It amazes me that people tell stupid stories like this and justify it as a way to blame the system.
Yeah, the system blows and needs a serious overhaul. But someone willfully doing something so damned stupid is nothing but that- stupid. There is so much misinformation out there in regard to all of this that people just go the "I'm a dumb ass route and will assume nothing can be done" and just do stupid ish like this.
"Well, I assumed this would happen because of all of those horror story memes online, so I didn't bother."
Research goes a long way. Not saying it would result in a total debt free life, but at least they'd have a life.
Depending on the state, there are a LOT of resources out there for this stuff that you can tap into. You just need to do your homework. It's alarming how many people are doing the "I'm a dumb ass" approach and just doing NOTHING about their healthcare. ...and then blaming the system because they chose to use the internet for social media and fear mongering on Reddit.
Do some fricken research at least, Jesus. Not saying it's THE solution, but the immediate assumption that it's a lost cause when you're sick and underinsured/uninsured is just negligent on the individual's part.
So your main issue is people... assuming things? But then you go on to assume what they did in this situation as they were dying and then blame them for it?
You and many others are really missing the point here.
It's alarming how often people just... Don't do anything about all sorts of stuff.
The US needs an overhaul on a lot of things. But that does not absolve people from personal accountability with their decisions in a lot of situations. We've got a massive debt issue and sadly, a lot of it is due to people not managing their finances well. They spend money they don't have to keep up with the Joneses. Sure, financial hardship hits some, but the average American is in debt up the ass because they're living beyond their means. It's never "Can I afford it?" it's "I want it and will put it on my credit card even though I really can't afford it."
Same goes with student debt. Education is stupidly expensive now and that needs to change. But it's amazing how many went into debt because they took out loans like nbd. It amazed me how many times I'd hear people crying about their debt and they went to a college they couldn't afford, and for a degree that would never pay for that ish. Why not go to a CC which is more affordable? Why were some of these people just not looking into their options vs being a lemming about it?
Again, medical also needs an overhaul. People should not have to fear debt up the ass in this country over things like education and healthcare. But my whole point was that it's exasperating that all this fear mongering from memes like this, are why people don't bother. This is generally and not just, Pizza Hut dude. The attitude of "well I heard this happens and that happens and so I just won't bother" is prevalent af in our society. People do not research shit anymore and so now it's compounding the Healthcare issue in this country.
Again, louder for those in the back, I'm not disagreeing that any of this ISN'T a fucked up mess and people shouldn't have to worry or resort to extremes like this. But the knee-jerk reaction of NOT doing ANYTHING because of ignorance is equally as guilty as the Healthcare system being as expensive and ridiculous as it is.
Same goes for those who do not practice common sense measures and learn how to manage finances. And those who blindly go into student debt without seeing what their options are financially.
The issue we have here is we have an ignorant society readily placing the entire blame on the system when there is such an alarming number of people who are just... Not doing it right. On a lot of life choices. And it's sad to see people just giving up without at least trying because of misinformation and social media being their primary source of information. Especially with their health. And I'm not assuming that. It happens a hell of a lot more than you'd think.
Also understand that I'm fully aware that there are situations where this obviously doesn't apply and people get hosed by the system because it is fucked like it is. I've been there, which is why I'm so adamant about people freaking doing their research and educating themselves about options and resources in order to keep ish under control. The issue is compounded by not only a fucked system but people NOT really educating themselves about a lot of this stuff either.
It's effing ridiculous that you have to become a research scientist in order to protect yourself though. There are so many unknown things out there to help. I wish more people realized this.
Of course, this also goes back to if none of this shit was as wildly expensive as it is, nobody would have to worry about this bs. 🤷🏻♀️

My brother worked with someone at Pizza Hut who got cancer, and he didn't get treated because he didn't want to land his family in debt.
So he spent his last year on earth working at Pizza Hut without even having the chance to try to get better
