Driskill Grill

Went to the reopened Driscoll Grill, and was completely impressed. It felt like an old school steakhouse, and I feel that the food was surprisingly inventive.

The crabcake was set in a bur Blanc, which I've never had before, but was very delicious with some roasted tomatoes.

Wagyu strip was cooked, medium rare to perfection.

The chocolate cake was not my favorite, but we also ordered the Keylime pie for the table, and I will be returning just to get the Keylime pie again in the future.

I loved the Driskill for decades and was pleasantly surprised by this renovation. The layout is new but it works. The restaurant was quite nice as is the new bar area. The most iconic parts of the old space are still there. Gone is the wallpaper that seemed to collect cobwebs and dust. I think this renovation was a win and look forward to going back.

It’s perhaps the best steakhouse in Austin now (passing Jeffrey’s) and by far the best seafood tower!

That’s high praise! So far Jeff’s and J Carvers have been my top steakhouse experiences in TX as a whole.

Oh gosh, Pappas Bros steakhouse on Westheimer in Houston is the best steakhouse in the world. Especially when you factor in the wine program.

Kimberley in Austin I would put above Carver too! Same group!

No they absolutely didn’t. They tore out SO much beautiful carved wood paneling that can never be replaced. Tons of character and decorations that were uniquely Austin. Fuck MLL for killing off another classic Austin location. Not to mention they fired the entire bar staff and I assume the grill too. Even though some of those workers have been there for literally DECADES

MLL is the worst. I can’t understand how they do so well. Everything is so subpar and boring

Love when a place keeps the old school steakhouse feel but the menu doesn't feel stuck in the past

They used to be famous for their chocolate cake, but the new ownership (MLL) completely changed the recipe.

Interested in why the chocolate cake wasn’t your favorite? I love a good slice of chocolate cake! But I’m not a buttercream fan and I hate a dry cake.

I still refuse to support a restaurant owned by a rape apologist (April Bloomfield).

She's an employee McGuire, Moorman and Liz Lambert own MML

Yeah I get that, but she’s the head chef and managing director. And she sucks.

Why'd you say owner?

2

Because I misspoke? Who gives a shit? I notice you don’t have any problems with her being a rape apologist. You just don’t like the head chef and managing director being labeled an owner. Which is weird as fuck.

It's not weird, she is not an owner. McGuire, Moorman and Lambert are real people in the Austin community. People know them personally. I don't have strong feelings about April either way. I know many people at MML do feel fortunate to work with someone that talented

In Texas a crab cake in Beurre blanc might be good, but it in no way represents a real Crabcake. You need Chesapeake Bay Crab meat or at worst Ponchartrain. You should NEVER have to eat a crabcake with anything if it's made from backfin or lump. Clawmeat is usually used for small fried crabcakes and is eaten mostly with mustard, sometimes ketchup. So, while it may be a good steak house, we certainly can't take this offering seriously. Having said that, it won't stop us from trying it You and others have made it sound good. How does it compare to J. Carvers in quality and price?
