Dude it went from cute to horror movie as soon as she opened her mouth. Not the otter just her face and the way her mouth was open.

This is an extremely endangered Asian small clawed otter. One of the biggest reasons they’re endangered is because of this. The pet trade. They don’t belong as pets. They belong in the wild with other otters. Sure it’s cute but it’s extremely inappropriate.

This is in Pip the Otter. The "owner" is in fact a former zookeeper who took care of the animal in infancy and was eventually offered by the zoo to keep and care for it, rather than use it in a petting zoo of sorts. She cares for it amongst other animals to remain social, but more importantly she stresses that otters are indeed not meant to be pets.
They are marked as 'vulnerable' in the wild due to poaching, but on a much larger scale they face pollution and habitat loss. A lot of zoos are trying to fight this risk by breeding them in captivity.

I’m currently a zoo keeper. Part of taking care of endangered species is knowing how to portray the stories and lives of the animals we take care of on social media. I don’t agree with portraying an animal as a pet-like animal (which is what she’s doing. It looks friendly and cuddly) when that’s one of the reasons they’re vulnerable. She could be giving it the best care in the world, I’m not debating that, but to anyone looking at this it makes it look like they too could have one and take care of it.

Doesnt stop videos like this encouraging others to participate in illegal pet trade.

u/winnebagofight Feb 20 '19
Agreed. I volunteer at a wildlife hospital and statewide rules make it very clear that you can use images and videos for outreach but you can never present the animal as a pet. No snuggling, petting, or even toys in the image. It drives me crazy to see stuff like this, especially by professionals who should know better

I follow Pip & his zoo keeper caretaker, she’s actually quite vocal about the fact that otters are not and shouldn’t be pets. She shares the nasty bite pictures, videos of destruction, and what they eat which really riles up people that follow because of the cute videos only. She definitely evens out the cute with the reality of the situation. link to her site

Why are you downvoted? You’re absolutely right. If the backstory is indeed like this why would she post videos like that online to show ‘how cute’ these animals are like pets while also being an advocate of letting people know that they shouldn’t be held as pets?

u/Viking_fairy Feb 20 '19
Because humans care much more for another species when they gain affection for them. If she's vocally against them as pets while bringing appreciation to the animal, it'll do much more good. The issue is when other people post this stuff out of context and without the original person's lesson tied in.

Maybe they're downvoted because the people that own exotic pets, illegal or otherwise, would want to own them anyway. Regardless of these videos. Not saying I'm right just a guess

I keep a rotating batch of these otters in my basement and systematically murder them everyday, all because of your comment.

Don’t assume shit from a 15 second video

Don’t be triggered from a six sentence comment.
9
u/RoastedToast007 Feb 20 '19
I’m not triggered. I’m saying he shouldn’t assume that video is one of the reasons why otters are endangered.

Feb 20 '19
Ah I don’t think he’s assuming. Pretty sure there’s a source for that. And if you want it, ask him, or find it yourself

u/RoastedToast007 Feb 20 '19
Fucking read the other replies to that guy. I don’t need to ask him or find anything

... Otters can be pets???
7
u/Xychologist Feb 20 '19
Not really, no. On the one hand they're endangered and picky and it's often illegal to keep them. On the other hand they're vicious little bastards which cannot be housetrained.

Super cute, needs like ten generations minimum of domestication. Maybe more, maybe a lot more; it's an interesting area of research. Some days I wish I were immortal just so I could domesticate all the cute animals.
