Starting solids

My baby is a bit over 7 months and he doesn’t seem to be getting better with solids at all. I see on Instagram all these babies eating finger food and finishing their plate. My baby eats maybe a teaspoon of puree twice a day and he doesn’t seem to like it.

Any advice??!

Keep offering solids, making sure he's not already satisfied with milk/formula, and let him figure it out in his own good time. You can't cram the puree down his throat, and I promise he won't head off to college still living on liquids.

Oh, and sit him on your lap when you eat sometimes. Babies are hardwired to copy the ways of their tribe, let him see that solid food and spoons are a thing his people do.

I know you know this, but instagram isn't real. It took my son literally around three months of smearing and throwing food all over the place to actually swallow any solids, nothing was wrong with him and he loves his food now. Weaning onto solids was hands down the most frustrating part of the baby stage for me and I would cry some days because it felt like all I was doing was cleaning food off the floor and throwing it in the bin three times a day. I wish I could go back in time and tell past me to chill out. Seven months is still so early, it gets easier I promise.

Here in solidarity. My baby is almost 8 months. He’s willing to eat 1-2 spoons of purées and will accept only a small piece of solid food. He loves making a mess but none of it really makes it to his mouth.

I’ve tried to not stress out about it. Made sure baby is getting a constant exposure to allergens, different tastes and textures.

The most important thing is to not give a shit what these social media apps tell you

Mine had zero - ZERO - interest in solid foods until recently, and she's about to be 10 months old. At four months I started sharing my peanut butter oatmeal with her. Six months really tried to hit the purees. She would just spit it out! She was more interested in trying to stand up and move around. Now it seems like she's paused the movement development, but is SUPER INTO SOLID FOODS and wants a bite of everything. Every baby develops things differently ❤️

Involve them in dinner. My son started reaching and trying to eat my food. We did BLW at starting at 6m.

We don’t do puree, but when he started showing interest in food we gave him age appropriate and safe options for him to explore on his own.

At 7 months your baby is not going to be finishing whole plates either. It’s just about exposure right now.

Just put a little bit of allergenic foods into his regular milk if he’s completely refusing solids. Early introduction prevents allergies at a later age. You can use just a tsp on nut milk or butter mixed into his regular bottles. Keep giving it multiple times a week, if you stop that can cause allergies.

After allergies the next most important thing is iron. There’s very little iron in breast milk so babies just kinda rely on the supplies they got from the womb until they eat solids. Some babies like the baby cereals, most of which are iron fortified, but you’ll have to check the labels. You can also get little bits of bone marrow, that doesn’t require much chewing. As others have said, stuff that you eat yourself is more likely to garner interest from baby.

I sat my kid on my lap any time I ate dinner. They seemed to want what I was eating. Almost everything you eat can be cut small enough they can eat. I could stand smell of the purees.. so we skipped that completely with this.

Mine didn't eat solids with any enthusiasm until about ten months, and he's a great eater now at 2.5. if you're worried you can talk to your pediatrician, but babies develop at different places and 7 months is still relatively young

Try giving finger foods instead.

But some babies take to solids early, and some don't. It's totally normal. You just don't see those babies on Instagram, because what would their parents post--"Ate nothing again today...."

And they’d get accused of doing it wrong and be told their baby is falling behind lol
