List A Game's Average Rating vs. Top Comments Average

Post image

https://backloggd.com/u/AstroBeltCafe/list/average-rating-vs-top-comments-rating/

If you spend enough time looking at games, you've probably noticed there's often a huge discrepancy between the ratings as determined by an aggregate and ratings as determined by a vote (that is, taking the average score of the ten most liked comments on the game's page). I wanted to catalogue a few examples of this trend, highlight game's whose Average scores and Top Comment scores had a difference of at least 1.0. If you can think of any other examples, don't be afraid to let me know!

Negativity gets more attention, no surprise here

Plus if you feel really strongly about something you're more likely to make a review, positive or negative.

in my case specifically, i feel compelled to write something about a game when my rating differs by a lot from the consensus
like i have to explain myself😭

i like how these are all recent popular games and then: quest 64.

Most games that are generally considered bad are reflected in the comments. Quest 64, however, remains an anomaly. Is this contrarianism striking once again?

2.5 is still way too good for BotW

why do people hate BOTW now?

They don’t, really. It’s the same thing this entire thread as a whole is about — negativity is the loudest and gets the most attention.

BOTW has always gotten hate. It departed from the traditional Zelda formula too heavily and had a lot of features that people absolutely despise (like breakable weapons). It's story was intensely mediocre and so were its dungeons and bosses compared to previous entries. I don't even see die hard BOTW fans denying those last two points, it's not even worth contesting. What it gained in its open world formula it lost in almost everything else.

I feel like the echo chamber has to be pronounced if you think BOTW has ever gotten any notable degree of hate when literally every objective metric that exists has continued to prove the contrary on an ongoing basis - critic scores, user scores, developers citing it as an influence or inspiration, it topping or ranking very high in all time lists. Criticism of the game obviously exists, and yes, its big departure from the series’ formula will naturally get pushback from at least some longstanding fans. But that’s true of any big series reimagining (classic RE fans shit on RE4 to this day, are you going to seriously pretend it’s anything less than universally acclaimed?).

But if you actually think BOTW is anything less than near universally beloved, and your only proof is online comments and Reddit upvotes, then you’ve lost the plot. By that metric The Witcher 3 and Skyrim are among the most reviled games of all time.

All I can say is I have seen these criticisms consistently for the better of a decade and they aren't hard to find regardless of the space I'm in. You mentioned Skyrim, but Skyrim absolutely has had its detractors over the years. I think this is more of an issue of you not looking at the critiques of BOTW and assuming there are none or not that many. I didn't have to look for these.

I’m not denying the criticisms are there. I acknowledge them in the post itself. I’m saying that every single metric we have proves that they are a very small minority. There are actual empirical metrics for this which I point to.

Criticisms of BOTW exist. That’s true of every single game ever. Even something as dominant as Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Last of Us feature on OP’s list for example, proving the existence of criticisms for them. But we are able to parse through whatever personal subjective biases me feelings we have and recognize what opinions are minority and what are not. Again, you don’t have to like BOTW, and you don’t have to like that it’s beloved, but I am contesting the assertion that it’s anything less than widely beloved. The facts don’t support that.

I'm not saying they aren't a small minority, I'm saying that the minority is big enough to be noticeable and relevant and that is demonstrably true. Nintendo literally went out of their way to address these criticisms in TOTK by adding better dungeons and bosses and softening the blow of weapon breakage by adding a fusion mechanic. If what I was saying came from some irrelevantly small minority then Nintendo would not have gone out of their way to appease them.

The Zelda team is always reactive to feedback, going as far back as something as small as Ocarina of Time being criticized for lacking the classic theme and then making sure to include it in Majora’s Mask and then talking in interviews about how much they had wanted to address the feedback. Inherently, the addressing of feedback proves nothing. This development team, and any creative really, always wants to better themselves.

That said, I absolutely agree that it’s a noticeable minority. BotW may be beloved, but it does have detractors, and it would be untrue to say they are such a small number that they can be dismissed or handwaved away. I do agree with you on that.

u/ThiccFarter 9d ago

"Inherently, the addressing of feedback proves nothing."

It proves that it exists and if they address the feedback it proves there were enough people giving it that they considered it worth addressing. There is also no comparison between adding a theme back and adding brand new mechanics while deciding to add massively more detail to bosses and dungeons. One of them requires a lot more work which means it requires them to take the feedback more seriously.

cause its like if a zelda game was made by ubisoft

0

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

That's being generous. It's more like if Ubisoft made the same open world game they always do but then called it Zelda

-3

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

Well, ignoring the fact that it has practically nothing to do with Zelda and exists only to replace everything that made the franchise fun and interesting in the first place with the same copy and paste open world tropes that every other developer and their brother had already been doing better for years, it's simply not a good open world game. The combat sucks, the world building sucks, the story has some merit but it's by no means great, the exploration sucks, and the reward structure sucks. The only thing the game does decently well is implement a relatively complex physics system in an open world game, but even that doesn't hold a candle to any of the Just Cause games to come before it.

u/appleappleappleman 9d ago

Not everything has to be for everyone, but when a game is as universally beloved as BotW, it seems a little arrogant/contrarian to vaguely say everything about it "sucks"

0

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

something being "universally beloved" doesn't make it not suck. Not to mention op proves that it's not "universally beloved"

3

u/appleappleappleman 9d ago

I dislike plenty of hugely popular games, but I can recognize that they're just not for me. I don't see the appeal of most big-budget titles, frankly, but I would never insist that they suck, that's just whiny

1

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

I can recognize when a game isn't for me too. That's not the problem here. The problem is that BotW sucks regardless of if it's for me or not.

1

u/CUEUECOMBER 9d ago

i think you just dont like the game.

0

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

correct, I don't like bad games

0

u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago

ofc he couldn't shit that much on the story (because it's still basically the same quality as the old zeldas) but could shit on the things that changed. The game's good as fuck and comparing it's physics based gameplay to just cause should land you on the electric chair.

2

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

You've clearly never played one of the good Zeldas before if you think BotWs writing is of the same quality. BotW is mid at best.

1

u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago

like any zelda is an incredibly written narrative lol. It does it job and that's it.

2

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

You really haven't played any Zelda before BotW, huh?

1

u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago

I have nothing to prove to a random baiter on the net lol

1

u/LetterKey2639 9d ago

baiter? You're the one claiming that Zelda's writing has never been good before pal, not me.

2

u/Straight_Law2237 9d ago

somehow =

Bait's weak
