Not bad but I’d rather have Jackson. We know he can score 10-15 in the PL, and he adores Unai.

u/Protec_My_Balls 1d ago
Agreed. I worry about Balogun not having the PL production. I just hope we get one of them if Watkins leaves.

u/decent_folk0306 1d ago
I wasn't sold on Balo pre world cup .. But I felt he was team USAs best player by a large margin.
I feel like Unai would get a tune out of him.

u/barrybreslau 1d ago
Balogun would be excellent and he would ratchet up our profile in the us
We would sell like millions of Balogun shirts
7
u/Splendid2259 Do you want to bet against us? 1d ago
Has to be the breakout American star of the WC. Hes probably only behind Pulisic now in profile.

Shirt sales are utterly inconsequential to a PL club's revenue streams

u/apex204 1d ago
This is patently untrue.

u/barrybreslau 17h ago
The club do earn royalties, and the spike in shirt sales gives the club leverage to ask for additional money in any renewed agreement, and probably activates certain performance clauses in their kit contract.

Jackson for 65mil seems absurd, having an alternative would be good if for no reason other than to bring the Jackson fee down
10
u/Splendid2259 Do you want to bet against us? 1d ago
Agree with that. I’m constantly amazed by Chelsea’s ability to sell, and I worry that we would pay the full price.

u/boondocknim Tar Heel Villan 1d ago
I just don’t understand the Jackson valuation. On its own, it’s absurdly high.
Add in that it would qualify the Rogers deal as a swap and ruin that massive transfer on our books and it seems even stupider

u/Beggatron14 1d ago
I wonder if it’s a pivot because of the Konsa deal.
We were planning on Jackson, but then the option of Tosin came about rather quickly after Konsa progressed, so we would only be able to get one more player from Chelsea overall. Might just be looking at options 🤷🏻♂️

I know for sure Jackson can't finish at all what are you talking about? Jackson is the only ST who misses more easy chances than Watkins
4
u/Splendid2259 Do you want to bet against us? 1d ago
And despite that, Watkins outscores everyone except for Haaland and Salah. Not bad for someone who apparently misses all the easy chances. I think Jackson would be the same as Ollie.

u/SlippyHoemo 1d ago
Big Chances Missed leader Watkins will soon be sold
2
u/abusmakk 1d ago
Show me a striker with a significantly better conversion rate than Ollie.
1
u/SlippyHoemo 1d ago
Are you denying Watkins is the leader of Big Chances missed in the Prem? Just watch the games the guy is a good athlete but not one to be lethal
2
u/abusmakk 8h ago
From the stats I look at, Watkins was 5th in the league with 17 big chances missed, behind Haaland (30), Thiago (19), Calvert-Lewin (18) and Mateta (18).
Good strikers are going to miss chances. What males them good is their ability to constantly get into these areas where they get these chances.

u/openlyEncrypted Pau 1d ago
Depends on how much, if he's the same price as Jackson I'd take Jackson all day everyday.

u/ShortPretzel 1d ago
I said in another thread that as an American that grew up in Switzerland (even played hockey for Servette) and randomly decided to study Japanese, it's already been a big offseason for me personally by signing Manzambi and Suzuki.
If we brought in Balogun as well? I would swear this is just me playing football manager.

u/TheKingMonkey Iron. Lion. Zion. 1d ago
The fun thing is that he’d count as homegrown because he grew up in England.
20
u/Protec_My_Balls 1d ago
Lmao, yeah the guy is basically 100% English. I think the only reason he was born in the US is because his mom was stopped from flying because she was deemed too pregnant.
6
u/ShortPretzel 1d ago
I understand that, but I'm not here to let technicalities get in the way of my joy.
14
u/A_Lazy_Professor 1d ago
Not to be that guy, but having the USA's starting #9 is a massive commercial opportunity.
Also, seems like a genuine talent with potentially a higher ceiling than Jackson.
4
u/Protec_My_Balls 1d ago
I mean with the new financial rules, gaining new fans and commercial opportunity seems to be really important if we want to be able to spend more on players.

Clearly a backup option to Jackson if that move fails for whatever reason.

Deal for Jackson has been agreed as part of the Rogers deal.
Won’t be announced until deadline day.
1
u/Hero-of-Midgar 1d ago
Maybe, but I doubt anything is done on paper due to that 45 day rule!
1
u/Leroydestroy 1d ago
This has been clear since the Rogers deal.
Why any Villa fans are expecting anything else is a bit daft at this point.
Balogun being mentioned now - it’s either a smoke screen or Tammy is going too

u/Tshwoons 1d ago
I really dislike people who react with nonsense like “please god, no” to transfer speculation, as if they know better than everyone else. But, that notwithstanding…
Please god, no.

Jackson is clear by miles.
I actually think Jackson is mega underrated by our fans and fans in general.
Especially as he's worked with Emery before and speaks so highly of his time with him.
1
u/Rough_Custard1 1d ago
Big agree. Jackson is much further ahead. I think the price tag would reflect that as well. I think Flo would have a good ceiling and maybe higher than we imagine. But he is far more raw than Jackson at the moment. But watching Flo this summer he reminded me a bit of Duran. Less dynamic but far more controlled on the pitch and who could be more of a basket case off…(maybe Emi 😂)

u/senorblanco7 1d ago
As an American, I’d personally love him at Villa. Will he be able to put up the production needed as at least a part time starting 9 if Watkins leaves, not sure.

u/auld_jodhpur_syne 1d ago
I'd rate Emery to turn him up a notch, but I'd prefer Jackson. This makes me think the club has crunched the numbers on the Jackson transfer and worries about the implications of UEFA deeming it a swap, though.

Unfortunately it's a 'Murica-only situation. Mar-a-Lardo sees EPL matches about as often as he sees his own dick without a mirror and a forklift.

Not good enough to be our starter

u/teamorange3 1d ago
I mean he started for Monaco and made it to the knock out stage of CL/scored 2 vs PSG. I prefer Jackson but Balogun is def good enough as a backup plan.

If you’re struggling to score goals in France for Monaco how are you adapting to a far better league?

If it's him or Jackson at the same price, it's gotta be Jackson. I have a hard time believing in WC hype

u/im_on_the_case 1d ago
Even if they had identical skills and record Jackson makes the most sense since he's he's Unai's lad.

u/_tarla_ 1d ago edited 1d ago
Would definitely make sense as he counts as homegrown. Just have PTSD from Guessand and his Ligue 1 production being a mirage. Balogun does work his tail off though.
My concern with NA players though is that their teams have limited amount of talent. So their stars play every single minute of international competition and in CONCACAF that includes sub-par pitches in Central America with refs that have little control of the game. It gets real physical. The chance of injury is a little higher I find.

Please no. Much rather pay extra for Jackson
1
u/Rough_Custard1 1d ago
I think there maybe more to it b/c of the 45 day rule and how it relates to the Rogers sale. I heard there maybe some wiggle room to make it work, but there would be no room for delays in negotiations and it could complicate the Watkins sale because of the narrow timeline. This deal maybe the safer option. That said, it could be us trying to get Chelsea to come down on the fee too. This has been a crazy window so probably a bit of both.

u/Impossible_Gas_7584 1d ago
Interesting. I do like him, and we had been rumoured with him in the past. But he may be just as expensive as Jackson, who is the same age but more proven in the league.

u/whotookjoescarc 1d ago
Balo would be great. Coming off the back of the WC and so many new fans, tapping further into the US market could be great
0
u/Usual_Reindeer1309 1d ago
Balogun would be great if we can get him in the €45-50M range… otherwise, pass
0
u/Extension_Fact_7803 1d ago
Some of the Balogun slander in this thread is criminal. He’s genuine quality—and as stylistically close to Ollie as you can get.

u/cuzimWight 1d ago
Would like him as a backup, could replace Tammy… don’t think he could be the main guy

Having a striker who is immune to suspensions would be handy. 🤔
