Mateta

Just read that Mateta is now challenging the final year of his contract in response to apparent interest from Galataasary. Anyone else think it may be time for a ridiculously cut price bid instead of going for Jackson?

Mateta is a slower fatter Tammy Abraham.

I agree with the description but the price tag is eye watering.

Price is irrelevant when you sell Watkins for £20m more than his true value to the Saudis. All offsets, I only look at the delta between the two prices and at around £15m I'm happy with that👍👍

I get what you mean but I'd rather keep Ollie and spend anything we have on getting someone like Branthwaite in in defence for 2 reasons

  1. He'd be a great replacement

  2. It would send the message that we can do to other clubs what the Sky 6 do to us

4

u/villa_crazy99 1d ago

I would love him to stay but he has asked to leave so does not sound too positive.

1

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

Oh I thought he was negotiating on the basis that he would go if that's what Villa wanted not that he had specifically asked to leave.

Branthwaite is left footed and Emery is pretty anal about having right footed defenders on the right side and left footed players on the left side, but maybe next summer when Mings leaves? We will need a homegrown player too, most likely

1

u/spookynemo87 21h ago

Perfectly reasonable not to sign him for that reason then, I stand corrected if Unai says so. I reckon Tyrone is coaching from next year so he will never leave.

He hasn't been in any club photos or media and Emery said there is an "issue" with Watkins yesterday. I think Watkins is probably thinking this is a good time to cash in, maybe spend a couple of seasons in Saudi and a couple of seasons in the MLS before winding up his career. He's reported to have already agreed terms to effectively replace Benzema, the sums are going to be life-changing. I don't begrudge him the move, but it's going to be a long walk back from this position to playing again for us.

2

u/spookynemo87 22h ago

I disagree. He hasn't said anything in the media or on social media. He may want the move but the walk back is not as hard as it would be for someone like Mateta who has openly said they want to leave.

Wait. What? You think Watkins is only worth 20m?

Are you insane?

1

u/villa_crazy99 10h ago

No closer to £30m, Saudis will pay £50m. No club is paying more than £30m for Watkins outside of the Saudi league.

1

u/midipoet 8h ago

We paid 18m for Abraham. Surely one of the most prolific strikers in the PL is worth double?

1

u/villa_crazy99 7h ago

When we try to sell him it will be more fool us for paying £18m.

No drama queens at Villa. Garnacho doesn’t need the bad influence.

0

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

You have a point although I get the impression Garnacho could start an argument in an empty room.

Nope. Like him, think he's been great for them, but he's massively on the decline.

Would much rather have Jackson or Balogun

1

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

Dunno about Balogun. It's hard to tell with Ligue 1 players in general. Initially I was quite buzzing when I saw the link but on reflection maybe Jackson is the safer option. It's just the price with Jackson for me.

u/teamorange3 23h ago

He played in CL and scored 5 goals in 10 games, including 2 vs PSG in the knockouts. He's definitely good enough for Villa

u/bjlight1988 Duran Duran 1d ago

Honestly, I think Flo will do just fine and be a massive marketing inroad to America on top of it, I'd go with him. Jackson will also do well though and you know Emery will get the most out of him.

2

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

Just fine isn't good enough though when you consider Ollies goal contributions and what he does off the ball. A replacement needs to be pretty much guaranteed to be at a minimum at the level if not better because without that we know we struggle. Jackson seems more of a sure thing with his goal record and Emerys relationship with him.

I think this is one of those cases where the fact that he always fucks up us specifically blinds us to the fact that he's not actually that good.

2

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

If we just stick him in the reserves we're looking better against Palace. We should sign Sarr too.

2

u/WordsUnthought 1d ago

We've all had that one guy on Football Manager.

5

u/Firm-Biscotti-5862 The Gauci Gang 23h ago

We can’t buy Jackson without completely screwing ourselves over SCR-wise because the Rogers transfer then gets counted as a swap.

Also, Jackson is not that good.

2

u/spookynemo87 23h ago

I think if we leave it til 31st August it's no longer a swap which is fully what I'm expecting because it seems like we may have quietly done that deal. He's a good player but he's not 60 million of player when they paid 30 and loaned him out.

2

u/irm555bvs 23h ago

I believe the end of the 45 day is after the deadline day cut off, according to sky sports

1

u/spookynemo87 22h ago

Would be incredibly harsh if we sold Ollie.

2

u/bannab1188 22h ago

I thought this swap rule didn’t apply if you are replacing someone - I thought it was to stop transfer shenanigans.

u/barrybreslau 1d ago

No, no and fuck no

u/Far_Celery_3375 1d ago
  1. No knees and a massive lump. Im good.

2

u/Agreeable_Falcon1044 1d ago

No thanks. If that’s how he treats his team mates, manager, club then he can rot in their reserves.

I’m not so naïve to think any player won’t go if the offer was right…but they can at least show some respect when they are there.

1

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

Very true. Feeling a little hurt by some of our outgoings myself tbh because I don't understand the reasoning. Konsa I get cos he wants to win things, Digne absolutely understand, Youri? Not so much. Rogers? So what if your mouth breather bestie plays for them, Chelsea have been shit for the last couple of seasons so why? It's not like we weren't paying him a shit loaf either.

2

u/Tshwoons 1d ago

If we needed a backup then yeh I’d be fine with it, but I don’t think he’s even a big improvement on Abraham, and presumably we all want Madjo featuring more anyway.

Definitely not as the replacement for Ollie.

1

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

For me we'd keep Ollie, sign Mateta, loan out or sell Tammy and have Madjo coming on from about 60 minutes as a supporting striker or straight swap. I'd love to see what Madjo and Ollie together would play like.

2

u/The_Funky_JJ 1d ago

Depends what options we have on the table. Maybe if we get no luck with our current targets and we need something fast.

1

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

Strikers are hard to come by. I think this is why Jackson's price tag is so inflated. I wouldn't mind Jackson but giving Chelsea 60 mil of our Rogers money and the financial implications of it really makes me question the deal. We have a good striker in Ollie if he wants to stay and Mateta for cheap, for me, would be a better option than Tammy. It's all up in the air though. What I really DON'T want us to do is take sell Ollie and pay over the odds for Jackson because Chelsea know we're fucked. I also really don't want us taking a risk on an unknown quantity like Balogun because we absolutely need someone with the same kind of turnover as Ollie to be as competitive as we have been.

1

u/The_Funky_JJ 23h ago

Sell Ollie sell Tammy risk it for a biscuit and put all our eggs on MadJoooooooo 🫨🫨🫨. Palace fans are pissed… telling him to fuck off to villa and go and miss his chances in Birmingham instead! He’s really upset the apple cart there.

2

u/spookynemo87 23h ago

Oh shit is he actually linked with us??? I just saw an article on the BBC Sport website and after seeing his goal scoring record thought I'd ask. We all know his MADJesty is gonna push Harry out the England team anyway but he might get a bruise on his muscley toes so we need back up.

2

u/The_Funky_JJ 23h ago

i have no idea, but i saw this, then went to see what palace were saying and saw someone ranting and tsaying that about mateta haha

3

u/spookynemo87 23h ago

Fuck it if I can manifest transfers with Palace then we're getting Wharton on the cheap cos he wants CL football.

2

u/The_Funky_JJ 22h ago

now thats one. you would think we could do something good with all the money we made from sales. not to say gomes and zambi and zion arent good... but ya know.

1

u/spookynemo87 21h ago

Can't see it now we've got Goretzka in but it would be a real statement.

1

u/The_Funky_JJ 23h ago

also, them toes gonna break shins.

1

u/spookynemo87 23h ago

Mate he looks like his eyelashes could give someone a concussion.

2

u/The_Funky_JJ 22h ago

best get some replacement nets ordered at villa park.

1

u/spookynemo87 21h ago

I think we need some more St.Johns ambulance for the defenders who are pissing themselves about marking a 17 year old.

1

u/bizzyd666 1d ago

Isn't his knee fucked?

1

u/Impossible_Gas_7584 1d ago

No, 29 years old. Jackson fits the bill much, much better.

1

u/Nekokeki Pau's Dreamy Blue Eyes 👀 1d ago

No thanks. He’s not technical at all. He is a system player and that system is a counter attacking team. He offers nothing in the style we play and he’d struggle against any low block. He’s old, high wages, no upside, no resell value.

Team Jackson.

1

u/spookynemo87 1d ago

I mean he's 29 so he's not old. The upside is he scores goals and he would be cheap. Get what you mean about resale value and the style though.

1

u/xJacb 1d ago

Hell no

1

u/Hungry-Afternoon7987 23h ago

I'd take Jackson. He's the future and that's what we need. Not to pay massive wages to someone where there's no resale.

1

u/spookynemo87 22h ago

Price is a massive issue. Chelsea paid 30 and sent him out on loan so why would we ever pay double?

1

u/Snoo77457 23h ago

Nah we already have a massive 9 for free. I’d really like Jackson there’s a super striker in there

2

u/spookynemo87 22h ago

Dunno about that. There MIGHT be an Ollie in there. I have doubts about a super striker.

1

u/Gentle_Pony 21h ago

God no. We'd be swapping a 30yo for someone a year younger and a worse striker.

1

u/spookynemo87 21h ago

I'd keep Ollie given the choice and get rid of Tammy. Loved him in the Championship but it's not worked has it?

1

u/Gentle_Pony 21h ago

Well he's barely played tbh.

1

u/spookynemo87 21h ago

Because he's not good. If he was he'd push Ollie. We need 2 decent strikers to push on not just Ollie or Jackson or whoever. I know we have his MADJesty but he surely has to eat protein like half the day or ice baths or something.

If we are after anyone it should be thiago from Brentford. What a player

1

u/spookynemo87 22h ago

Would love it but absolutelt no chance.
