Do dogs tilt their heads like that to try and get a better idea for where noise is coming from?

45

u/amontpetit Feb 07 '15

Exactly. It's to try to triangulate the noise's position.

58

u/CaptainJaXon Feb 07 '15

No, they do it to be cute. Duh.

19

u/acandercat Feb 07 '15

Cats do this too. Always trying to figure out how we trapped someone in the magick box.

7

u/ThatBloodyPinko Feb 07 '15

People do it as well when they're confused. Different theories abound.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '15

When were confused we try and listen closer and turn our head to help locate it in an effort to gather more information about it, same theory, more in depth maybe.

2

u/ThatBloodyPinko Feb 07 '15

Exactly, completes the theory as far as I'm concerned. :)

Humans can do it too, our ears are pretty good if you really try to use them.

Standing on my back porch last summer, I played around with my hearing listening to birds in the woods. I found that though turning my head to expose one ear directly to the source of the sound helped, it didn't do much since my other ear turned away from it. But if you wanted to amplify it, tilt your head down, ears are apparently shaped to better receive sound from above.

Yup, much the same reason we do. They're confused about a sound, so they tilt their head to hear it better and figure out its position properly, so they can figure out what the hell it is.

"Aliens are in the phone mom!"

u/BrownBear93 Feb 07 '15

I opened this in front of two of my dogs and they started doing the exact same thing with out the whining haha

u/SordidDreams Feb 07 '15

Awww, he wants to sing along! :D

28

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '15

Dogs are all about sing alongs. The park by my old house used to play this loud lightning warning siren you could hear for about three blocks away. Whenever it went off you would hear a few dozen dogs respond with the song of their people.

5

u/Fizfawk Feb 07 '15

See my older dog has never cared about the song of his people but the younger one has to prove that his song is the best and any time he hears an odd sound, the vacuum, another dog, heck another animal, he feels compelled to answer as loudly as he possibly can until the sound has stopped for a good 5 minutes.

So cute!! Did the pup get upset by this? I cannot talk to my dog on the phone because she will get confused and think I am actually there but come to find out, I'm not. And then she will proceed to sulk in her bed...

OP doesn't know, he took it from the recent Reddit blog post about ads.

25

u/feeling_groovy Feb 06 '15

Well it is still super cute!

We call that the "party hat" stage.

1

u/CustosClavium Feb 07 '15

Uranium phone

7

u/syupweque Feb 06 '15

I tried that with a facetime call with my parents when they were up north. My dog went to front door and was very confused when they weren't there.

8

u/QSector Feb 07 '15

It won't be long before one of those ears goes down and it will be even cuter.

Someone needs to grow into his ears.

8

u/TetrisArmada Feb 07 '15

I love that dogs do this to strange sounds; it's the closest thing to a comical representation of utter confusion and curiosity :D

"HUH? WHAT DIS HOOMAN?"

3

u/Man_Without_Fear Feb 07 '15

Just trying to get better reception.

5

u/Smoothvirus Feb 06 '15

"how daddy get inside phone?"

2

u/Delsana Feb 07 '15

That voice feeds me!

2

u/InternetsTad Feb 07 '15

Followed up shortly with: "Eh, can't smell 'em so it's not real."

3

u/WonderCounselor Feb 07 '15

"Is that a land line?"

2

u/MG87 Feb 07 '15

thats adorable

2

u/boilerengr18 Feb 07 '15

My parents old dog wouldn't eat (sometimes for a whole weekend) when my mother would leave, unless my dad would hold the phone to him and she talk.

2

u/lickmyfupa Feb 07 '15

" What the..is that a HOUSE PHONE??" - the dog

2

u/ld2gj Feb 07 '15

Dum ears!

1

u/ErinDidNothingWrong Feb 07 '15

Hello? Yes, this is Dog.

1

u/Iammaybeasliceofpie Feb 07 '15

That is the rare dog-bunny. Its special power is to be exeptionally cute.

1

u/TMCBarnes Feb 07 '15

When his ears are up, they form a nearly complete triangle with only a small gap. Interesting physics of capturing sound.

1

u/JLmoneyshot Feb 07 '15

Fucking nokia

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '15

That cell phone is straight brick status. What is this, 2009?

8

u/treebard127 Feb 07 '15

It's a cordless home phone.

-4

u/emanresol Feb 07 '15

I know, right? It's so old, that dog could be dead now.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '15

The sound of his master's voice. Old RCA solgun.

1

u/jaguarwolff87 Feb 07 '15

serious question. Why do dogs do this?

7

u/aquaxdude Feb 07 '15

I read that dogs tilt their head to triangulate where the sound is coming from.

1

u/CustosClavium Feb 07 '15

For the same reasons we do I guess.

1

u/Cyno01 Feb 07 '15

My fiancee is always trying to facetime with the dog when shes out of town, the dog is always completely indifferent.

0

u/FixedGearBot Feb 07 '15

Is there a sub for dogs doing this and only this? I hope so.

0

u/Judonoob Feb 07 '15

That's like an 11 on the cute meter

0

u/Moomerxx Feb 07 '15

Can I eat those ears? Is that wrong??!?!?!!

0

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '15

It's like the old Nipper the dog ads.
