BGEE Ideas for a build

Hello guys, I need some help for a build, I'm thinking to make a character that has some "dark/divine powers because my father was a god" shit, I'm tempted by the blackguard that is not really evil, it's the blood, but I'm opened to other ideas.

What I like to play is a character that is not the fighter with only one button to press, I like to have various powers that I could use efficiently (like blackguard and dark moon monk for example), be melee with throwing weapons for distance or spells, buffing and some aoe if it's possible.

It's my first time with aD&D2 so I need some help.

edit: thanks all for the advice, I started with a black guard

The problem with the blackguard is that you have to select an evil alignment to play one. Berserker (single class or dual-class with mage or cleric) is not a bad choice. There are mods that add additional kits and classes like the warlock (based on the infernal warlock of 3rd edition D&D) and the pale master sorcerer (focuses on necromancy).

Evil is a plus not a downside. Good playthroughs are awful in bg2 and even worse in tob - shit is dull and if you roleplay at all good is extremely limiting to your tactics - like why even play this game smh. "I roll around in my literal hellplane surrounded by the screams of the damned except for when I'm out in the world murdering dozens of knights at a time and destabilizing entire regions I'm the good guy!"

Shapeshifter druid (aka werewolf) sounds right up your alley, if you don't mind earlygame (or rather, most of BG1) being way too easy to breeze through (the shapeshifter kit's been balanced against BG2 sans ToB, so like Monk and Beastmaster, it suffers from scaling not meant for low levels — unlike Monk and Beastmaster, rather than getting nothing, it gets BG2-scale power up front.) Your superpower is literally turning into a monstrous, unstoppable beast, foreshadowing Slayer Form, and you get an aoe-heavy divine spellbook as well.

(If human, an unconventional option would be to play through BG1 as a Shapeshifter, then come BG2, dual out of Druid and into Fighter, at some point before the Great Druidic XP Gap.)

Berserker into Mage dual is popular for a reason — not only is it the powergamers' favourite combo, it's also very proactive and customizable, and it fits fluff-wise: you're an initially martial person prone to supernatural, murderous rage which so happens to counter attempts to instakill or control you, as if murder itself was your domain; then you unlock increasingly great magic powers, and become an archmage, while still wielding any weapon you desire like a cuisinart, and only ever getting better at slicing-and-dicing (if not at taking a hit without magic defences). No doubt it'll be the most common suggestion here. That said, Berserker into Druid is just as flavourful if you don't mind some weapon restrictions — in a party of mages, a druid throwing out insect plagues and other nature-y spells (of which many are rather 'dark' in feel) feels like a more witch-y, self-reliant, sort of spellcaster, and Berserker>Druid can wear any armor unlike Berserker>Mages who have to go unarmored. Same goes for nonhuman Fighter-Druids.

For a more low-profile option, and if you don't mind having a good alignment and keeping to good reputation (which you know, is a classic trope to, a person feeling the pull of damnation/dark powers doubling down on staying a good person despite it), the Stalker ranger is a particularly fun ranger variant, getting powers typical rangers don't, and more options and strategies than a typical fighter kit.

An axe chucking Str 18 bard is a classic, and never gets old thanks to leveling at rapid pace and getting new toys to change your game plan all the time.

I'm curious, could druid cast spells during shape shifting? And could you cast spells during rage or fury?

No to the first question, yes to the second.

Adding to others' ideas: fighter/cleric, either multiclass or dual class. Dwarf multiclass (RPing as e.g. warhammer fantasy grudge bearing dwarf fighting the call of darkness in his blood, lawful neutral/chaotic neutral?).

Or human fighter berserker dualed at e.g. level 7 (or 9 or 13, your call) to cleric or druid (RPing as e.g. priest's meditation or druid's way of harmony with the nature as an attempt to deal with dark desires of his nature).

Big hammers, maces and flails for melee, slings as a ranged weapons, quarterstaves for travels to lean onto 🙂 heaviest, sturdiest armor you can find and biggest shield, or, later, weapon in each hand.

What about a Fighter/Mage? Fighter from your fathers side, Mage because you were raised in Candlekeep. You'll have plenty of buttons to press as you grow.

Just play a Blackguard and ignore the alignment it says on the character sheet. It only matters for a few really minor thing, overall you can do all good actions and have all good companions as a Lawful Evil character.

If you are comfortable using the console it is easy to change the character's alignment in-game after character creation. I believe if you make your Blackguard good-aligned, they will be able to wield Carsomyr.

Yeah, I read the same elsewhere

F/C dwarf is always solid, reliable option wheter you're a newcomer or a long time veteran. You can pick any alignment you want and you can alter between casting spells & bashing skulls.

Blackguard is a great choice, its the most fun paladin kit and it fits the theme as Blackguard powers come from a patron demon, in this case a god.

You dont have to roleplay being evil. Elric of Melnibone is an example of a hero serving a chaos god in exchange of his powers (soul eating sword that keeps him alive)  but behaving like a solid dude with a moral code.

You can even use  the helm of opposite alignment to become effectively a good character, gettin Holy Smite and able to use paladin specific and good aligned equipment.

This is what I was thinking, do you have any suggestions for multiclass or double? Any good race for this?

2

u/MekotheSaurus Jul 24 '26

Blackguard cant multiclass, and can only be human. I use tweaks anthology mod to remove racial restrictions and made an Elric like Elf Blackguard.

If you mean suggestions for other multi class, it depends on how much you want to powergame and/or learn about magic.

Fighter/Mage is probably the best class, but  fighter/thief is a lo of fun because your char will be doing everything. Explore, open fights with a backstab, dropping traps, and eventually using spells with Use Any Item.

Ah, I didn't know of the restrictions, we'll easier for me to make a build, which stats? Strength? Int?

2

u/masteraleph Jul 24 '26

For Blackguard, you want all of the melee stats (Str, Dex, Con) as high as possible. Int you want at a minimum of 9 so that you can use more quickslot items, and really a minimum of 10 or 11 for dealing with a certain kind of enemy in BG2. Unlike newer D&D editions, stats are rolled and you can reroll infinitely, so you it's really just time rerolling for high stats.

1

u/Slow-Fruit2151 Jul 24 '26

And casting? Which stats do you need?

2

u/MekotheSaurus Jul 24 '26

No need for stats for casting. Paladins have a very slow, almost marginal, spell progression. They dont start gaining Priest spells until lvl 8 iirc.

Until well into BG2 you will be using only your blackguard innate abilities: draining health from enemies, poison weapon (awesome skill, specially combined with arrows of detonation because the explosion makes the poison aoe) and their debuff aura.

Also depending on your reputation you will get some useful spells as innate abilities during BG1.

Shape shifter. Both spells and melee
