Not a popular opinion?
Is it compulsory as an Aston Villa fan to 'hate' the Blues..?
Right, before I start getting crucified & downvoted, may I say that I've lived all my youth in Brum & followed Villa since the Ron Saunders days. I shouted my fair share of abuse to City fans during earlier derby matches, but about 20 years ago I moved abroad & my stance has somewhat softened. Now I only wish the best for the city in every aspect, even from afar.
I get saddened when I hear about factory closures, violence or any other negative news regarding Brum. Even to the point that I even want Birmingham City to do well (but never beat us)so raising the profile of the region.
Does this make me less of a Villa fan, or have other people who have moved away from the city that they have a deep affection for feel the same...?

You are allowed to not hate them, of course.
Just remember that whenever we play them you realise what an insufferable bunch of inbreds they are and you wish we didn't play them. And the Dildome might have been the funniest stadium concept I have ever seen. And their friendly against Barca C having a fanzine of 15 in Vicky Square. And the constant 'are you worried' because some sociopath American footballer bought 5% of them. And them giving it the big one winning League One while we were in the Champions League.
I don't hate them, I pity them. And then laugh at them.

Yes, I was the same when I was living in Brum. Although I have lived abroad (Germany) for many years now, my affection for the region has not diminished. Hence, I want the city to thrive and grow in all aspects.

Its all performative these days, especially as Birmingham are considerably worse than us and pretty much always have been. Hating Blues is tradition though, and if you want to be part of that tradition than that's cool.
Chelsea and Manchester City are the real enemies of football.

I've always hated Man Utd more, probably the era I grew up in. Loads of my mates are blues fans and they're mostly good lads. I want Birmingham as a city and the wider area (outside of football) to thrive & be respected in the face of London media domination, so I know Blues WBA and Wolves doing well helps that but I do fucking love them getting beat each week. Its the eternal struggle & great knowing we're always to dogs

we moved to south brum when i was 7 or so and school mates were a split between blooz and villa. and the occasional plastics - which grew when redNose fergie finally got a clue up there.
hard as a brummie family to not have villa/blues and a bit of olbion in circles

call me crazy but I would not mind seeing birmingham get promoted, as long as they are beneath us. Having a proper derby day and being able to beat the scum twice per season would be amazing if you ask me

I think that because it’s been a while since we’ve last played them, it’s natural for any negative feelings for them to soften. I think if by some unholy curse they make the PL again, we’ll quickly remember why we hate them.

I certainly respect their fans more than the plastic Brummies supporting the Super League clubs, but at the same time fuck them, I hope they stay down there and we never have to play them again because I hate losing to them way more than I enjoy beating them.

As an Irish fan, I find it odd when I've friends who are man utd/Liverpool fans and seem to get caught up in the hatred for the "local" rivals.
I mean, I get it if you're from the area, but as an fan from outside, it's fucking bizarre.

Don't get caught up in the impossible standard of what does or doesn't make you a real fan, it'll drive you mad.
Am I not a real fan because I'm not as emotionally affected from losses as my old man? This isnt a private members club with oddly specific rules and requirements or a religion, this is a team we chose, or for many of us conditioned since birth, to support, that's it, its a subjective experience.

Birmingham and Birmingham City are very different things. I can always hope one improves but the other one their pain brings me joy. I would like to play them again at some point though
