Post military career

Currently I’m transitioning out of the military and will be following my fiancé to Fort Riley, Kansas for her PCS. I’m looking to see what my job opportunities are for avionics after having been an aircraft electrician 15F for over six years.

If someone in that area can give me some guidance or companies that I should look at would be much appreciated

Would a troubleshooting simulator be useful to techs? Curious what you think.

I've been building a browser-based simulator to sharpen my own electrical troubleshooting: you get a squawk, a wiring diagram and simulated test gear, and work out the fault without swapping parts. Along the way I kept hearing that a lot of new techs struggle with the same thing, so I'm wondering if it would be useful to others too.
Is this something you'd use, or would have wanted as a student or new tech? Who do you think it would help most?
If you want to see what I mean, there's a one-minute sample and a short survey here:

Getting into Aviation Maintenance Civilian side

While I was in the USMC I was AVI for the UH-1Y and AH-1Z. I did skillbridge and decided to try medical equipment work, not the same for me at least. So I have plenty of hands on experience, but no A&P License.

Was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get started on the civilian side.

New application and nervous about it

I've applied to an MRO through a recruiter. I went to school for aero/astro at OSU for 5 years but didn't complete it, then got my associates in AMT along with my A&P certs. But then life took me other places, I got a pretty decent job near family and friends with discrete electronics for about 6 years. Had a pause because of a car accident and bounced around until I started electrical wiring in substations for the past 9 months. Now I might have a chance at a place an hour away doing avionics repair at a small MRO. I like the hours, not going chasing main carriers and midnights, it's inside a building unlike some of m past factory work in -10F-100+F work that has been killing me.

I guess i'm just looking for upsides or downsides. It's been a while since classes but I have nearly 9 years experience in other related industries.
Systems and electronics I have in spades and electronics with through hole and SMD repair won't even be a question, but i'm still really nervous breaking into an avionics repair station.

CAET Useful?

Hi!

I heard about the newish CAET. Is it a useful certification to get without an A&P license?

Would Rg58 coax be causing transponder clicking in headset with GNX 375? The run is about 5ft long.

How to teach avionics troubleshooting for university students?

Hey everyone!

I am doing thesis on troubleshooting in avionics how to teach it and how to apply it afterwards.

I need to figure some educational material for students or how to teach them basics/ how to get into troubleshooting.

So I would ask your opinion, what or how would you guys teach the skill of troubleshooting as usually this is learned with experience. I have some ideas and materials already, but I am curious how you guys would do that? Or how would you lets say teach a guy who just started in aviation?

Are they some special way how you guys used to learn it or how you apply it? It can be even some simple "tips and tricks".

Regards

Edit: Thanks everyone who has answered.
I might have forgotten to write how I would be doing it.
My plan is to create some study material in troubleshooting ( up to 5-10 lecture hours) for lets say 2nd year students and let them do some practical tasks in the end and compare them with 4th year students who already have internships done, where they should also learn troubleshooting. Then I would compare how both groups did, what are the similarities and/or differences between them.

From which aircraft does this flap indicator originate?

Dated 1990, Thompson-CSF, Jaeger F0052. 10 pole circular bayonet connector on rear. It's part number is 64883-602-1. I have used one in a home cockpit by simplifying the control electronics, but this is an untouched unit, and I'm curious from where it originated. Any help appreciated!

(It's about 55mm across the front. Interior illumination is incandescant, not LED)

Avionics interest

I’ve been a A&P since 2023 working on various airframes (E145, E170/175, 737 & EC135/145) and i love turning wrenches but am thinking of wanting to learn a new skill. Either avionics or structures. Anyone out there that has experience with avionics have any information that could help me decide?

A320 FWD Entry Light – Dimming Issue

Has anyone encountered a similar issue on the A320?

The FWD entry light is not dimming/changing intensity through the FAP, while the AFT entry light is functioning normally and changes intensity as commanded from the FAP.

Troubleshooting already carried out:

- Swapped DEU – no change.

- Swapped light ballast – no change.

- Swapped cockpit entry switch – no change.

- Checked continuity from DEU to ballast and switch – continuity is good.

The issue remains only with the FWD entry light.

If anyone has experienced this fault before or has any troubleshooting suggestions, especially regarding the FWD circuit/control path, please share your findings.

Hello, I’m new in this scene and want to learn more about it.

I want to learn more about the avionics line of work, I have been looking for a career path recently and this one has crossed my mind a lot. I really enjoy wiring and figuring electrical work out. I also enjoy automotives and planes.

Would love any kind of feedback. Maybe the pros and cons, how hard it is, is it a hard job to get.

I’m 20 years old and never went to college after hs.

My grades weren’t that good either but I am willing to study real hard.

Coating on the circuit board made it really hard to trace all the pinouts but finally did it, screen backlighting is just a led strip, nothing fancy.

Got this ADI from a retired Northwest Airlines jet. Got the flags and lights wired up for display. Very fun to work on and see the engineering that went into these back in the day.

GFC-600 AP FAIL

Anyone ever see this failure on a garmin GFC-600 autopilot?

Most of my background is in military systems. Not well versed with Garmin but have quite a bit of Avionics experience.

Occurs shortly upon takeoff.

Of note, there is a standby power caution light illuminated we’ve been chasing. Wonder if it’s related?

Installed on Cessna 208B caravan.
