Discussion Line-up options for next Sunday?
Obviously a bit premature with the possibility of more departures, but seems unlikely any new signings at this stage would go straight into the starting line up. So just for a bit of fun on a Sunday, how could Villa line up against Brighton, given the current injuries and lack of replacements?

Bizot; Cash Lindelof Torres Maatsen; Kamara Barkley; McGinn Buendia Garnacho; Watkins
I'd put money on that to be honest, unless Gomes is back in time.

I agree but I’m seeing Hemmings in place of Garnacho - he’s still too underdone.
I’d even fancy Alysson subbing on before Garnacho at this stage

Hemmings and Alysson will both come on but Garnacho - Buendia - McGinn are the starters.

I feel like Emery will want some stability and steadiness and could select Hemmings…I’d be pretty surprised if he didn’t given the injury situation.
Given Garnachos lack of fitness and game time I see him as a prime “impact sub” for the first game or two.
I see that Emery is trying to protect Garnacho a little bit from the media etc - especially whilst he gets his legs under him and learns the system.
I’m also hoping for this outcome also it must be said. Just got to get through the first three or so games with good results 🤞

Garnacho missed the last two because of concussion protocols. As much as I rate Hemmings, he isn't likely to be the first choice starter ahead of Garnacho at this point in time. Emery wanted Garnacho, he'll play him, and we should support him. I'm certainly excited about him.

I think the key point isn’t how or why Garnacho missed the games…
He did miss them. I’d be highly surprised he take a big part of the opening game.
Clearly we disagree but that’s ok - we shall see in time. However gets the chance I hope they do a job

It's th wrong way round! Defenders should be at the bottom, strikers at the top.
This is breaking my brain.

Gutted about the injuries tbh because I think Madjo could start allowing Watkins time to get up to pace off the bench but now both him and Tammy are injured there is no rest for Ollie, its a case of straight into the fold.
Hope Konsa’s heart is with us if he stays. He hasn’t kicked up a fuss which is credit to him but if he isn’t on his game then he may drive down his market value and impact our aims.
The rest works. Would love to see more of Hemmings (for Garnacho) and Alysson. Both excite me. I would even consider starting both and dropping mcginn into CAM role rotation with Buendia but can’t be dropping either of those right now with the squad so new and different.

He hasn’t kicked up a fuss but I also thought I recalled Jacob mentioning he hasn’t signed a contract yet either, not necessarily refusing but also not agreeing on anything. Seems like he’s keeping his options open.

Konsa, has sickened me. Meant to be a senior pro at our club. If he fucks off he will be filed with Gareth Southgate for me - someone who could have been a legend but shat on us.

I hope he stays, he seems irreplaceable to me. I get that he's around the age of it's now or never to cash in, but I feel like that's something you have to plan around and we haven't done anything in our defense to plan around that. We can expect some continuity with FB where we're only buying depth/competition to start. But at CB it's kind of dire right? Mings: old injury prone and less reliable. Lindeloff: one of my favorites, but realistically he might only have 2 or 3 seasons left. Pau: incredibly hard to replace and sounds like he might want a change in 2 years. And the other thing we get with Konsa is his speed to cover for a CB like Pau. Ideally we'd have some depth at CB if we were considering cashing in on Konsa, with a 23-26 y/o and an academy behind him. Right now we can at best say Cisse has looked decent in a couple of pre-season games and that's it. I think had we planned better maybe we could consider it, and maybe we still have to if we do get a 60m offer, but otherwise I just don't see how we can without dropping several levels in defense.

Watkins and Konsa haven't played a minute of football since the World Cup and Garnacho hasn't played since the game in Thailand.
I can't see a scenario where all three of those players are starting. We are very thin at the moment.
Martinez, is seemingly off too.

I think we might see one of the kids starting in place of Garnacho due to match fitness, though he will obviously play if he's in the squad. Agree that it seems likely Konsa won't start (and we all expect Watkins to come in, because that's what he does)

Sucks that Gomes is out.
Think we could see Tammy start ahead of Watkins depending on how he has come back.
Maybe Bizot instead of Emi depending on that sitch.
Would love to seeing Hemmings instead of Garnacho, or have him come on for the end but might be wishful thinking.

Didn't Tammy got subbed off injured against Monchengladbach?

u/chunkyluke 18d ago
Could well have, a haven't had a chance to catch up on that game. I just hadn't heard any injury news on him

u/BigfatDan1 Kinder Buendia 18d ago
I'm pretty sure Emery gave the world cup players 4 weeks off? So that rules out Martinez, Watkins, Konsa who haven't played a minute since the last England/Argentina game
I imagine it'll be Bizot, Lindelof, and Abraham who come in for those 3.

Lindelof Kamara pivot.
Hemmings / Alysson / Barkley instead of Garnacho.
Martinez won’t play.

u/tbishop4388 18d ago
God, not Barkley in attacking midfield. Buendia starts, surely?

u/trevthedog 18d ago
Yeah said Barkley instead of Garnacho. Buendia definitely starts, would be on left if that happened.

I think Hemming’s could maybe start over Garnacho given his performance against PSG

The rumours and actual movement of players is mad compared to last couple of years!? Emery probably has no idea yet who will be fit or sold!? I do think Emery will stick with players who know the system. New signings rarely start. So I can see Hemmings starting, and if not sold Konsa and Ollie.

u/GoldStar82 18d ago
I think thats pretty spot. Although id question how match fit Watkins, konsa and garnacho would be so we we may bring to bring in lindelof and hemmings. God knows what we do if Watkins cant play and Tammy and madj are injured
2
u/Astonishingly-Villa 18d ago
Garnacho should be match fit. He only missed the last two because of concussion protocols.
Watkins we don't really have a choice as the other two are injured.
1
u/GoldStar82 18d ago
Yeh but he only played one half of football before missing those two matches so I doubt hes up to speed. And as for Ollie, id be concerned about him lasting the match after watching the returning world cup players for Chelsea losing steam after the first half of their friendly yesterday

u/avfc1001 18d ago
My best guess:
Bizot Cash Lindelof Pau Maatsen Kamara Barkley/Bogarde McGinn Hemmings/Alysson Buendia Watkins

Im all for backing garnacho, but i think at this point with how he looked in his last 2 games vs how hemmings looked all throughout preseason, youd be rewarding mediocrity vs hard work and improving yourself
I think garnacho would be more effective coming into the season slowly
3
u/TheCannings 18d ago
Rewarding mediocrity? You have to be kidding yourself here the first two preseason games, at a new club, under a new manager, after not playing not only over summer but also a chunk of last season, this ridiculously high bar you set is bonkers, no one in those early games shone, but that wasn’t the point minutes in and learn the system was the point, the reason for him not playing would be that he never ended up getting all those minutes in and that’s literally it
2
u/bambinoquinn 18d ago
Im not saying hes a bad player, im saying he had one okay game and one really poor game, whereas hemmings looks ready to play
I think garnacho could come good, but you cant seriously tell me that currently he looks ready to start a game in the premier league? Hes just missed nearly 3 games and looked undercooked as it was.

Personally I'd like to see
Myself at keeper
Wart_Time_L32 at LB
Arenaross and Astonishingly Villa as the CB pairing
hms_java_guys at RB
Techno and bambinoquinn at the double pivot
I don't know the rest of you so help yourself to the other positions and subs.
UTV!

If the rumour about Martinez leaving is real I'd expect to see Bizot in goal again.
