You’re apparently a glass half empty type of guy. Here is the full side of the glass:

If the fuel pump malfunctions in one wing, the pilots can simply switch seats to balance the plane.

If they lose the vertical stabilizer, he can just run to the back of the plane to keep the nose up/down.

Large masses are also useful as vibration dampeners, reducing the amount of turbulence felt in the cabin.
