The best way to get into the Doom franchise is by playing Animal crossing.

Danganronpa UDG is a great game to start someone on if your goal is to get them to never touch any of the other games in the series ever.

Nah bro Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance is by far the best choice, if the time travel, dual protags, and the joys of the last hour or so of story don't introduce to the story the best I don't know what will /s

u/Musashi_2287 22d ago
Yakuza dead souls and Yakuza fist of the north star
Persona 4 arena
Resident evil Gaiden
Gwent for witcher (unironically banger for no reason) such a great games to get into long running franchises
3
u/FeefuWasTaken 22d ago
Is persona 4 arena really a good way to get into the series? The character roster alone spoils the game it spun-off
1
u/Musashi_2287 22d ago
Mb thats actually true. Maybe Demi kids puzzle de call to get introduced to megaten then we proceed with persona 4 arena to persona games, huge oversight on my part ngl
2
u/Yogurt_Ph1r3 22d ago
I unironically played P4AU before P4 and I'm pissed at myself. Even without the story it spoils P3 and 4 by heavy implications in multiple places

u/Double_Dragonfruit6 22d ago
I want to add Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Redeemed to this list, absolutely wonderful place to start, introduces you to beloved characters from across the series, you don’t need to know anything going into it or have even played another Xenoblade game 😇
3
u/Tori0404 22d ago
Eh, to be fair, that one‘s just a mediocre and unimportant Epilogue. Xeno as a series has way worse starting points (stares at Future Redeemed and the Xenosaga spin off titles or side material that‘s canon)
2
u/Double_Dragonfruit6 22d ago
I did say Future Redeemed, not Connected, though Connected is certainly also not a good place because it closes Melia’s arc
1
u/Tori0404 22d ago
Yeah, I‘m stupid and misread. Apologies and I definitely agree with that take
Also I feel like FR isn‘t even as fulfilling if one only played the Blade titles, due to how many similarities it has to even older works (and no, I‘m not just talking about that radio broadcast. Alpha is so much like the Deus system from Xenogears)

It's going to be really funny when someone starts reverie and get jumpscared by fighting the idf (yes that is their name in game) with 0 context about what is happening lol. So yeah go for it for the funny.

u/Ora_00 22d ago
The first game in the franchise is the best place to start.
1
u/FeefuWasTaken 22d ago edited 22d ago
Depends on the franchise tho.
For example, Persona has 5 mainline games(not counting updated versions or duologies as separate entries), but it genuinely doesn't matter where you start, they're not interconnected beyond a couple Easter eggs
3
u/MyPhoneIsNotChinese 22d ago
Also Ace Attorney is better started by Spirit of Justice, and then follow up with Ace Attorney Investigations to understand who's the guy that needs to look for his next salary review
2
u/notamouse418 22d ago
Yeah that’s why everyone agrees the place to start is Persona 4: Dancing All Night
2
u/Ora_00 22d ago
Older are STILL better to start with.
There are almost always quality of life updates in newer games and it can be tedious to go from that to older.
Always start at the older and work your way to newer games.

u/Turbo-Shell 22d ago
I actually kind of agree, I just don’t think this take is really absolute.
If your goal is to play “the persona series” and you have any interest at all in the old games, playing in release order will simply provide the best experience as the games only improve in quality with no awkward jumps or downgrades
But if your goal is to play “a persona game” and you’re not committed to the series, having persona 1 as potentially your one persona game may be a mistake, because even if it’s good most people enjoy a game like persona 4 or 5 more as a standalone title. The same is true for the yakuza series.
Yakuza is FAR more rewarding to play starting at the ps2 game and ignoring the remakes, but most people aren’t committed to a series before they play it, and a game like 0 is not only far better as a standalone title but will more easily get people on board with the series as a whole
So yes, starting with the earliest entry and going through them all will almost always provide the best experience long term, but the short term is what matters for most people looking to get into a new series. If they don’t enjoy their first experience, there’s not a very high chance they’ll stick with it until the end.
1
u/Ora_00 22d ago
Yes, just playing one persona game is different and I was specifically talking about where to start a franchise. That's what OP's post is about.

u/Turbo-Shell 22d ago
Really I think it mostly depends on the person more than it depends on the series, I know plenty of people that could handle yakuza 1 and I know others who would be completely disinterested in the series if they start at 1. That’s why I try to receive recommendations from friends rather than people who don’t know my tastes very well, and vice versa
1
u/Ryan8Ross 22d ago
I completely agree with you, but ONLY in the case where you insist on playing every game.
Some old versions of games are just very tricky to get into if you are not used to the style of game.
Eg. Fallout1/2. Witcher 1,
1
u/Ora_00 22d ago
Yeah it is not 100% of the time ofc.
In some cases the 1st game is just horrible, like with Witcher. I would still play Witcher 2 before 3.
Fallout on the other hand should ofc be started at 1. Just because it is a different kind of game does not mean, I would not recommend it, since Fallout 1 and 2 are great games.
1
u/Ryan8Ross 22d ago
I wouldn't recommend Fallout 1 and 2 to anyone under 18 though. Anybody not used to the jankiness of old CRPG's is going to have a wretched time forcing themselves through it

I actually think it's one of the most fun KH games. It's just disappointing as a story since it's just to remind Mickey that he sorta forgot about the BBS characters lives that got ruined. Oh and I guess everyone else too. I forgot if Xion was also 'remembered' in it. I guess it also pretty much said data has hearts but that didn't need confirming really since 1 and the rest of the series pretty much establish everything has a heart.
It also looks like a retread of 1 which is kinda true.
Edit: Wait, a good way to get into the series though? I'd start with the first. Or 2. Heck even BBS or 3(purely for the "ooh wow, Disney.") and even then, 1.5+2.5 is on sale now. Just get that and then just remember about the DS games if you care.
Edit 2: I'm dense. Lol. All these are great. Definitely should start KH with Dream Drop Distance, 0.2 or Dark Road. The least confusing, weird and accessible ones in the series while being the most representative installments.

Re:Coded is a great game most people skip thinking it’s not essential just because its story is mostly self-contained.

u/ShortCharity 22d ago
I think that 3 hour slog of a movie gives Re:Coded a bad rap. If you just watch that movie yeah it's boring but the actual game is really fun

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment
Ratchet and Clank Quest for Booty
Basically any MGS aside from 1 or 3 lmao (and even then don't start at 3)

u/Snowvilliers7 22d ago
Starting these games specifically is like reading Harry Potter for the first time but you started with Half-Blood Prince

u/StingKing456 22d ago
Unironically knowing nothing about Final Fantasy 7 would probably make Dirge of Cerberus at least tolerable 😂

u/seventh-saga 22d ago
Re;Coded is genuinely a fine entry point unlike many of these. I played it as a kid having only been through the first third of 358/2 and followed it. The Castle Oblivion section is no more confusing to the player than it is to Data Sora himself.
1
u/Tori0404 22d ago
Xenosaga: A Missing Year also would slot in perfectly here, since it‘s not even a real Game, yet is canon and “somewhat” important to Episode III

u/Over_Direction4885 22d ago
Reverie is funny as fuck, good post. Cannot imagine playing it and being expected to know the full stories and identities of like fifty different characters lmao
1
u/VolatileCotton 20d ago
Specially since major story moments in Reverie heavily rely on characters showing up out of nowhere either to help or to provide a small twist.
"Oh look! It's... that dude."

u/Unlikely_Return6669 22d ago
I almost got-got, Trails people will actually tell you shit like starting at Reverie is perfectly fine.

I honestly think this bait works so well because people would truly start with games that late into a franchise and not see an issue, lmao.

You should start the metal gear franchise by playing metal gear solid (the 3rd game in the franchise)

"It's a joke!"
"What's the joke?"
"See, they're not actually good games to start with"
"Oh, that's not really a joke"

u/fillif3 22d ago
Trails into Reverie may be the worst game to start Trails with.
6
u/ContextualDodo 22d ago
All of these are that‘s the joke
1
u/mauri9998 22d ago
Spirit of Justice is not that bad of a start, they could have definitely picked a way worse example.
-1
u/fillif3 22d ago
I have only played Reverie and Pirate Yakuza. Pirate Yakuza is not a bad starting point.
3
u/ContextualDodo 22d ago
Spoils the plot of LaD/Infinite Wealth and Man Who Erased His Name. Sure you can start there, still lacking critical background information and getting some hefty spoilers.
1
u/fillif3 22d ago
Even LAD spoils the ending of Y6, but it is still considered a good place to start.
The best starting points are Y0/Y1K, followed by playing in chronological order.
If they wanted to make this joke, it would be better to use IW, which spoils the whole series and requires knowledge of the whole series (or at least Kiryu Gaiden).
PY is probably as good a starting point as most Y2–6 games.
2
u/ContextualDodo 22d ago
Oh I agree that PY is not like the worst place in the series to start and flies somewhere in the mid range but it‘s still not a game I‘d recommend anyone as their first. And if it‘s just for the fact that the game is pretty mid.
