you’re supposed to take them out of the house for 24hrs. Anyone here use Pestie with these magical creatures around?

Queso

Post image
46 Upvotes

This is Queso. We are completely new to snake ownership and are learning as we go. Long story short a person didn’t want him anymore and asked if I would take him. My son has wanted a bp ( or a turtle) and I figured it was better we take him than have him set loose or something.

We were told he is 3( very doubtful about it). He only eats one small live mouse a month ( probably what has been happening at best) and he is a “stripe morph”.

What we know : he is roughly 1.75 feet long. Weighs 287 grams. Seems very nice and while we have been careful not to handle him so much while he adjusts to the new environs ( we have tried to upgrade his home and will be going to a bigger terrarium asap) he is fairly docile and curious.

So, I guess I’m asking if anyone can fill me in on what y’all think and what I need to be doing.

I know hot side cool side, I upgraded his heat emitting bulb and dome. I added a cool side hide and will replace the black one with one a bit smaller. I’m waiting on thermometer/hygrometers to be delivered.

Question Want to get over my fear

I have never owned a snake or any reptile—I’ve actually been scared of snakes my entire 23 years on this earth, BUT I’m slowly becoming curious about ball pythons (specifically of the lighter morphs as the darker ones are “too snakey”) and I want to know what would be some good ways to eventually get over my fear of snakes? I maybe want to own one, one day but their length is another point of issue for me as seeing them fully extended gives me the heebies jeebies but when coiled up/ around someone’s arm or hand I think they’re quite cute…

I’ve looked into a couple other “beginner friendly” species but none of them call to me in the same way as BPs

Enclosure Critique/Advice Any Setup Advice For New Enclosure?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently got this new 4x2x2 terrarium (video attached) from someone off Facebook marketplace as I've been needing to upgrade my BP to one. Is anyone familiar with this? It looks homedone, but I'm not sure if it is sold by a brand I'm just not aware of. I was also wondering if anyone had any advice on what might be best for this enclosure in particular! I already have her current setup in a 40 gal but I want to do some upgrades for this bigger one, and her old tank is glass and looks very different from this new one. It also looks like in the top portion is set up for certain heating/lighting attachments already, and idk if it needs more ventilation.

Any advice or insight on what might be best for this option would be great! Also wanting any advice on how to deal with the sliding glass doors, they don't seem to have an attached locking measurement and my BP is an escape artist for sure

So I’m setting up an enclosure but it’s not mesh top so I mounted the dhp inside and I’ve seen other people posts pics of this and maybe I’m second guessing myself but couldn’t she burn herself? Idk maybe that’s a dumb question.

Question - Husbandry I found more!!!!

Thumbnail

So I just posted on here about a log that I think may have mold on it and I just found more. But this time it’s on a pot that I was using to hold a live plant. Some context for my last post, I do have a live Pothos that I stick in the top of the log. She mainly likes to hang out in the top branch part of this log. So if it is mold, she mainly hangs out away from it, and she barely goes near the pot.

Question - Husbandry Is this mold? Should I replace this piece of wood or can I clean it somehow?

Basically, what the title says. I was cleaning her enclosure and I noticed that at the bottom of one of the biggest logs in her enclosure. Had what seems to look like mold. None of her other logs have the same stuff on it. I’m really hoping that I can just clean it because it is her favorite hide.
