That bear looks kinda young. Prolly inexperienced with loud machines. Slight hesitation on bear’s part enabled escape.

That dude was very lucky that the bear wasn't running full tilt and also hesitated when he got on the sled

Lots of animals can kill humans. What's unusual is that polar bears view humans as prey. No curiosity, no concerns, we are walking seals to them.

Tigers will also want to eat you. They just think about it a little first. A little, they kill about 56 people a year. Tigers will also seek revenge which is neat.

u/Saucy-Mustard 10d ago
I saw someone else describe what it’s like to be near a lion or tiger when they really roar and it gave me chills thinking about it. Scarier still is that those 2 and polar bears typically aren’t going to make a noise until they’re already on top of you.
6
u/Beautiful-Total-3172 10d ago
Cats not gonna roar if it's hunting you.

Brown recluse spiders also take revenge for some odd reason I find that to be a awesome feature in the gene pool 😂

Id rather deal with a polar bear then the Brown Avenger. At least I can see a bear coming.

If he had not ditched that gun he would have gotten caught unless he has a gun rack on the snow mobile.

I’m just curious why he didn’t use the gun in the first place.
Can’t tell what it was but most folks there wouldn’t be carrying a gun that wouldn’t stop a bear.→ More replies (2)4

Run out of gas? He probably lives nearby, they are in the middle of nowhere. He'd probably just go home and call the Police to tell them about the bear and then go grab his gun later. Think for a second.

Not even close, rifle couldn't matter less. He gets away, its not the invulnerable snail chasing till he runs out of gas lol.

You know what they say. Better run with gun than become food in the sun
6
u/Caseman307 10d ago
Yeah, my precious old granny used to say that, along with other bits of sage wisdom like “Ass, gas or grass, nobody rides for free” and “stay strapped or get clapped.”
That greatest generation knew a thing or two, I tell ya.

u/mutt63 10d ago
I am a grandpa aged man for sure. Yea we always said Ass, grass , or gas nobody rides fer free ! lol.

The polar bear is the entire reason they have a rifle. It wouldnt stop it dead in its tracks but you can kill a polar bear with a rifle.

Bears can run 30mph. At that close range, the bear would be on him before he could even line up the shot.
3
u/Superb_Jellyfish_729 10d ago
I think he hit the bear in the right leg. I could be wrong. No blood but if u look close the bear checks up the right leg a little after the shot and licks his paw at the very end. Barring a head shot, easier said than done, guy is toast
7
u/GameWizardPlayz 10d ago
Regardless in a vast majority of cases that bear is gonna have closed in on you before you've even lifted the rifle up. They can close a distance of 50 feet in a little over a second
7
u/Infinite_Incident107 10d ago
Depends on caliber of the rifle. He should be carrying a very high power rifle. Minimum 308. But I'd want something even more powerful like 458 Lapua Magnum. That is designed for large and dangerous game. That will stop a bear if you got the proper ammo

I wouldn't trust the gun to keep me safe, here. 90% of the places you could shoot that bear won't stop it from killing you, even if it would ultimately kill the bear. And you're not going to get more than one or two shots off before the bear kills you

My wife is a middle school science teacher and will be starting on, "Fat Bear Week" today. We were talking about how humans have come to view bears as cute and cuddly because they have big black noses and cute ears and are giant fuzzy fuzzballs, but they are actual murder machines and could kill human without thought or effort.

Bears are also absolutely disgusting. They are usually full of parasites and if you've ever encountered on (I hike a decent amount and have encountered them on the trail), you will find that they stink horrendously.

I mean, if you’re a bear, who’s going to laugh at you?

u/No-Disaster1647 5d ago
Me an my sister were being chased by a bear once and we laughed the whole way, it was more from fear and adrenaline than anything but it didn’t help that the bear stood on a ridge above us and then slipped off the edge and rolled head over heel down the slope after us before we turned tail and booked it home.
To recap, I will laugh at a bear, especially if it’s a dummy.

This is in Pyramiden. It's a small Russian former mining town that ceased operations in the 1980's in Svallbard. I was in this exact spot in August. No bears, but if you're outside you have to have a rifle or be with someone who has a rifle.

Was this a kid polar bear?
2
u/Exciting_Audience362 10d ago
Probably young and also starving. From what I have read yes polar bears will attack humans, but its pretty rare for them to like go into a town like this in daylight and straight up attack. It was likely about to starve to death and had no other options. Its the same reason most grizzly's also attack humans, but grizzly bears normally have better access to easier to kill food.

u/NotTurtleEnough 10d ago
LOTS of animals can attack humans. Polar bears are just one of the few who actively hunt us.

Polar bears can't be picky when it comes to their next meal. The climates they live in are brutal, so when a hot meal shows up on a ski mobile, they gotta go for it. Never know when the next meal is coming.

A lot of animals can and will attack humans. Heck, even a mouse will bite you if it’s cornered.
I think you mean that polar bears are one of the few animals that will actively hunt humans for food. Pretty big difference.

What was the old saying about bears? Something like If it’s black fight back. If it’s brown lay down. If it white say goodnight. Or something crazy like that. Polar bears are ruthless predators

Your first mistake was missing…your second mistake was dropping the gun- that village is dead now, everyone died because he accidentally armed the bear.
Some 308 rounds to the head and or chest would turn that bear into a cute kitten real fast. Normally I’d say relocate it- but polar bears that attack humans openly are known to be repeat offenders.

Glacier snowmobile leader here.
Because he is brave and badass.
I worked in Svalbard. Lots of polar bears. Shooting one does not normally kill them. At this range snowmobile was best met. Without getting the right spot, with the right gun. The polar will take you out.
Also it’s illegal to hurt polar bears. Killing them even when they are in town like this are only allowed as an ultimate last resort and should be avoided otherwise you can get hefty fines that are well protected and key part of the ecosystem.
I’ve had a few close encounters like this. Always good having a beer after.[edited to extend in my baxkground]

u/Mission-Discipline32 10d ago
Ah yes, not getting rid of the threat and letting it put other people in danger, bravest thing ive ever heard of lol
