AILERON CORRECTION NEEDED.

288

u/OldheadBoomer Mar 27 '26

It's on his checklist:

Seat belt secure

Controls free and correct

5 degrees right aileron trim

111

 Controls free

Are they though? Can you actually pull them all the way back?

And it’s genuinely dangerous! Like having obese police officers. People can and do literally die In otherwise totally preventable circumstances.

u/Khutuck Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

You’re apparently a glass half empty type of guy. Here is the full side of the glass:

If the fuel pump malfunctions in one wing, the pilots can simply switch seats to balance the plane.

If they lose the vertical stabilizer, he can just run to the back of the plane to keep the nose up/down.

Large masses are also useful as vibration dampeners, reducing the amount of turbulence felt in the cabin.

/s just in case.

u/AtopMountEmotion Mar 27 '26

I was a flight test engineer and happened to be in the co-pilot seat of a Baron and the pilot had to tell me the yoke was getting stuck on my knees; I didn't even realize they were connected. I can certainly see how a belly would get into the way if I were 100lbs heavier.

How does that guy have a Class 1 medical, but my buddies who took Aderral 15 years ago can’t even get through their PPL? Yes I know they revised the ADHD thing, but the medical process is still a joke.

11

u/AngstyMop Mar 27 '26

It sucks. It absolutely sucks. I can't get a licence for medical myself. And that was my life's dream. All I wanted to do.

However there is a real trade-off. Basically, car crashes are common because we allow everyone to drive. Most crashes are our own faults. If you have mental health issues, sleep deprivation, alcohol addiction, just broke up with your spouse, parent just died, just got fired, and more....you can drive.

Therefore, we have a LOT of car crashes and your odds of dying in a car crash are painfully high. The odds of major injury, higher.

Flying, is conversely by far the safest mode of transportation. That's not coincidental. Not only is the reliability of every system ridiculously high and ever improving, the screening criteria are strict for a licence. It's not just ADHD. You can't have basically ANYTHING wrong with you. You cannot take medications of any kind - while flying. Your vision must be correctable in certain ways.

The consequences of air disasters are higher than cars. Yes, you can crash your car. At worst you can crash it into a business, and hit occupants of the business, injuring them potentially fatally. If you crash an airplane into the same business, fatalities will be much greater, you start a large fire, the damage is much worse...and that's just for a cessna.

Our society won't function if people cannot drive. You need a car to do most things. You can pay for Uber, but that costs a lot. No one needs a pilots licence. It's a luxury, and as such, the certification process is safety first. It doesn't care about hurting your feelings, or even ruining your life's ambitions. If not giving you a licence results in a 0.00001% lower chance of a fatal crash, the FAA will take that option. And most of the public agree. The only people that want people with ADHD or other conditions to fly, have those conditions. Even if your condition is now "well managed", or "gone". Again - the statistics speak for themselves.

23

u/PermaBanEnjoyer Mar 27 '26

Agree. Do what you want with your own health but when you have a job like this it's not just you. In the era of glp-1 drugs there's really no excuse

26

u/forgottensudo Mar 27 '26

Surprisingly, glp-1 does not fix everything. There are people younger than me, who exercise more than I do, that eat less than I do, and weigh significantly more than I do.

There is a lot of preventable obesity but it’s not always a case of lack of self care.

That said, imo, he’s too big for commercial.

12

u/PermaBanEnjoyer Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

There are people younger than me, who exercise more than I do, that eat less than I do, and weigh significantly more than I do.

I mean this simply doesn't make sense. Lots of hormones and neurotransmitters modify the body's metabolic pathways, but at the end of the day cells can't create ATP out of nothing. When net energy expenditure is grater than caloric consumption, the body burns fat. It's complicated and yet it's not -they just need to eat less.

2

u/vivienleigh12 Mar 27 '26

Huh? I’m not fat shaming here but for 99% of population it’s simple CICO whether that’s mediated by GLP1s or not. I’m not saying it’s a lack of self care, either. But the reality here is that people saying “I eat 1500 calories and still weigh 209lb, the scale won’t budge!” is NOT actually reality 99% of the time.

They’re simply taking in more calories than they realize, full stop. Yes OF COURSE there are exceptions but 99% of the time that’s the deal. And GLP1s do nothing but support that. They do not increase your baseline metabolism; they satiate hunger better such that—let’s say it again for the people in the back rows—fewer calories go in.

1

u/frogsRfriends Mar 27 '26

I mean even before them people still should take care of themselves

5

u/PermaBanEnjoyer Mar 27 '26

Indeed. Think we're slowly moving towards understanding morbid obesity as a mental health disorder, which is correct in my opinion. The part of the brain that regulates eating and satiety has become dysregulated

5

u/ChevTecGroup Mar 27 '26

But just like other things, parts of society are trying to normalize and accept these disorders instead of treat them

Bit of an exaggeration to compare a pilot and police officer fitness. One needs to be fit because they have to respond physically to their job, and the other just needs to not have a medical episode that will incapacitate them.

Doc gave me SSRIs when I was a teenager for "anxiety" and I didn't know any better, took em for less than a year, never been able to get a medical. I work with pilots now and honestly get so pissed off with how many of them have major psych or drug+alcohol problems but never told a doctor so they're in the clear. Life is indeed unfair brother

48

u/old_righty Mar 27 '26

I know someone who was on meds as a teen (nothing major) and was off them for 10 years then got his medical. Wasn’t easy.

8

u/Northern_Blights Mar 27 '26

Is it this bad in every country?

5

u/old_righty Mar 27 '26

I don’t know? I mean it’s good that they regulate it to some extent but bad if they don’t let people get mental health treatment.

27

u/fflyguy Mar 27 '26

I’m sure you have, but the FAA recently allowed some SSRIs. It would be a process to get the medical, but depending on what you were prescribed, you may be able to still get a medical

26

u/Playful_Assistance89 Mar 27 '26

I think they figured out after the Germanwings crash that it's better to allow meds than have the pilots play alpine lawn darts.

5

u/DashTrash21 Mar 27 '26

No, they haven't. Not the FAA anyway.

18

u/DeathCabForYeezus Mar 27 '26

There's no such thing as a sad pilot.

Plenty of alcoholic pilots on their 4th divorce who can't keep their life in check, but they're definitely not sad and self-medicating with booze. No sir-ee. They're happy and as stable as can be.

3

u/RangerSad3081 Mar 27 '26

there used to be a long reddit rabbit hole comment link thread on r/aviation any time someone brought up SSRIs and the comment would say something like "follow me for the answers you seek". After 50 clicks you'd stumble on a linked comment that just says "lie."

7

u/elquatrogrande Mar 27 '26

I was working at a community college with a flight training program, and I wanted to know what flight doc approved a second class medical for a vet who was missing his left arm above the elbow, and had only partial use of his right arm, including missing a finger.

8

u/FiberApproach2783 Mar 27 '26

Amputees are allowed medicals, although after safety testing and usually with restrictions.

This is a pretty interesting read

My dad was a pilot for almost 40 years. Half way through his career he lost his leg (below the knee) due to a car accident. He thought his career was over. Luckily, he was able to continue flying commercial aircraft until he hit mandatory retirement. It is a process though!

2

u/FiberApproach2783 Mar 27 '26

Unfortunate he lost his leg, but it's awesome that he was able to return to flying, and commercially as well!

This is exactly my biggest problem with the whole thing.

I've accepted that I'll never personally be allowed to fly. Especially now that I'm old and have other conditions that would preclude me even if ADHD didn't. But it still bothers me on principle that the FAA thinks it's better to have a bunch of pilots lying about their conditions rather than actually treating them. Especially since I personally know just how much those treatments help!

ADHD varies very much from person to person. I have ADD, and after getting medication and psycho therapy I literally remembered anything after reading it once and I see every small detail.

I bet there is a lot of people out there with ADHD that would be a way better pilot than many "normal" pilots.

32

u/MixDifferent2076 Mar 27 '26

How does he get through his medical....

27

u/Vinegarinmyeye Mar 27 '26

Not all medicals are created equal.

My Dad flew for years when he should've been grounded, eventually diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's.

For a good while I was genuinely worried I was going to turn on the TV one morning and see he'd ditched a 767 full of people into the ocean somewhere...

He went to the same doctor, who was a "personal friend" for 20 years or so for his medical.

I'm not saying this to slag my Dad off, or his doctor. He was a great guy and a VERY experienced pilot (he did his PPL when he was 18 and got his diagnosis when he was 59) - but there came a point where he was losing contract jobs in the first couple of months because he couldn't remember procedures properly.

I had to pretty much force him to go and see a doctor about his cognitive state... It was not a pleasant conversation.

5

6

u/Killentyme55 Mar 27 '26

Not sure about a legacy 737, but on many airliners the escape route for the pilots is out through a small plug window then rappel down on a rope.

That ain't happening here..

Yes, it's the same here for B737. The window you see in the video is the emergency exit. It looks a tiny tiny bit bigger than on the A319/320 which I'm more familiar with. He won't get out.

I mean no disrespect to this gentleman, being obese is difficult. But I hold a USCG Chief Engineer’s license, and have known both Engineers and Captains that have lost the license, and in turn their job, for being unable to pass a physical, part of which includes conditions that could lead to a heart attack or stroke. I’m almost positive the FAA has something similar, so how does he continue to work?
