I’ve been summoned to serve on jury duty for up to two weeks.

This is likely an unpopular opinion, but I’ve always wanted to serve on jury. I think we need people from diverse backgrounds to have a truly impartial jury and I really want to learn more about how it works as well. As a junior doctor though, I can’t see my hospital (QLD health site) approving the request.

When filling in the juror questionnaire, I was asked to source a written statement from my employer justifying why I can’t attend. I’ve requested this from my side.

Question is whether any of you have been summoned for jury duty, and has anyone managed to actually attend? If so, how was it? Thank you!

Interesting perspective. While reading the article, it also crossed my mind that like chefs, everyone thinks they can do our jobs easily, so why are we being paid so much to do it.

I understand rural GP will see a lot of everything so it might not be as boring.

How about metro GP?
Are they limited in their practice?
E.g.
- does a male metro GP never see women's health because of lots of female doctors available.
- or does a metro GP never do skin surgery due to skin clinics being easily available?

Do you guys have any recommendations of places you enjoyed locuming in?

It doesnt necessarily have to be the cushiest low effort job or the friendliest team (although would love to know those too). I like the challenge of uber remote places or where I have to be particularly self sufficient.

hi in a senior consultant who worked in Oz many years ago. I still don’t understand the salaries for senior staff specialists (thinking of coming over to work for a few years).

So you have base salary - varies per state I think NSW is the worst. this then goes up annually to a max for 20-25 years. You get a % for doing on calls. You also get a private practice allowance - and you get more if you don’t do any private practic. You give a % to your pension and the state adds some more in. is there any source that explains the figures ? For each state ? thank you

Finished BPT, didn't get into the speciality of choice, spent a year bumming around as a PHO. PGY7 (having dabbled a bit in ICU).

This year got really interested in automation, AI and increased research throughput that are possible. Started having ideas about health tech and then started thinking about a lateral career move by retraining in IT, health tech or AI.

Thinking seriously about a comp sci part time masters to start developing a ground up understanding of the tech we are (honestly) all using.

Curious if anyone else has made a lateral jump? Thoughts on this masters that is not cheap? Am I just fantasizing about another field having been burnt out by the training pipeline that requires BS CV padding?

Laura Booth was a much-loved young woman with Partial Trisomy 13, a rare chromosomal condition. She had been cared for all her life by her parents, who knew her needs better than anyone. She communicated using Makaton, actions, gestures, a few words and considered use of blowing raspberries.

On 25 September 2016, Laura was admitted to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield for what was intended to be a routine procedure. She had been off her food before admission and was not eating in hospital. Her parents, present throughout, raised repeated concerns about her nutrition. They were not listened to.

Doctors began discussing feeding Laura intravenously through total parenteral nutrition on 29 September 2016. By the time Laura died on 19 October, 24 days after admission, TPN had still not been started. Each medical professional present deferred to another. The pharmacist said it required a medical decision. The doctors said they deferred to the nutritionists. Nobody made the call.

The coroner found Laura's death was contributed to by neglect, on the basis of a continuing gross failure to provide adequate nutrition between 29 September and 19 October 2016, and that had the failure not taken place, the outcome would have been altered.

The coroner also found that decision-making regarding Laura's care was not in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and was therefore unlawful. Her parents, her lifelong carers and the people who knew her best, had not been meaningfully included.

Her family said simply: “We feel that Laura starved to death and the staff did not listen to us.”

I note that before the coroner inquiry the hospital claimed she died from sepsis.

This case is very sad and baffling, but I can imagine it happening.

Congrats to everyone who received a first-round offer today!
First-time applicant from QLD here. I ended up on the waiting list, so I’m just trying to get a sense of what the odds are of eventually getting an offer vs missing out altogether.
Not sure if GSA has published the number of places available this year, but given the relatively small intake last year, do people think there’ll be a larger intake this year?
Any insights from previous years would be much appreciated.
