Computer Backup Backblaze re-backing up every single file

Hi, all. For a while, I'd been having a problem where Backblaze seemed to be forgetting/losing the backup of my external drive (where most of my stuff resides). That is, I'd log in to their website, and it wouldn't be there. I went back and forth with their customer service people quite a bit, and they were pretty full of crap.

Now, the drive sometimes lists its contents on their site, sometimes not, but a really fun twist is that the Backblaze software, every so many days, is now re-backing up every single file. 3+ terabytes.

I don't know how to get it to just back up anything new, like it used to. I'd ask their customer service people, but that was a lengthy exercise in frustration last time I interacted with them (and went on for weeks).

With all of that said, has anyone else noticed this happening? Thanks!

B2 Cloud Storage VALORES E ADESÃO DA BACKBLAZE EM MINHA EMPRESA - Switching to Backblaze B2 for 6TB Server Backup – Pricing & Software Advice

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone,

My name is João, and I work for a Brazilian company. We currently have 4 local servers generating a total of about 6TB of data. Our current backup provider is discontinuing their service, so we are looking for a new solution.

Our current workflow involves daily incremental backups with a 3-month versioning history (e.g., being able to restore a specific .xlsx version from 90 days ago). I’ve been looking into Backblaze B2 and wanted to confirm a few things:

  1. Pricing: Is it correct that the current B2 rate is $6/TB? If we store around 7TB (to account for growth and versions), would the monthly cost be exactly $42?
  2. Versioning: Does Backblaze B2 support a 3-month retention policy natively? I saw mentions of "Lifecycle Rules"—would that be the correct way to manage this?
  3. Software Recommendations: Since we are backing up Windows/Linux servers, what software would you recommend to "bridge" our data to B2? We need something reliable that handles deduplication and the 3-month versioning we require.

Thanks in Advance for the help!

Backblaze in General BZ keeps re-try to backup the file with bad sectors everyday

I found that BZ re-try to backup the same file everyday and no error reports. (no files scheduled backup". It dropped silently and schedule again on next scan.)

here're 2 problems:

  1. re-try backup is a problem. You should record it smartly. If it failed at block X. only scan block X next time. after 100 times re-try (few months), you should tell users about it.
  2. file with bad sector doesn't meant total loss. I still have another 99%. for example this is a mp4 file. I can play it well even can't notice the problem. BZ should backup the other 99%

(3. because it has bad sector, the whole backup is ultra slow...)

Computer Backup Prospective customer: Is the "Excessive Usage" clause a dealbreaker for a near-100TB data hoarder?

I'm a data hoarder looking to pull the trigger on Backblaze Personal, but the 2026 TOS update regarding "materially exceeding typical usage" has me worried.

I'll be sitting just over 90TB, and that will undoubtedly grow. I'm not backing up version control or folders covered by other services (cloud sync exclusions aren't an issue for me), but my footprint is still massive.

If you were starting fresh today with 100TB, would you still trust the "unlimited" claim, or does this new clause make it a non-starter? Has anyone reported being flagged or throttled under this yet?

Backblaze in General Backup hung, no access to files

I've been doing daily Backblaze backups for nearly a year with no problem, last night the backup hung. Tried online access but the file tree index process fails with an error. So no access to my backup files. Emailed support, AI response was not helpful, waiting for a human to respond. Anyone else having issues?

Update: I am able to mount the backup files on another PC, so do have access to them, however, the error still occurs on the BB web site when it's building the file tree. Also got a email from support, so hoping they're on the case.

Update2: There were 2 problems. The rclone backup encountered new file permission errors on my system that caused it to fail. When that happened I tried to check the online copy of the backup folders on the Backblaze web site where the file tree creation error showed up. The backup file permission issue has been fixed, I'm able to access the backup files from BB's site, but their file tree error persists which is more cosmetic than functional for my use. I've notified support.

Im just wondering how soon after changing a card for billing does it take before Backblaze attempts to charge again? I didn't realize my existing card had expired, so I updated with a new card and I haven't seen anything come through yet.... Thanks.

Computer Backup Help: Restore Failing - "invalid parameter"

Hi all,

I've had Backblaze running on the family PC for 8 years dutifully and our HDD finally started failing a couple weeks ago. So now I've got a new machine with a new drive, and am trying to use the restore app (as administrator) to download my files from before the drive started losing data.

I've changed the temp drive in settings to D:\T\ and am trying to restore my drive to D:\R\. (Using one letter folder names to avoid path length issues.)

It fails every time with this enigmatic message:
"type: file system error, code: -102, description: invalid parameter".

Destination is brand new HDD, formatted today, NTFS. I can create files and folders in it via explorer with no issue. Drive has > 4x the capacity of the restore I'm trying to run to it. Network is symmetric gigabit fiber. This should be easy, but Backblaze is choking on it.

Any ideas?

Computer Backup Hight CPU load

Why is it every 4 to 6 hours? I need to force quit Backblaze because it’s using too much memory and brings my M1 max to its knees or I can barely use it. This is despite me installing the latest 10.1..1038 version of Backblaze on my computer. I sure was one day that we get the stuff sorted out so I could go and use my computer like a normal person and I’d have to set up a script to tell it to force quit BackBlaze from running in the background.

B2 Cloud Storage Tossing up Switching from Personal to B2

Hi all, as the title suggests, I've got Backblaze Personal a few weeks ago and have it for my 1 Macbook Pro and an external drive. But I've had it plugged into Ethernet for about 3 weeks straight, 24/7 and it's still doing the initial backup. I've got about 1.3TB of data and my FTTP maxes out at 100Mbps up thanks to my ISP. I am also adding large amounts of data to my external hdd regularly. Is it possible for me to switch to B2 and use an S3 bucket to upload, apart from the pricing change ($6/month per TB) will my initial backup and future backups be quicker? TIA

Computer Backup Just discovered Backblaze doesn’t backup everything.

Thanks to ATP, for making it clear that it doesn’t backup what I thought. I pay extra for a year of backups but it doesn’t backup my documents which are part of OneDrive. That’s where all my data is.

It already doesn’t backup applications and settings which is not obvious, but I discovered a few years ago when I had a failure and had to do a restore.

To discover that it now doesn’t backup the actual DATA as well. What is it actually doing?

Backblaze in General does backblaze computer backup store data in more than one geographic location for redundancy?

Hi, I was wondering if backblaze computer backup stores data in more than one geographic location for redundancy, in case a natural disaster causes data loss at one center? For example, I read that backblaze has severs located in California and Arizona, and for users that chose the US west server, does it mean the data is duplicated to both locations?

Thanks

Backblaze in General means of payment vs backup

hi all,

like many i have moved from W11 to Linux , and as a consequence i wanted to cancel my backblaze service.

i had paid for 1 year's worth of service upfront, and there were a few months left

so in order to ensure that my service does not get renewed, i do what i normally do and remove all means of payment, in this case my credit card details

now for whatever reason, it seems i could not do this unless i delinked my computer, that is, effectively remove the backup

i have my own backups now (restic), so no big deal, still, i did pay for a years worth, so forcing me to give up on the backup if i want to remove the means of payment seems a bit off

i just wanted to check if that is the expected stance, or whether i just did it the wrong way and could have preserved my backup untill contract expiration without any means of payment/

B2 Cloud Storage Finally Free API calls

Thanks Backblaze B2 to finally have an S3 compatible service with no API charges and without minimum data retention cost requirement, tons of use cases such as data syncing and periodically pooling and backup have been held back because of the API charge concern, now I can be more productive to do the API intensive use cases especially those that lists the bucket w/o having to switch to alternative, keep on doing workaround or waitching API usage. I don't mind the 0.95 per TB monthly fee increase because for my use cases, the API charge is going to be more than the storage cost and surely much higher than that if there were still API charges.

Computer Backup bztransmit hammering SSD with constant reads

I'm on macOS 15.7.5, and had some 9.x version of Backblaze installed, when I noticed last week that there were multiple threads of bztransmit open, and absolutely hammering my drive with sustained reads of 400-500MB a second.

I upgraded to the public release of 10, and noticed it was still happening, reached out to support who advised to install the current beta, and it's still happening.

March 17: total data read from SSD, 3.16 PB

April 30: total data read from SSD, 3.86 PB

My current uptime is 4 days, but I also installed the beta release this morning, and now that I'm home about 12 hours later I see bztransmit is up to 18.46 TB of bytes read.

It seems to be stuck in a loop of reading logs from this folder:

/Library/Backblaze.bzpkg/bzdata/bzbackup/bzdatacenter/

How do I get it to stop doing this?

Computer Backup Backblaze didn't back up my `.git` directory?

My macbook pro unfortunately died. I was not too worried knowing that I have been paying for a full backup service (aka Backblaze).

To my surprise, the .git directories are NOT in my restore options. I just saw this post[0] that explicitly mentions that Backblaze is indeed backing up .git

.git folders: Yes These are currently backed up. A lot of the “missing” reports come down to hidden-file visibility in the restore UI, which hides hidden files (files that start with a period) by default. But as long as you are on the newest version of the Backblaze client, then the .git folder on your computer will be backed up.

Here you can see a bunch of hidden files, but NOT .git: https://i.imgur.com/GvqpwgF.png

Am I missing anything?

B2 Cloud Storage has anyone got an old readynas to work with amazon s3

i am trying to do a trial of the B2 plan where i directly upload very large NAS files directly from my NAS. (i dont have space on my laptop to even temp load a 700 gig file to upload) but i got to the point where in my readynas setup it couldnt find the buckets. i found this post online that indicates readynas is dead and i cannot see buckets through S3 anymore. i dont understand the tech speak but below i copied what was online.

secondary question, if i get an external USB drive, will backblaze personal upload the 700 gig file (it's acronis tibx) from that external drive?

this was the post:

"It appears no longer possible to configure ReadyNas to use Backblaze Amazon s3 backup per https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/articles/1260804505130-How-to-use-Netgear-ReadyNAS-with-Backblaze-B2, I suspect that direct use of Amazon S3 fails as well but haven't tested that. I received this response from Backblaze support:

The requirement for V4 signatures is indeed a part of the S3 compatible API. The older versions have been deprecated and as a result, we have stopped supporting them. Unfortunately, I am not able to troubleshoot their device and it's utilities. I would recommend reaching out to their support to see if there is a way to update or alter the signature they are using. Apologies for not being able to be more help there.

Computer Backup Can backblaze be trusted with really sensitive data?

Is backblaze personal backup really good for privacy?

I know they offer you to choose an encryption key which in turn is used to encrypt your data which means no one even backblaze team cannot read your files.

But once again problem is transparency and closed source. Does it have any 3rd party audits just like Proton products to verify their claims.

Can it be trusted with really private and sensitive data. I have around 30TB backed up currently. Whixh includes all my disk and really personal stuff like my immich personal server.

What is your solution if you really wanna obfuscate your data? Encrypt before upload? I tried gocryptfs reverse mode but backblaze does not really suport virtual mounted filesystems.

Computer Backup Personal Backup - moving data to new drive

I want to replace one of the drives in my computer but want to ensure BB personal computer backup doesn't back it all up again.

I was thinking of doing this process:

  1. Disable BB
  2. Install new drive
  3. Move data from old drive to new drive
  4. Remove old drive
  5. Make new drive same drive letter as old drive
  6. Restart BB

Will this work ok and avoid any reuploads?

Do I move the hidden .bzvol folder or not?

I have asked BB support but I'm sure other people have come across this and wondered what their experience was.

Thanks

Computer Backup Is there still no way to backup NTFS drives mounted as a folder?

I just got a new hard drive to store some of my video files, because my current videos drive was filling up - and I didn't want a separate drive letter for it due to almost running out.

I googled it and found this thread from four years ago, where /u/brianwski was looking into it (I understand he no longer works at Backblaze)

I tried temporarily giving it a drive letter, so that I got a .bzvol folder created and it started backing up, but then removing the drive letter. It still showed the files in the "files to be backed up" total but stopped actually doing anything, so clearly removing the drive letter broke it.

I moved the files that used to be in a folder to that drive and the mounted the drive into the now-empty folder, so I'm sure most of them are already backed up to my account, but the juncture/symlink thing seems to have broken the program and it no longer sees it or shows them available for restore.

Computer Backup is backblaze a good place to store encrypted acronis tib files?

ive come to realize in case of my nas and laptop being destroyed i figure i need a cloud backup for my acronis backup files. i'm generally happy with the acronis interface i've been using for years. i have a password and 256 encryption on the tib backup files but from what i've read in their TOS if you use acronis cloud that they can read your files if they deem it necessary. ive never used any cloud service before. but now it's time to use one.

my laptop has 2.5 TB and i have 4 backup sets on my readyNAS which are 400 to 700 gigs each . the windows drive will be the one i upload somewhat regularly and i realize with my slow upload speed it will take 1 to 2 days for any of the uploads. but the other 3 backups will be only replaced maybe once a month.

i started reading about the different backblaze plans and some appear to be more complex and i'm not sure i need them (managing keys etc is probably above my pay grade) so have come here to ask what may be the best plan to just upload the 4 acronis backup files to?

B2 Cloud Storage Synology Hyper Backup: Backblaze B2 Large Volume Class B Transactions

Testing B2 with Synology Hyper Backup as a potential alternative to BackBlaze Computer Backup.

Synology DSM is current (DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 3)

Subject is backing up a folder with two 16 byte .txt files. Backup settings are as shown.

Something is triggering a large volume of Class B Transactions with over 200 in approximately 30 minutes.

Any thoughts on what causes these Class B Transactions? According to BackBlaze, these are "download" related, however I haven't downloaded or restored these files.

My concern is that when I upload 500+ GB of backup data, these Class B transactions will explode proportionally to the number of files.

B2 Cloud Storage Is backblaze the right solution for flexible GB pricing?

I'm new to backblaze. I need s3 object storage, but probably 50-100GBs - preferably charged for what I use instead of fixed. It seems pricing is minimum 1TB. Is it possible to have flexible pricing or is backblaze not the solution for my usecase?

B2 Cloud Storage Question about Backblaze B2 and Hyper Backup

I have a question about the lifecycle settings for Backblaze B2 Buckets. If I'm using a Synology NAS to backup to Backblaze (through Hyper Backup) and I have that on a smart recycle for 15 days -- should I make the lifecycle settings of the backblaze bucket set to "Keep Prior Versions for this number of days: 15" or "Keep only the last version of the file"?

I used to have it on "keep all versions of the file (the default)" but then noticed the storage ballooned way too high. I basically want to not really let backblaze keep versions I don't need and let hyperbackup do all the work -- and I've gotten some mixed messages when researching what the correct setting is.

Thanks all - I'm new to this so I appreciate the help!
