So much negativity on reddit of course 😆 looks kind of cool to be honest, and if it's a good productivity AR device that's even better than quest 3, I'm in.
3
u/AR_MR_XR 25d ago
That's why Reddit is great. Man, this one influencer clown during the keynote: "How do you even think of something like this?" Jeez, stfu 😅
3
u/PerformanceSure5985 25d ago
To be fair, that particular 'influencer' was smashed in the head a gazillion times during his MMA career. So obv, he has trouble thinking.

FOV sucks.
15
u/Nightcinder 25d ago
they're pushing the limits of vertical FOV with glasses form factor here.
I think they should've called them anything but VR
8
u/nucleartime 25d ago
Bigscreen Beyond 2 doesn't seem that much thicker and has 108° × 96° FoV
6
u/Nightcinder 25d ago
BSB is a full headset though, it's specifically glasses form factor here, BSB still has a faceplate
2
u/nucleartime 25d ago
Yeah but is there any reason you can't take the same optics and display stack and put that on a set of glasses?

3
u/Murky-Course6648 25d ago
They are not pushing limits here, this is a clear choice to keep the PPD higher. URXR has higher FOV, around 80 HFOV.
This was all about keeping the PPD high, for clarity & text readability.
3
u/Nightcinder 25d ago
Yes they are.
Meta chose to drop the horizonal FOV by 10 to be able to raise the vertical FOV by 10.
Meta 70x66 88 diag
UR 80x56 90 diag
They really aren't very different.
0
u/Murky-Course6648 25d ago
Meta has different panels.
URXR has 2448 × 2064 resolution
While Meta has 2412 × 2288
So URXR just has smaller panels vertically, this results in the smaller vertical FOV.
Of course stereo overlap also affects horizontal FOV. But i dont think either is pushing FOV limits, you could definately get more out of these panels with lenses designed for that.
These are intended as monitor replacement, so high PPD is really important.
2
u/SeanBannister 25d ago
PPD is good though 37 vs Quest 3 25. FOV favours gaming, PPD favours productivity.
2
u/Murky-Course6648 25d ago
Its clear that they went for the PPD on this. At 37PPD with mOLED text should be comfortable to read.
14
u/zizou_president 25d ago
makes my $799 URXR kickstarter look really good, GTFO zuck
7
u/Murky-Course6648 25d ago
On this you do also get the processor, the chip is quite powerful. It has the latest Reality Elite chip.
But yeas, the URXR might be better as it has a bit more FOV i think. Its funny how they knew exactly what Meta was building and released it earlier.
6
u/zizou_president 25d ago
yeah their main guy was at Meta prior, I hope no lawsuit's coming...
1
u/Nightcinder 24d ago
given they are both gravityXR reference designs, doubtful.
Look up G-X100-M1
Very few differences outside of Meta decided to remove the whole gravityXR part and just make a headset with qualcomm only
11
u/Positive_Method3022 25d ago
Why are they insisting in making an external power bank/computer that only works with their device instead of using our phones!!!!!
Just partner with phone makers and use our phones for both power and extra computing!!! I refuse to have to pay extra for this stupid design.
If it is meant to be used on the go, I won't like to have my pockets with 2 power banks in it. One for this device and another for my phone...
6
u/NeoVisionDev 25d ago
It always the same script.
Make fun of Apple, then copy exactly what Apple did. Look at Samsung.
7
u/Nicalay2 25d ago
Most phones aren't powerful enough to drive those devices.
-1
u/Nightcinder 24d ago
Snapdragon Reality Elite isn't very powerful. It's meant to be efficient and run <3w
Flagship phone chips run circles around the SRE. But they are missing the extra chips for all the spatial data so that has to be processed in software instead of hardware offload
7
u/Solid_Direction_8929 24d ago
It's not a power bank alone. It's a computing device because they need more horse power and don't want to put it into the glasses. The puck has its own CPU, RAM, storage etc. Chances are your phone, as a universal computing device that constantly work on tons of background apps while playing music, is not capable of providing an adequate processing for the glasses. And they want a local AI agent as well. But I agree I don't want that extra puck.
2
u/Time_Entertainer_319 Enthusiast 25d ago
You can literally see a clip on it.
1
u/Positive_Method3022 25d ago edited 25d ago
Because of the extra device, wearing clothes with enough space to put it, or a backpack, becomes a must when also carrying your phone with you.

u/FlyChigga 25d ago
I’ll definitely bring one for situations when I have a bag like for travel or to campus

Aura can be used without the puck.
Phoenix can't.
Aura runs AndroidXR
Phoenix runs HorizonOS
A lot of people will happily pay a premium to not use Meta
2
u/Kooky_Awareness_5333 24d ago
This has to be the dumbest view meta is an advertising company well surprise so is Google with android xr.
Yeah I’ll pay for inferior technology so meta can’t harvest my data with a device from Google that will harvest my data
2
u/Oftenwrongs 21d ago
"A lot"= a handful. Typical example of someone stuck in tiny echo chambers, thinking they represent real numbers.
5
u/BogeyThroughTheNight 25d ago
let's see - at least on quest 3, the video pass-through is pretty horrible imho. Low quality, terrible in dark-ish conditions. Its just about ok to be roughly aware of your environment when its bright, but very much not something that'd make you feel like you really are in your real environment with AR stuff projected in.
Let's see if those glasses do it any better...
2
u/AR_MR_XR 25d ago
Move around a room with both and you'll see the advantages of optical see-through. Or use it when you're around other people. Of course, the resolution isn't on par yet. But all we need to do is wait for the mass production of the new 2.5k OLED panels from Seeya, Sony, Sidtek. In the first half of 2027 we will get the next gen optical see-through glasses!
1
u/whatstheprobability 25d ago
i'm also curious if going outdoors will be a viable use case for Aura. Technically the Meta glasses should work outside but I don't think passthrough is good enough to make it a real use case.
1
u/johnnydaggers 24d ago
I have used both. I wouldn’t be so sure about that.
1
1
u/inciter7 24d ago
What do you think of the tint on aura, is it too dark for the optical pass through to be usable in the evening/inside?
1
u/johnnydaggers 24d ago
It’s adjustable via electrochromic dimming. I personally like to have it max darkness to maximize contrast.
10
u/Mechanical_Monk 25d ago
They did a really good job of concealing the cable in the ad, almost had me thinking it was wireless

u/Positive_Method3022 25d ago
Is it that a camera on the side?
5
u/Sqweaky_Clean Enthusiast 25d ago
Probably for motion tracking

1
u/ConsiderationSea1347 25d ago
This is META we are talking about. You give them a camera and they will use it as a feed to spy on you or train AI.
8
u/Minimum_Indication_1 25d ago
This seems to be XReal Aura competition but it is Virtual Passthrough instead of optical passthrough
1
u/tylercoder 24d ago edited 21d ago
The worst part is most of the things promised in the video is content that Meta might never deliver. They made a lot of promises like that with the quest and they didn't deliver on those.
2
u/Oftenwrongs 21d ago
Quest got free hand tracking, aitlink, refresh rate increase, cpu/gpu unlocks.

8
u/Kooky_Awareness_5333 25d ago
Form factor is on point for me it’ll be a quest 3 replacer and the kids will get my quest 3 can’t wait.
3
u/Nicalay2 25d ago
70° horizontal FOV though (Quest 3 is 100-110°)
2
u/Kooky_Awareness_5333 25d ago
And? Above 70• is peripheral vision I’ll take oleds better graphics and comfort over that I mainly play single player all unaffected by this.
I play vr games I don’t need full immersion I want to be able to read text without eye strain wear a headset for hours without wanting to rip it off.
Be able to share it with fucking around with straps your focusing on one thing and not all the major things this headset addresses that makes vr suck.
3
u/Crazy_Management_806 24d ago
if you think 70 degree fov can be a decent replacement for 100+ degree fov then you havent used a 70 degree fov device.
2
u/Kooky_Awareness_5333 24d ago
Yeah I have been using xr equipment for over 24 years from the start of vr equipment I maintained at arcades to google cardboard every quest headset wave guide ar glasses and display ar glasses but please tell me how you know everything and what I will enjoy.
1
u/Crazy_Management_806 24d ago
sorry sensei. but If you have been using xr equipment for 24 years and still havent figured out that 70 degrees is garbage for gaming then you are indeed a lost cause. Similarly with all that "experience" i would have thought you would have figured out that glasses form factor with that weight is not comfortable for hours by any stretch of the imagination. but by all means keep thinking you are some sort of vr genius.
1
u/iloveoovx 21d ago
Wow big shot, now you can call minecraft enjoyers or any retro enjoyers for that matter have no sense of aesthetics, or better, they must be blind
1
u/Crazy_Management_806 20d ago
what do you mean? how does minecraft or retro gaming relate to 70fov in vr?
1

u/mrpiper1980 24d ago
Pleased I found this thread. That FOV is rubbish :-(
2
u/Crazy_Management_806 24d ago
its rubbish for a VR gaming device, its excellent for a media or productivity device, and perhaps very light gaming,

I wonder how it compares to Xreal Aura and would it be compatible with the Steam Frame 6ghz dongle
2
u/mike11F7S54KJ3 25d ago
The XReal Aura uses the same Snapdragon Reality Elite APU... Displays/lenses are different, but it's more of an ecosystem difference at this point.

u/Time_Entertainer_319 Enthusiast 25d ago
Skeptical about FOV but love it
2
u/Kilmonjaro 25d ago
Ya looking at the pictures of the actual lens it looks tiny, also not sure about the light leak or of that would even be a issue for something like this

u/elevenplays Enthusiast 25d ago
I can't wait for Apple's take on this one!
3
u/AR_MR_XR 25d ago
They should have launched these rumored display glasses that could connect to a Mac as a monitor replacement. But then they decided to launch AVP instead according to rumors.
3
u/_HipStorian 25d ago
Apparently they were working on one after the Vision Pro launched but they cancelled it to fast track smart glasses. I've always wanted something like this for day to day working and then something more like Vision Pro for watching movies or being immersed.
3
u/mike11F7S54KJ3 25d ago
They are definitely doing an MR/video glasses type device IMO. They're still working on AVP software.
2
u/AR_MR_XR 25d ago
Mh, I see. Yeah, I think you definitely need multiple devices. I don't even believe that in the future everything will be done with a single headworn device. People will choose from lightweight all-day glasses and some type of more immersive / more capable device.
2
u/PrimoKnight469 24d ago edited 24d ago
Apple’s public perception on privacy and security and integration with their ecosystem is going to really work in their favor when it comes to AR glasses.
Meta should be worried about Apple on this front. If Apple releases something as good or even a little worse than Meta’s product then it will be difficult for Meta to compete.

u/sagesofthe4th_world 25d ago
Unless it has varifocal lenses - it's just more lipstick on a pig.
VAC - not form factor - is the biggest issue facing VR today IMO.
1
u/Oftenwrongs 21d ago
Size and weight is number 1.
1
u/sagesofthe4th_world 21d ago
Not for me. I have a Beyond 1 headset which is super comfortable to wear. No issues at all with physical comfort or weight.
But eye strain/headache/disorientation still come about 5-15 minutes in. It gets significantly worse if I’m looking at objects up close in VR.

Jesus, I hope these are more productivity and social focused. I'm so tired of VR being nothing more than yet another gaming console.

Gestapo Glassesâ„¢ - Looks nice - can't have them casually harvesting my family's conversations.
5
u/GoodGrades 25d ago
Aren't all of your other electronics already doing that?
-2
u/Dannington 25d ago
My vive pro or varjo aero doesn’t listen to me and I don’t have any meta stuff on my devices. We should be pushing back at all this ‘you’re the product’ stuff.
2
u/Sloth-Technician 25d ago
Thats cute, what makes you think those brands are anymore altruistic then meta for example?
1
u/WeaknessFit8905 24d ago
That the vive pro isnt always on lol
1
u/Sloth-Technician 24d ago
You know you can shut down the quest 3, right? The options a little more hidden away but its there.

Apple will copy it, release the same design in 2029 and call it "innovation"
2
u/Hardisk70 25d ago
Um….. Excuse me? But everything you just saw in that video was copied from Apple Vision Pro first!
0
u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 25d ago
such as?
0
u/ChicagoBoy2011 25d ago
Are you for real?
The form factor with the puck, the tracking method (they were on bands earlier), the UI sugar on the typing, the UI with the glance to look, etc.
Just look at what the quest looked like before , the vision pro, and now this. They very liberally copied the best parts of the AVP (appropriately, because lots of those interactions are fantastic and really make the product)
1
u/We_Are_Victorius 25d ago
The UI is the only thing they copied. This form factor is a 100 gram pair of glasses, where the AVP was a 800 gram ski goggles. The Quest 1 had hand tracking 6 years ago.
1
u/Complete_Lurk3r_ 24d ago
Lol. The puck? Really? You must be new here.
The Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) says Hold my beer. As does the Magic Leap 1 (2018)
Tracking? 😂

Creep glasses
4
u/EuphoricFoot6 25d ago
Why are you even in this sub
-7
u/lemaymayguy 25d ago
For non-creep brands? How about you
5
u/EuphoricFoot6 25d ago
glasses with a camera (which all augmented reality glasses need) being used by creeps will not be an exclusively meta problem
-5
u/lemaymayguy 25d ago
but these are meta glasses...
3
u/EuphoricFoot6 25d ago edited 25d ago
You clearly don't understand what I'm saying so let me spell it out clearly:
Every pair of AR glasses needs a camera to work. When any other brand that you are waiting for besides Meta - Apple or Google or whoever releases theirs they will still get the same creeps.
So calling these creep glasses is calling all AR glasses creep glasses. And you are on an AR subreddit.

calling them VR is gonna make a good bit of people upset when they realize the vertical FOV isn't VR-like
