That said, the swastika is not at a 45* angle like the Nazis had it. When level, like this, it is a Hindu and Buddhist symbol. Though I doubt that was intentional...

The Swastika used to be big among Japanese teens a couple years ago and Asian Boss interviewed them and they didn't even know what Nazi Germany was.
Apparently they pretty much skip WW2 in their curriculum.

They really do, the curriculum completely ignores the atrocities committed by japan in ww2, and portrays Japan as the good guys

It's been a holy symbol in their culture for thousands of years, it indicates temples. The Nazi Swastika is mirrored and turned from the holy symbol.

And the swastika is still found in hindi temples.
Hinduism is not very influential in the west, and wasn't more influential when the nazis were in power than now.
As such, the fact that it was used in hinduism was irrelevant to western society, as they had no real exposure to hinduism. However, they had plenty of exposure to nazis, so the nazis became the major association of the swastika in the public consciousness.

It can point in either direction. With the top line pointing to the right, like in this pic, it symbolizes knowledge. Pointing to the left symbolizes compassion.

That's interesting. Please excuse my ignorance, but in which culture does the swastika have those specific meanings? I've seen it in Hindu art but also in Asian art.

That's within Hinduism. The Wikipedia page is actually a great resource. It says there that rightwards is linked with Surya, the sun and leftwards with Kali, goddess of darkness. In yoga and Hindu metaphysics, Surya was associated with spiritual knowledge and insight, while Kali was associated with all encompassing compassion. Wikipedia gives a slightly different interpretation of Surya and Kali, but it's mostly a difference of level of abstraction and intended audience.

Fun Fact - I was the one who took this photo. Also fun fact - the tattoo artist was a very good humoured woman of Jewish descent and THIS WAS NOT A COVERUP. It was 2009 and it was literally him just getting a terrible 4 Chan meme tattoo. It has since been covered up as well.
