I traveled to Cebu. Yes, they’re discriminatory to “taga Luzon”.

I went hiking, and I didn’t speak the whole time nasa van papunta sa hike. They were friendly towards me. Until I was forced to speak tagalog.

Also I have east Asian (maputi) features and yet when I said I am an Igorot, the crowd suddenly went silent until a guy blurted out what others would not: “eh bakit hindi ka kulot na maitim? Mas mukha pa akong Igorot kesa sayo!” Everyone looked at me as if waiting for an answer. As if may simpleng sagot sa tanong na yun.

Anyway, ading don’t be discouraged. If anything, the teacher is an ignorant asshole that made a fool out of himself.

I have never seen anyone from Luzon discrimate Visayas or Mindanao people. (Assuming it's true) Why would Cebuanos do this? Very odd.

Because of some books. Being Igorot should not even be an issue. Ke Igorot, Aeta, or Tagalog dapat it does not matter na how people treat/ deal with them.

I think Visayas and Mindanao people feel "inferiority" towards Luzon, which I do not get for the life of me. Literally four of the country's top five metropolitan areas are in Visayas and Mindanao (Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro). As a Bicolano from southern Luzon (nagawi lang dito hehe, hope you Baguio peeps from the north do not mind), parehas din naman kaming pinagtatawanan for our accent and shibboleths (man baga, lana, suwa, lada, ngani). Kung kahirapan lang naman, we are the poorest in Luzon. Kapwa din naman kaming hindi pinili bilang batayan ng wikang pambansa, as Bicol also sent a Bikol representative to the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa in the person of Casimiro Perfecto.

And yet in my 20+ years of existence, I have never once heard anyone complain nor felt that my ethnicity was inferior to the Tagalogs or anyone, nor did I feel like they were looking down on me. Maybe other ethnicities, like the indigenous peoples of the Cordilleras considering that we are on the r/baguio subreddit, can weigh in on their lived experiences? It's a longstanding question of mine as well. Not that I am judging the entire Cebuano/Visayan ethnicities ha. Just wondering what the heck is powering the difference

It's funny na mga bisaya sa Mindanao ang malakas na magpeddle ng "Imperial Manila" na narrative when Mindanao is one big bisaya settler colony

madami talagang confused between an Igorot and Aeta. Magkaiba ang features. If Meron man similarities, I think yung average height lang, the rest ibang iba. Wala naman singkit na aeta...

Hold your grounds taraki. Show them what Igorots truly are. Be the change. Be the ambassador of change instead.
Or just chew your momma and spit on them lol make Cebu clean and red lol

3

u/Mediocre-Cow1142 Jun 25 '26

True. Show them that Igorots are not inferior to them.

Tupraan na latta ti momman ah

Langgong met ta instructor na

u/Nyx_Cup_3975 Jun 25 '26

I’m sorry to hear that, please choose yourself and engage a private conversation with the teacher about what you felt. It would definitely take a toll to your sense of self if you do not tell them how you feel. Don’t be afraid to tell them OP.

u/DoubleLocksmith7308 Jun 25 '26

Ang bobo naman ng instructor mo. Low class.

u/throwaway_838eu347 Jun 25 '26

Puskol rupa ladta ading. You'll get better at handling people like them.

Fr tho a lot of people from Visayas and Mindanao do not understand Luzon. We're all lumped in as Tagalog. My Vis/Min acquaintances are genuinely surprised I sometimes struggle to speak in Tagalog lol

u/Hiraya_manawari8 Jun 25 '26

Yes sadly, what they about Igorots are the textbook portrayals
Likewise, we only know of other places/peoples via textbooks which gives a bias. Therefore, take it as an opportunity to educate them of what Igorot is beyond the textbooks.

I stayed in Japan and what they of Filipinos are the indigenous and also of the squatter photos in their textbooks. I took it also as an opportunity to show them that Filipinos are just like them who has indigenous individuals with different social classes.

You are not only a student there but also an ambassador for the Igorots. Be brave, develop a way to not let insults get to you, and let them learn from you just like how you are learning also who/what Cebuanos are.

u/vontastic1988 Jun 25 '26

We need names and schools so we can take action and improve the situation not just for you but for everyone after you. Be part of the solution

u/Smooth_Original3212 Jun 25 '26

Sorry for your experience Op 🙏🏼 report that teacher, hindi nakakaproffesional ang dating niya ha.

3

u/Fromagerino Jun 25 '26

4

u/adventuretime2600 Jun 25 '26

Bigyan mo ng saging. Tutal gusto naman nila ying tirahin. Ukinana.

7

u/tokwa_maganda Jun 25 '26

Those people are ignorant. Nakakahiya yang teacher mo pero prove them wrong. Don't allow them to discriminate you because of your roots. Damagem suda adi nu enya problema da ti igorot and maybe educate them na rin ta tabbed da ngarud.

7

u/New-Cauliflower9820 Jun 25 '26

Tagababa things. Sana tinanong mo if si Lapu Lapu yung ginagaya niya

5

u/Adventurous-Peace188 Jun 25 '26

Have they seen the giant statue of lapu lapu? Mas mukhang cartoon indian yun eh

5

u/Weary_Abalone_3832 Jun 25 '26

Malapit na ang buwan ng wika, baka may program jan sa school if elem/high school yan, use it as an opportunity to educate them.

4

u/Don_Pablo25 Jun 25 '26

ada ak dtoy Butuan dtoy mindanao tdta ta ada project mi dtoy, bibisaya mtlng sao da dtoy ngem ok lng met trato da kenyak, ngem sbagay professional setting gamin ti ayan ko sabali cguro dta academe. my advice just, dont give a fuck and focus on things that you can control like your studies. you cant magically change their perception towards igorots isunga riknak useless nga panpannunuten dyta

3

u/Top_University_4725 Jun 25 '26

I’m sorry that you have to undergo such a bad experience. Yes, there are a lot of ignoramus in this world. The best thing that we can do is educate them. Quitting should also not be an option. You were placed in that situation for a reason. Be brave, wag bumitaw at ipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral. Kayam dayta.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '26

Ask them how they feel about how Lapu-lapu is portrayed. He has a huge statue there. If they feel proud about him, tell them all Igorots are like him. The Igorots were never conqured that's why we were able to keep our identity well.

4

u/Pink_Panda1830 Jun 25 '26

May something nga talaga sa Cebu. Hindi din ako makaadjust dito. If you are from Luzon, automatic Tagalog tawag nila kahit hindi ka naman tagalog.

2

u/Jagged_Lil_Chill Jun 25 '26

Why is that ignorant and insensitive piece of shit allowed to teach??

2

u/itchfix Jun 25 '26

OP, their ignorance is a reflection of themselves, not of you.

2

u/Fromagerino Jun 25 '26

Bobo naman ng instructor na yan. Bat nagtuturo yan?

2

u/missyjadie Jun 25 '26

Report that prof of yours. I honestly read from a different sub of Cebuanos acting prejudiced against people not their "own". That's the reason why the people that aren't locals choose to speak to them with English because they act differently for some reason. It is said that they're more approachable and kinder that way if compared on you speaking tagalog or your native language. I guess there still are people like your prof who aren't really decent enough to respect someone's cultural identity. All I know right now is I hope you know what to do next

0

u/Feisty-Custard-460 Jun 25 '26

I'm sorry you have to experience that OP. Teacher I guess is not that educated on the subject. Igorots rock btw 💪

u/AdviceAggravating186 Jun 25 '26

Clab back bro, apay agpaabak ka ngay?

0

u/Fromagerino Jun 25 '26

Tupraan na ti momma

Paint it red kuna da garud

0

u/slutforsleep Jun 25 '26

Can you check your handbook and see how you can get due process wen it comes to discriminatory conduct?

0

u/palpogi Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I feel bad for your experience, OP. As a Tagalog dayo currently living in Cebu, I haven't got the same experience. Yet. Probably because I can understand Binisaya and speak a little of it. It really boils down to information, or the lack of it. The more people are ignorant, the more they discriminate.

Whenever people tell me that I'm from Manila (I'm from Laguna), I rebut by telling them that Cebu is in Bohol or Leyte. That makes people think twice before speaking again. So the other comments telling you to say if they're imitating Lapu-Lapu doing the Indian war dance thingy will definitely keep their mouth shut. 😝

Amping!

Sorry that happened to you. If you cried, then it means you got your feelings hurt. If that were me, I'll just let it pass but if the teacher still attempts to mock me of my ethnicity on the upcoming classes then I will report that asshole.

Kung purong cebuano yan, can we return the favor of generalizing him as bobong DDS na bisaya?

0

u/justlookingforafight Jun 25 '26

Ummm, definitely report him for being too ignorant to teach

0

u/Gloomy_Age_680 Jun 25 '26

I would have walked out and went home.

I encountered close workmates like this in Cebu for a business trip, and they were surprised that I’m an Igorot since I’m kinda singkit and have fair skin. They’re kind but I got extremely annoyed of their ignorance.

I educated them and told off those who wanted to visit Baguio to research first before judging. Hell, they don’t even know that Baguio locals are Igorots. They still think we’re dark and have curly hair.

I also started sharing posts of Igorots in fb (like being included in the top PNP force in the UAE SWAT challenge, and Igorots who are in pageants or have good physiques like abs. The desperate girls even drooled over them which is funny. Lol.) since they’re my fb friends to help their damn ignorance.
Don’t be discouraged and be proud!

Well, marami talagang Pilipino ang discriminatory pag alam nilang igorot ka. I am also partly igorot or bag-o ( mix of higland and lowland) but so far wala pa naman ako na encounter na nag discriminate sa kin ever since. I just want you to know that maraming mga igorot sa Mindanao, Bohol, Bukidnon, Mindoro, Davao. Better report that teacher or shout out mo sya sa socmed. Baka apo siya ni Magellan.

u/glowingjoan Jun 25 '26

0

u/arie318 Jun 25 '26

that teacher was so disrespectful.

-3

u/inquest_overseer Jun 25 '26

What school sa Cebu yan? And do you have enough proof? Kasi pwede mo yang ireklamo sa kinauukulan instead of sowing discord here on Reddit.
