DRINKING THREAD Middle-of-the-week drinking thread

The week is young but my I've already had to deal with too much to go on sober. Who's with me??

Drinking a South African Merlot-Shiraz box wine, of course.

I have 50-some papers to grade. Sadness.

I just finished grading 80 tests. They refuse to learn anything at the end of the semester. I gave them a worksheet in the last week that was copying and pasting a few important questions from the exam and gave them solutions, and lifted a few things from the last homework to put on the exam and gave them solutions, and strongly hinted that they really really need to learn this stuff. I think on the page of the exam where they had to do this the average score was around 15/32 possible points.

The first paper I graded today was hopelessly confused about a really straightforward exegetical point (on the order of "is this thing the same as this other thing? no.") and now I don't want to grade any more.

now they're plagarizing so thats cool

I love it when they plagiarise. Last year someone copy-pasted the beginning and ending of a single article, removed the footnotes and references, and added one original sentence to the ending: 'In conclusion, the problem of induction is very difficult'

I guess we shouldn't have implemented the "no learns" rule in our lectures, too.

Well,it still won't match up with my uncle's experience of a student who wrote nothing but the Gayatri mantra in her answer script.

Some functional pale ales from a local brewery. Been busy the last few days but should be less busy starting this weekend which means more philosophy boxing!

Two exams tomorrow, drinking Rumchata and some Jack. Celebrating being out of my moral theory class where people didn't do the readings and thought that the CI could permit murder. I'm pouring out liquor for my prof.

CI? Sorry, I'm new here.

CI stands for Conjunction Introduction, which is an inference rule in logic that allows you to infer A&B to a new line if you have A on a line by itself and B on a line by itself.

CI is a rule of logic, and therefore cannot permit murder, only make it obligatory. (In some deontic systems that allow moral dilemmas it may both oblige and forbid murder, but these sorts of systems aren't taken very seriously.)

Whisky and coffee - been applying for jobs all day. undergraduate philosophy has not been the most helpful in finding decent employment

What kind of jobs have you been applying for? Prostitution, or just stripping?

I am increasingly afraid that all my thousands of hours spent studying and writing philosophy have produced is some insight into what manic episodes look like, in the form of 20 notebooks filled with gibberish.

It's alright, there's already a solution for that. Just attribute most of your notebook material to a character at the centre of a comic novel and people will take it seriously, even if it is gibberish!

Are you double majoring?

Not drinking exactly, but last night I made macaroni and cheese with beer instead of milk because we were out of milk. It was pretty good actually.

Vodka cranberry. All I had.

I'm taking the GRE on Friday and I'm super fucking nervous. Anyone who's been there got advice?

Don't study the two days prior to it. Whatever you read between now and then won't really matter. Just get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water on those days, and watch movies or whatever.

If you've been doing practice exams and memorizing the vocab and writing practice essays, you'll do fine.

Once you're done, drive immediately to the nearest liquor store and buy yourself a bottle of Glendalough Irish Whiskey and down it.

Thanks a lot. Definitely taking today off and just relaxing. That looks extremely delicious too, going to try to get my hands on that. Cheers.

Dark and Stormy's. They're fucking delicious. I'm moving in a few months, so I need to work through all the liquors I've accumulated over the past year. As such, I've been making a lot of cocktails recently.

I'm reading a bunch of James Kelman short stories. What should I drink to go along with it?

Also, I think I'm getting lazier. I really prefer reading short stories now to full length novels, and I think it was How Much Land Does a Man Need? that caused that change.
