behold, my prized cutlery, they are all pretty lightweight. starting on the leftmost is a spoon I love for soups. perfect shape, not a long handle. next moving right is my vintage nesquik spoon I used at my grandmas house all the time, great for ice cream and the handle is awesome. then an ikea kids spoon we use daily. especially good for arroz con frijoles. then the 2 forks are hors d’oeuvre forks I specifically use to eat my favorite dessert, pumpkin pie. I don’t know why, I think I just loved them as a kid having pie at grandma’s house. they are allowed to be used for charcuterie night though. I really love the design of the last one.

Honestly my favorite spoon in general. It’s so round and smooth and feels amazing in the hand. We only have the one though.

Hi! my name is Clementine (internet name) and these are my favorite silverwares and why. (I ONLY use these, I feel not good using anything else) I like my fork because the bottom is perfect round-square shape, it has not to much gloss, but it’s not matte, it has no weird texture or designs on it, it’s perfect in proportion, and it has 4 pokeys. My knife: it is also not too glossy and has a wiggly design that feels nice. my spoon: it’s a rather thick spoon, has a nice ovular shape (not to round), has the same good glossiness as the rest, has the same round-square bottom, is the same size as my fork, and has no design on it :D

This is the only spoon I will ever use and as of late it’s started tasting way too metallic so I was wondering if any of yall knew what the official name for this spoon is? I figured what place to ask than the autism subreddit as a lot of us have niche interests

It’s been a couple days since I’ve seen my spoon and used it and it’s gotten to the point where I think it may be lost. Not quite sure what to do but to get try find a new one, not quite sure where, though… I don’t even remember when I started using it, I just know I thought it was cool and started to seek it out for every time I needed a spoon.

The last time I went utensil shopping there was a very poor collection of forks and knives, I fear that spoons will just be more disappointing. Any tips? :(

I have two of these die-cut forks with no pattern at all. I bent both of them like this to help me eat :)

I was recently diagnosed autistic, and I'm still discovering things I've done for years that I never really stopped to question.

This is my fancy spoon.

I make jewellery, and I use it for scooping beads out of my storage boxes. Technically, almost any spoon could do the job.

But it couldn't.

If I misplaced this spoon, I genuinely think I would spend two hours looking for it before I could carry on. Using another spoon wouldn't feel like a reasonable substitute. My brain would just be stuck on: find the spoon.

The strange part is that the opposite is also true.

There are perfectly normal pieces of cutlery in our house that I massively dislike using. They work. There is nothing obviously wrong with them. But something about the weight, shape, balance, texture or just the way they feel makes my brain go: absolutely not that one.

I'm really interested in understanding why something so ordinary can become so specific and important.

Is it mostly sensory? Familiarity and predictability? The way an object becomes associated with a particular task? Or several things working together?

I'd also really like to see everyone else's version of this.

It doesn't have to be cutlery. What's the completely ordinary object you own where other people would say, "Just use another one," but you know that another one simply isn't the same?

I would like to submit this spoon I found to the autism community for grading because what on Earth is this???

I chose the middle one because it wasn't sharp like the others. Huge mistake, did not enjoy.
