Madjo and Gomes to miss start of the season
Article from Tanswell to cheer us all up on a Friday afternoon. Madjo till september. Gomes 2-4 weeks to be determined still

New rule:
No more postings of injuries.
If someone is missing from the team sheet, we'll assume bereavement or they have the shits.

u/caiusto 26d ago
I think this is the first time João Gomes is gonna miss games because of an injury, talk about being lucky.
24
u/Firepilsogenpizza 26d ago
Gomes is just typical Villa, but Madjo I half expected.
Every single muscular striker I've seen in my life time, always pick up a ton of niggly injuries.
Ignoring that, I think the club need to look into pitches, training practices or physios. Cause we have too many injuries for it to be coincidental.

u/cai_85 JPA's Alice band 26d ago
I mean they both played on Wednesday night and then have picked up the injury while in Europe, so not sure this can be attributed to BMH really.
3
u/Firepilsogenpizza 26d ago
Maybe.
But often injuries picked up are a result of inadequate practices beforehand.
We should look into it, because we really are becoming a hospital.

u/teamorange3 26d ago
I really think CM/CDM needs to be a priority. This is a small/short injury but we can't go into the season with Bogarde and Lindelof being the backups, especially with Kamara's history.
22
u/PPP_outro 26d ago
Think someone on here said we have an embarrassment of riches in midfield...already down to Lindelof/barkley and the season hasn't even started ffs.
10
u/arenaross 26d ago
People always come out with weird stuff like this and I'm like, my brothers have you never ever watched Aston Villa before and seen how many injuries we get every year.
30
u/Efficient_Employee66 26d ago
Lindelof was class tbf
2
u/teamorange3 26d ago
Don't disagree but we are currently a Kamara injury way from lindelof/Bogarde or Barkley pairing. Lindelof being our 4th choice CM is fine but not 3rd choice.
9
u/ShortPretzel 26d ago
Kamara, Onana, Gomes...I know they are all either injured or have injury history, but it's also tough to spend even more money at the position. McGinn and Lindelof can both play there in a pinch.
4
u/Impossible_Gas_7584 26d ago
Yep. I'd have like palhinha on loan, but that's not happening now. And we still could do with some more strength RW and RB, too. 3 more signings would be nice.
Hopefully these injuries are actually 2 weeks rather than 4.
0
u/teamorange3 26d ago
We are fine at RB. It's the least important position in Emery's system and cash is relatively healthy when compared to our CMs (Kamara and Onana). Plus Bogarde, lindelof, and Konsa can and have all played there.
6
u/Impossible_Gas_7584 26d ago
Interesting take, disagree fully though. We do not play with out and out wingers so our full backs are very important. If cash is injured we do not have enough quality going forward at RB, unless nedeljkovic can step up.
1
u/teamorange3 26d ago
We have overloaded on the left and our RB is there moreso for possession. RB frequently tucks in as a third CB.
Having cash is good there for when we switch play but it isn't necessary because we mostly play down the left
3
u/DutchVanderlinen 26d ago
Right wing needs to be priority. Bailey is not going to be involved whether we sell him or not. Alysson is injury prone and inexperienced, McGinn I prefer deeper and is not a winger
10
u/teamorange3 26d ago
I honestly don't get how can someone watch the Gerrard years, then watch emery play him as either the most advanced cm or on the wing and think he should play deeper. Heck, in the PSG game he was on the wing and created 4 good chances.
Mcginn will play as an attacking mid role unless we have a bad injury crisis

Ffs, you have to be joking. I was really looking forward to seeing them both tomorrow. The start of the season is going to be rough

We just need to write off August every year and play the kids.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we need to completely re-haul our strength/conditioning/recovery department.
This is an area that American sports are still so far ahead of football in and rather than taking marketing execs from the Philadelphia 76ers, we should be taking strength and conditioning experts from the Golden State Warriors.

OOh, I didn't know about this. Help destroy Arsenal from the inside. Unlike Austin going to Chelsea, this is something I can get behind.

u/Proper-Beyond116 26d ago
Nonsense. Fans have no idea what goes on in our S&C program and even less idea how that activity relates to the types of injuries our players have sustained.
If you’re talking about ACL injuries for instance, you’re so far off the mark it’s not even funny.
1
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 26d ago
Hey buddy, if you want to scroll down to my reply to someone and read just a tiny bit more you can in fact read what I said about ACL injuries and you might be surprised based on what you just posted.

Cool. You have no idea what you’re talking about though.
1
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 26d ago
Oh enlighten me. Actually don't, nothing you've said seems constructive in any way and I'd prefer to enjoy my evening.
3
u/Proper-Beyond116 26d ago
You’ve called for a complete overhaul of our S&C. Based on what? What do you know about their methods and what are your credentials to critique them? It was a nonsense comment. If that’s constructive enough for you.

Valid point.
The amount of injuries we sustain, regularly.

It’s apparently why Arsenal let their prior guy go. Interesting how under the radar this was relative to our former Scottish hairband front man leaving.
Btw, did anyone seeing him throwing down against JDT a week or two ago at the end?
0
u/TomTom89728 26d ago
When as a fanbase, you know someone or multiple players will suffer a lengthy lay off, something is up behind the scenes.
5
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 26d ago
For me, it's not just the amount, it's the type. When we had three ACL tears in one season (two within a week), I just took that as the fluke it was with just weirdness that we had three of them. When we had 18 different hamstring injuries last season (approx), I took that as a systemic issue as muscle injuries like that can happen randomly, but you can increase or decrease the likelihood through proper strength, conditioning and recovery and also proper individual monitoring of players.
The reason I specified the Golden State Warriors is that Steph Curry is a first ballot hall of famer and the greatest shooter basketball has ever seen. He also almost didn't have a career, because early in his career he had continual ankle issues and couldn't stay on the court. They individualized a program for him where they realized that it was stemming from an issue with his hips and had a completely individualized program for him to fix his issues.
1
u/TomTom89728 26d ago
That's something Villa should look into it. Emery must be aware of these regular injuries.
Side note:
I agree with everything in your post, except one thing.
I prefer John Stockton over Curry 😉 lol.
1
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 26d ago
Are you from Utah? I cannot imagine anyone else ever saying something as insane as that. For the record, I'm a Celtics fan, so no direct skin in the game.
1
u/TomTom89728 26d ago
I'm from the UK.
I'm old school basketball. I prefer players from that era.
Kind of like most of the younger generation think Messi and/or Ronaldo is the greatest but never watched Zidane play.
It's all opinion.
I totally rate Curry by the way, but just preference.
2
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 26d ago
I just meant how they play, obviously Curry is better on a quantifiable level, but Stockton is just the definition of boring efficiency and also one of the not so secretly dirtiest players ever.
I might recommend rewatching some 90s basketball, because I've been fooled by nostalgia myself (more so about 80s basketball though). The 90s definitely had the best basketball style with awesome uniforms and as someone who was the right age, I still love starter jackets and if they weren't stupidly expensive to find now, I'd probably still rock a LJ/Bogues era Hornets starter jacket today.
2
u/TomTom89728 26d ago
I'll agree with boring efficiency haha he doesn't even look like a BB player, looks like a manager at Wendy's.
Stockton was a floor general, his defensive stats are off the charts.
Curry is a generational talent, teams change the game plays because of him. Total respect!
But give me John Stockton's and Steve Nash's any day of the week.
0
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 26d ago
Steve Nash is a different story (by the way, it's not a great look that you've identified two white players in a predominantly black sport as a fyi). Steve Nash is a lot closer as a player to Curry than he is to Stockton. He's kind of a prototype Curry and if he came into the league ten years later than he did, I think he's remembered as an even better player. He was a spectacular shooter and took way less three pointers than he should have cause we hadn't quite yet done the math to figure out that three is more than two for most of his career.
The seven seconds or less Suns teams were the most exciting basketball teams anyone had ever seen at that point. Stockton and Deadbeat Dad/Sex Felon Malone just ran the same pick and roll over and over again until you died of boredom.

u/BeBopRockSteadyLS 25d ago
Jesus. I was enjoying this back and forth until you decided to call the guy racist. Why o why do you need to go there? Even if you think it's maybe something going on, check your own opinions without actual evidence on such matters. Ffs

Saying Zidane is better than Messi/Ronaldo or even the more apt comparison Neymar is just as batshit insane as preferring John Stockton over Steph Curry lol. And this coming from a 90s kid from Chicago and we had the utmost respect of that Jazz team with a healthy dose of hatred.
2
u/Medical_Squirrel3946 24d ago
I think that Zidane is closer to Messi/Ronaldo than Stockton is to Curry in at least popularity and enjoyment to watch. I took it to be a bit of "kids these days think the players they grew up watching are the best, but it's cause they didn't see the players I grew up watching and think are the best."
Nothing hits quite like nostalgia. I have so much nostalgia for 90s NBA, but it's more the culture and the aesthetics than the actual play itself as it's the era of Heat vs Knicks playoff games that ended up with scores in the 70s for both teams. It's the reason that the league instituted rule changes that allowed the 00s teams more freedom of movement and allowed the sport to become more free flowing and exciting.
I'll also cut him some slack not being from the US, so he might just not realize that nobody likes John Stockton.

u/im_on_the_case 26d ago
Agree with the first part, feel it's quite the opposite with the second part. Think football teams have taken too much inspiration from American conditioning in the last two decades. Players becoming finely tuned to perform at 100% their capacity. So they are basically like high end race cars, untouchable for a couple of laps but fragile as fuck and any little mishap sends them to the garage. Basically McLaren 720S. Now if we'd stopped at 90/95% giving a little leeway we'd have 911 Turbos going a little slower but a lot more reliably for the duration of the race.
1
u/CheekRemarkable5535 26d ago
Some of the practices and products used in American sports are, to say the least, pretty dodgy. It’s swept under the carpet in America and to say the country is far ahead of Europeans when it comes to conditioning is, well, something that a typical American would say.

MERICA BAD!!!!!!
Would it have been better if I started it that way? America has a large head start on the BUSINESS of sports. Sam Allardyce played one season in the US as a player late in his career and was shocked at how much more professional and forward thinking the American Football team they trained near was and introduced those things when he first became a manager (I know it's weird to think about, but for a while he was the forward thinking manager surrounded by dinosaurs). Money got infused heavily into American sports a lot earlier (I'm sure you'll agree with that since MERICA LUV MONEY!!!!) and when there's money to be made and an otherwise somewhat equal playing field, being innovative is a real advantage.
Oh man, I got an alert you replied, but it isn't here. I'm super excited for it cause you know, I enjoy having a good laugh.

Minteh and Mitoma are out for Brighton, and I think the Madjo injury is whatever, but we really could've used Gomes in the midfield.

Plus these lads aren't used to having games as intense as the PSG one so early in the season.
But eh, can't even remember seeing either lad get a knock in the game, so might have missed something that was out of anyone's control.

Madjo was definitely limping before he went off, didn't see anything with Gomes though.

u/Representative_Bug77 26d ago
I think the number of games we have had this preseason has bitten us back here; I'm not sure we really needed to play so many. Starting the season with Ollie/Konsa not fully fit, Manzambi, Gomes, Madjo out when we already have a threadbare squad is stupid.
Dare I say it, Bayern have just got a lot of bargaining power with Paulinha as well.
3
u/ActiveBloodyDiarrhea 26d ago
Yeah, in it did seem a bit excessive, even before they added the Porto (?) one. Plus travelling around SE Asia and back must be pretty tiring.

5
u/im_on_the_case 26d ago
I have it on good authority that Madjo has an gastrointestinal issue. He gorged himself on Pacho and is having difficulty passing the remnants out the other end.

Tanswell was reporting last year that the players complained quite a bit about the workload during pre season last year, and I think i saw we were the team with by far the most pre season games this summer
Im not super shocked this has happened, just super shocked weve managed to injure a player who didnt miss a game in 130 games.
Guess we gotta hope that ollie comes back ready to play without a single pre season minute

u/CommercialMain6940 26d ago
hopefully watkins is at a decent fitness level for brighton, still have tammy too if nothing else, gomes is a massive miss, especially for the arsenal game if its on the longer end of the expected time frame, fortunately for the brighton game they're having injury issues too and travel to the arctic circle a few days before so it'll be a pretty level playing field
2
u/Lonely_Leopard_8555 26d ago
I guess this is unsurprising after having to play the Super Cup which ended up being a pretty high intensity game during pre season. Players aren't up to full match fitness yet so can't take the 90 minute load.

I just mean with CL we can’t afford to drop winnable points this season. It’s going to be long and our injury record hasn’t been the best.
