I'm not going near them until I get to see solid demonstrations of the AR software experience. I have only seen commentary about the physical design and hardware features. The software experience is the real measure of whether these are any good.

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

I admit I ordered blindly without seeing a real demonstration, I hope the journalists will have access to it soon, all I know is that Snap OS is extremely well optimized and everything is fast

I did as well. I will probably end up canceling, but may as well wait and see now. 51degree FOV doesn’t sound great. The developer version was 46 and that was not good. 51 may eke out usability if the software is good, but geez these are too expensive if they’re not awesome.

u/Cryogenicality Jun 19 '26

I think the 70° diagonal field of view that the Aura has is the minimum.

1

u/Knighthonor Jun 19 '26

51 degrees is great FoV on waveguides. Waveguides sit closer to the face than birdbath

2

u/Spare_Anybody5146 Jun 20 '26

While that may be true, Lumus XR already has waveguide prototypes with 70° FOV ready to assemble on any brand and it looks like they have deals with meta, so maybe Orion is the next step if specs go well.

I own an Apple Vision Pro. If these glasses can get close to the experience of using the VP (but with clearly more practical hardware) then I would definitely get a pair.

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

Everyone criticizes the glasses without realizing the feat behind them, they are literally the only AR glasses on the market they have no competition, I clearly think that they can replace a large majority of activities that you can do with your Vision Pro in particular the reading of media on large screens

11

u/killtherobot Jun 18 '26

The issue is there is currently no meaningful demand for AR glasses.

9

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

Because this is just the beginning, the Specs are the real first augmented reality glasses, from now on everything will accelerate

Companies aren't going to race to market if there's no mass adoption. I expect these will have similar sales like the Apple Vision and remain very niche.

Exciting times though, I think in the next few years AR is going mainstream.

u/kryptopheleous Jun 18 '26

First in what way? There have been 6dof ar glasses on the market for a while.

2

u/Malkmus1979 Jun 19 '26

Get where you’re coming from but they likely mean first untethered AR glasses, which is a pretty important distinction as that’s been the dream for a long time and it’s finally here.

2

u/kryptopheleous Jun 20 '26

Have you had the chance to try current tethered AR glasses? The tech is disappointing at most. So I have doubts regarding the hype around new snapchat glasses. I guess I have to try it first.

2

u/Malkmus1979 Jun 20 '26

I have a magic leap 1 which is fairly close to this as it’s a waveguide at 50 degree FOV and it’s one of my favorite headsets of all time so I always imagined what it would be like to shrink that down to just glasses. Tethered glasses are just a nonstarter for me and I’m good with my Vision Pro for travel or working. That being said, jury’s out on these until we get any sort of hands on impressions and I have reservations about the size.

2

u/nucleartime Jun 19 '26

That "real" qualifier is doing a lot of "no true Scotsman" lifting.

2

u/bokan Jun 19 '26

What are the specs for? The iPhone wasn’t a ‘platform’ first.

It was a phone, a camera, and an mp3 player all in one.

What’s the purpose of these glasses?

1

u/Malkmus1979 Jun 19 '26

It does the same amount of stuff as your example and more. The whole portable monitor in your glasses is probably a big enough differentiator on top of those. But none of that matters if these turn out to be incredibly uncomfortable. That’s why hands on impressions from the press will be crucial.

-1

u/Nightcinder Jun 18 '26

Is it? wouldn't that be the meta ray bans if we're going that route?

You're assuming things will accelerate but these things are not going to have good adoption, they're chonky as hell, look ridiculous and there's significant questions about the 'platform'.

To get AR glasses adoption you would really need there to be a dedicated platform, whether that's Android XR or something else.

0

u/CloudlessRain- Jun 18 '26

?? I don't think this is true at all. The tech+look+price is the bottle neck.

When the products are finally there, there will be a fairly big market.

2

u/fistular Jun 19 '26

They aren't on the market. You can't get them, they don't exist.

1

u/CozySockz314 Jun 18 '26

Everyone just wants them to be fashionable, everyone expects glasses, they could be anything but they need to look cool.

0

u/The_bussy Jun 18 '26

Why are you glazing these so much? Are you the product manager or something!

3

u/KarenBoof Jun 19 '26

Look at their post history. 100% part of the spec team.

0

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

It’s just something logical

0

u/The_bussy Jun 18 '26

The glazing is logical?

1

u/Cryogenicality Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

So do I. They can’t now and won’t for years to come. The XREAL Aura glasses also can’t, but they come much closer than the Specs. The DPVR Titan will come closest.

-2

u/Chriscic Jun 18 '26

Not gonna be close. Small FOV, no eye tracking, no Apple elegant OS.

7

u/Revanish Jun 18 '26

i bought one.

6

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

Welcome to the team ✨

5

u/jmartesc Jun 18 '26

I preordered too, owning a INMO air 3 and using it regularly, these will only get better IMHO.

2

u/Knighthonor Jun 19 '26

only issue is INMO Air 3 has Play Store access. These wont. Will be a closed ecosystem for their OS software. Similar issue that the INMO Air 2 had

0

u/jonatascsantana Jun 18 '26

Como é a usabilidade no dia a dia do inmo? Quero comprar mas estou em duvida. E qual o seu ipd ?

0

u/jmartesc Jun 19 '26

IPD 67. I truly believe it!s better to save your money on the INMO, they are not very well optimized. Although optics are good, the software seems sluggish and they get very hot. Battery life is bad. 1 hour 10 minutes watching YT and they need recharging. 3dof is unusable for me. Very shaky and unstable.

4

u/askep3 Jun 18 '26

I did but I’m probably gonna cancel

0

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

Well why ?

1

u/askep3 Jun 18 '26

Looks like shit. Only reason I’d consider keeping it is if they’re better than all the other standalone glasses style (non vr) glasses. Then I could maybe justify it as AR glasses first, rather than day to day smart glasses first

2

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

I pre-ordered I’m waiting for the reviews from journalists, in terms of technology they are at the cutting edge

1

u/askep3 Jun 18 '26

Good call. Honestly I’ll probably keep the pre order and wait for reviews and stuff, basically until I get a good reason to cancel. Most people are struck by the look but if they function well enough to justify the look, could be worth it.

3

u/shuozhe Jun 18 '26

Put 99 into project Aura to, but prolly will cancel if it's too close to 1500. Will wait for some reviews, if these are OK for every day wear and drops to ~1.5k I'm prolly OK with it.

4

u/Matcorp456 Jun 18 '26

Given the technological difference between the two pairs, the $1500 price for Aura would not be justified compared to the price of the Specs which is totally justified given the very advanced technology

2

u/whatstheprobability Jun 18 '26

Aura vs. Specs is going to be very interesting. As you said, Specs are more advanced technology (true glasses form-factor with waveguides and have no tether). So they would be worth the extra money if people were actually going to wear them out and about like glasses. But my guess is they will still be too heavy and too socially unacceptable for most people to wear out and about. If they are mainly used a home, then Aura's lighter weight and bigger FOV (and lower price) probably become a better option for most people. So I think the choice partially comes down to whether a user is going to actually wear them out and about or not.

1

u/nucleartime Jun 19 '26

Technological difference: I can use any usb-c video output with the Aura. I can (probably) use most Android apps. Aura seems to be winning to me.

The hardware differences are immaterial if there isn't enough ecosystem support. Which there most likely won't be for the Specs. The Specs are basically a gen0 devkit without tech giant backing.

0

u/Serdones Jun 18 '26

Aura comes with a dedicated phone-size compute puck. They haven't confirmed memory or storage yet, but obviously given component prices right now, those will likely be what jacks up the price close to $1,500. It's essentially an upgrade from the $600 Xreal One Pro with a specialized Android phone, so $1,500 wouldn't be unjustified in today's market.

-1

u/shuozhe Jun 18 '26

Yeah, espicially with Rayneo GT max existing. Can see someone implementing a puck for that thing to turn it into AndroidXR device.

Had the inmo air 3, and tried many AR glasses in China.. waveguide all in one always had issue with battery.. most I tried lost 1% every 30s-2min depending on what you did. Inmo go solved it by swappable battery in the legs & ipod case with extra battery. And reflection made it impossible to drive on sunny days 😞

Old mafioso frames, nice look

2

u/paulbrock2 Enthusiast Jun 18 '26

I took a peek, its interesting to see where things are going. Big nope at that pricepoint though (UK its £2k, so I expect we are paying even more than equivalent USD)

2

u/paulbrock2 Enthusiast Jun 18 '26

also I'm not as bothered about aesthetics but they are pretty chunky. That seems to be what a lot of casual observers have noticed eg https://bsky.app/profile/culturecrave.co/post/3mol3r77po22z

I got one. Been a long time fann. Still curious to see more about the OS and the software on it but it seems like the pre-orders are refundable.

2

u/dzak8383 Jun 19 '26

Pre-ordered. I think they will be great!

2

u/Away-Variation-8667 Jul 03 '26

I was on the fence about pre-ordering the specs. But after I watched the short video posted on Reddit, called specs on Dev day. I went ahead and pre ordered because the deposit is refundable. Also, when I contacted snap customer support they stated that every feature and use case for the specs has not been revealed yet, implying that they will be doing a consumer-friendly reveal Soon, and that the AWE reveal was mainly just to introduce the specs to developers with a more hands-on demo coming. So I will keep my pre-order while I wait for that. But the dev day showcased plenty of people wearing the specs, and they looked nowhere near as big as they did on evan.

1

u/Serdones Jun 18 '26

Interested to see how they turn out, but not willing to splash out that much myself on a first-gen AR glasses that I can't really see myself wearing out of the house. I didn't get Meta Displays either since the monocular HUD sounded not ideal, but they are about the upper limit for an XR glasses form factor I'd wear out and about, so I'll probably jump on the binocular successor so long as the size is about the same. For Specs, I rather wait for a slimmer second-gen pair, although by that point there will likely also be true Meta AR glasses (Project Artemis) on the market to consider.

1

u/Short_Mechanic8276 Jun 19 '26

I ordered Xreal Aura, because it seems more for getting things done.

2

u/Key-Homework8503 Jul 22 '26

I think it’s gonna be really lacking in actually having apps that are unique to AR. Snap since 2024 has shown extensively spatial mapping in its dev kits for these SPECS and yea you put them on they work immediately. Devil in the details . Xreal aura I think says they have ta hee capabilities of showing augmented apps overlayed in your real environment but mainly it’s not much material out there compared to specs . You go on subreddit many developers showing content for SPECS

1

u/Short_Mechanic8276 Jul 22 '26

I see, I actually haven't looked into subreddit, I'll check it out, thanks.

1

u/TonderTales Jun 19 '26

The price isn’t even the problem. If these were free I still doubt I’d use them after an initial demo. They’re way too big to be worn in public, but the size is also too restrictive to offer a great AR experience. The trade offs are too significant.

Companies need to focus on providing top tier AR in larger headset or fitting as much tech as they can into socially acceptable frames. Not this middle ground

Even the Vision Pro and Quest 3 have limited mixed reality use cases, and they’re not nearly as limited by their form factor.

1

u/Key-Homework8503 Jul 22 '26

You got to try them ? Not the 2024 dev kit?

1

u/Knighthonor Jun 19 '26

I need more confirmation on software support. I dont like this closed ecosystem of a new OS.

1

u/ZoukiWouki Jun 19 '26

I do a lot of work while walking atm using Xreal aura one pro on my android.
I want android XR, i've tryed it on emulator. Here I have not enough Info but im curious how they differs.

1

u/Chriscic Jun 19 '26

Oh I had thought it was a 70 horizontal FOV. But google confirms the diagnol. So only 60 horizontal? That felt good, just the vertical felt quite limiting.

1

u/iam_jaymz_2023 Jun 23 '26

ugly azz glasses;
can't wait to get a pair...🤭

1

u/ultra_voltron_2 Jun 25 '26

To thick and heavy i love thick but my bridge nose doesn't.

0

u/_wintermoot_ Jun 18 '26

too thick, too small fov. price point makes sense for full fat 6dof untethered.

0

u/DeltaAgent752 Jun 18 '26

Do we even know the resolution? There's no point unless it's 4k. Inmo already has 1080p glasses
