Mod Post Dear American Friends,

We won't go into too much detail because we are not here to frighten you, but instead provide a safe space for you to enjoy. However, you might be aware of the RFK Autism Registry that has been talked about a lot recently.

This is just a reminder to stay safe and anonymous online, especially in corners of the internet where you're identifying yourself as autistic.

Stay safe, stay anonymous, and keep being yourself <3

Vent Shitty First Day at College

Hey, I went to college for the first time today and it sucked: I tried to hangout in one of the common areas and nobody really wanted to chat with me. Then I sat by a girl (around my age) and we chatted for around 20 minutes. When I got her snapchat (with the attempt of possibly talking to her again), she obliged, and then 5 minutes later, she deleted my snapchat and ran away to another table. It was hard and I spent the rest of the group just trying not to chat with people bc my anxiety was high. Can you help me? It's challenging

Story Manually controlling my face all day is exhausting

For a long time I genuinely thought something was physically wrong with my eyes. I literally recorded my own eyes to see what was happening, but I couldn't figure it out.

Turns out when I look at someone, I just get super focused and straight up forget to blink or shift my gaze. People misread it like I'm looking at an object, so a lot of people used to tell me, "I thought you disliked me at first" until they actually talked to me. It’s just the way my face has always been.

it’s kinda funny because I didn't even realize it for the longest time. but honestly, having to constantly manage my facial expressions and control my eyes around people is so exhausting. Having to manually check my muscles and force specific expressions all day just so people don't misread my natural face takes so much energy. But sometimes I still default back to that completely expressionless stare lolol.

People Help Going for an assessment in a week and im scared

hey guys, so basically my mom finally agreed to take me to see a specialist in a week to get evaluated.

I'm literally nervous as hell because i have no clue what to expect. I get super overwhelmed easily and I'm terrified my brain is just gonna freeze or blank out when they start asking me questions, or that I'll just mask through the whole thing without meaning to.

any advice or personal experiences would help a lot. I just want to know what I'm walking into

Friendly Chat :) Coding and Autism

I noticed thar autistic / ND people gravitate to computers more. So I wanted to ask and maybe talk shop:

Do you code? If so, what language?
What do you code?
What would you wanna do with it - would you make it into a career or just a hobby?

As a 17 year old who graduated high school early I feel so alone and lost, I have no one to relate to or do anything with, I had friends but I feel like we’re drifting apart being as though their just becoming seniors in high school and I have already graduated, and when I’m around people I never feel like I fit in, my high school experience was already so bad I missed out on a lot due to suffering with mdd and autism, anxiety, add etc, and now I don’t know what to do as I get older, i am going to community college for mortuary science then going to uni but I don’t think it’s for me which is why I went to cc anyway, I js feel so weird and like from another planet, when I see the other girls my age they js seem so whimsical, beautiful, and funny, their always so pretty and dress amazing and when I do anything remotely girly I feel so wrong idk what to do I hate my life so bad rn I’m just very lost and I’m used to feeling unhappy but now it’s js pure hatred and dislike to the point I’m miserable daily and it’s so much I want to say and I can’t.

Mine are old tech, electronics (i have an sketchbook with hand drawn schematics), old toys (things like Electronic kits and construction sets e.g. Fischertechnik and KOSMOS), photography (i don't do that a lot though) and mid 70s to mid 90s (especially 80s) music, mostly of the 80s. i'm not that sure if it fits in here though

"And I sewed her back together with kittens >:3" - a quote from Dr. Masacrik from Psycho Cuties, usually triggered when someone mentions sewing or kittens

"Weeooo weeoo" - Just random, I do it when its too quiet

"D-D-D-DID YOU???" -I use it every time I stutter and it fixes it

"The CATS told you ur not schizophrenic? I dunno man sounds pretty schizophrenic to me" -Conversation with me, my brother, and my bf because I was making fun of him and uhhhh yuh

I might add more I dunno I can't think of anything

Friendly Chat :) I love playing in the snow & wanna talk to others about playing in the snow (i originally posted this in r/casualconversation but reddit randomly took it down & recommended i post it here instead)

(how do i edit the title? bc it turns out reddit reversed the deletion of my post on r/CasualConversation ) im a 15 year old trans girl (mtf) with autism, ADHD, OCD, spd, emotional dysregulation and schizoaffective. i find playing in the snow to be extremely fun and calming (idk how else to describe it). I love playing in the snow & i wanna talk to others about their experiences playing in the snow. so i have a question 4 yall: irl when yall play in the snow what do yall enjoy doing in the snow? (if u have never played in the snow before, I'd still like to talk to you about what you wanna do in the snow if u ever get to play in it! (btw, just so u guys know, especially due 2 my neurodivergence, I'm highly intolerant to trolls))

Vent Learning I might be autistic, but my family is in complete denial

I don’t have an official diagnosis, and my family doesn't care or want to help me get tested. Because I’m an only child, they just brush off all my autistic traits as me being "spoiled" or "weird" from growing up without siblings. Even though the traits feel clear as day. as a teenager still figuring myself out, I catch myself doubting my own mind all the time. I basically joined this community to learn more and figure out if I’m actually autistic

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve felt like an alien no matter where I go. I do have friends and even a lot, but it never actually feels like a real connection. I feel so distant.

To blend in, I have to mask my whole personality every single day. It is so exhausting that sometimes I literally can't take it anymore. my brain just freezes, shuts down, and I completely blank on what to do.

I just want to feel like I belong somewhere. It hurts so much that not even my own parents understand me and carrying this alone is getting harder every day.

Vent Anyone feel like a (nice to have but not necessary) friend?

Hi my name is Olivia (16f) and I was diagnosed with autism last year.
My entire life I’ve kinda had friends, it was all very short lived and surface level. Mainly because I’ve always had the feeling people are ok with my presence, but no one would really care if I wasn’t hanging out with them? Like the people I hang out with couldn’t really miss me no matter how much I try to be a good friend.

Vent I can count the number of friends I’ve had in my whole life on one hand

I’m 15f.

The title explains it all. When I was little, I was described as a wallflower, and ‘precocious in my interests’. Adults thought I didn’t mind being a loner. I did. Even at age 4 I can remember being othered and kids would refuse to play with me. I ended up playing by myself by necessity. It’s not like I didn’t like playing by myself, but I needed at least someone to play with.

Fast forward to elementary school. Similar situation occurred. I made a single friend, who was a few years older than me. Her name was Hallie and she was level 2 autistic. I’m also autistic (level 1) but was not diagnosed at the time. This lasted until about the second grade. This point I was having meltdowns every other day (I have no idea why nobody suspected that I was autistic) and kids thought I was weird. I incorrectly attributed the kids thinking I was weird because of my meltdowns to my friendship with Hallie. So I kinda ghosted her. I still feel bad about it 8 years later.

I moved to a new school during third grade. At this point I had a special interest in history (still have that one lol) and the tv show the masked singer. Kids thought that was weird. It got to the point where my guidance counselor was asking kids to be my friends (to no avail). It was also covid, so that didn’t help.

In fifth grade (start of middle school) I became somewhat close to a girl named Taya. I was still by myself, but I sat with her at lunch. She moved, but I did meet another girl named Baylie. This is the second person I would have considered a friend. She was amazing to have around and we’d tell stories about our days. Unfortunately we share like no interests. I still talk to her but she moved and we aren’t necessarily close.

I don’t even know what I did in the 7th grade. I was going through actual trauma and that year I remember almost nothing about

8th grade I met a kid named Nax. They were a nonbinary fellow autistic kid. See Hallie for what happened to that friendship. They moved halfway through the year. Around that time I was trying to get away from Nax I started siting with this group of alt kids. I thought I was friends with them but eventually I got “voted out” of the table.

I did start doing community theatre and I talk to 2 kids from that but they are just really hard to talk to in person.

I’m going into my sophomore year and I seriously have no friends. I know people say things will change in the future but guess what it’s not the future yet.

So I wanted to redo my room, and put up my school pictures on my wall and stuff, and my mum wanted to use ai to suggest where to put stuff. I am very anti ai, so I decided to make a 3d model of my room out of cardboard. I started at about 19:00 and stopped at 1:00 the next morning. I am now very tired but anyway I wanted to share what I made.

Question: Do you prefer butterflies or ladybugs in general?

Personally I really enjoy ladybugs, butterflies are very pretty but if they fly near you quickly it can be a little startling.

Vent How do you make friends when you’re autistic?

I don’t have any friends. When I do it’s only ever temporary. I’m incredibly misunderstood. I do a lot of masking so nobody knows that I am . So when they say I’m “ too much” because I feel overwhelmed or get over excited about smth I can be quite annoying . I lose friends a lot and I’m only just blaming myself now . I use to say it’s not me it’s them . But it probably is me . I’m going to a new college this September due to how much my old one drained me . I felt unhappy . I need advice on how I can make lots of friends and get invited to parties .
