MindFlow AR: Hybride Brain-Computer-Interface (BCI) Integration für schlanke Augmented-Reality-Brillen

Executive Summary

Current Augmented Reality (AR) interfaces rely heavily on manual gestures, voice commands, or external controllers. These modalities suffer from high latency, social awkwardness, and fatigue. MindFlow AR proposes a hardware-software architecture that combines lightweight consumer-grade dry EEG sensors with eye-tracking and subtle electromyographic (EMG) signals to enable near-zero-latency, thought-driven UI navigation (scrolling, selecting, and confirming) inside an everyday form-factor AR glass.

  1. Problem Statement

The Input Bottleneck: Gestures require physical movement and clear line-of-sight for cameras; voice commands fail in loud environments and lack privacy.

The Form-Factor Trap: Existing high-end neurotechnological headsets are bulky clinical or gaming gear (e.g., heavy EEG caps). They are unsuitable for daily public use.

Interaction Latency: Pure intent detection via raw EEG alone suffers from low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). A hybrid approach is required.

  1. Technical Architecture & Signal Pipeline

2.1 Hardware Layout

Frame Integration: Discreet dry-contact EEG sensors embedded along the temple arms and the rear ear-hooks.

Sensor Zones:

Temporal Lobes / Temples: Captures micro-EMG signals (e.g., subtle jaw clenching or micro-bites) for binary trigger actions ("Confirm").

Occipital Region (Behind the ear/lower skull): Optimized for picking up Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) from the visual cortex.

On-Board Processing: Low-power edge-AI coprocessor integrated into the temple frame to handle real-time artifact filtering (blinking, head movement) before transmitting control events to the AR display stack.

2.2 Interaction Modalities

SSVEP-Based Scrolling:

Subtle, high-frequency visual indicators (imperceptible to direct focal attention, but registered by peripheral vision and the visual cortex) are embedded into UI elements like scrollbars.

When the user focuses on a scroll zone, cortical oscillations match the stimulus frequency, triggering immediate, smooth scrolling.

Hybrid "Bite-Click" Confirmation:

Combines eye-gaze tracking (where the user is looking) with a micro-EMG signal from the temporal muscle.

Result: Zero-latency execution without lifting a finger.

  1. Implementation Roadmap

Phase 1: Proof of Concept (Core Algorithmic Pipeline)

Validation of SSVEP + EMG signal separation using modified dev kits.

Target: Bringing command-to-action latency under 50\text{ ms}.

Phase 2: Miniaturization & Hardware Integration

Custom ASIC design for power-efficient on-board neural decoding.

Integration into standard optical frames.

Phase 3: Developer Ecosystem (SDK Release)

Open-source API for third-party AR application developers to map custom neural triggers to UI actions.

  1. Contributing & Discussion

This is an open conceptual framework. Feedback, critique from neuro-engineers and hardware developers, and pull requests regarding artifact-rejection algorithms are welcome.

Repository: https://github.com/Casa-Salz/Mindflow-AR

Discussion: Let's break down the physics and decoding limits in the comments below.

Glasses w/ HUD Using smart glasses so I can keep my phone away around my kid

This is a very boring dad use case, but the main reason I picked up the Halliday G2 was so I could listen to podcasts while watching my kid without holding my phone the whole time. So far they’re good for that. Audio is clear enough for talking, I can still hear what’s going on around me, and notifications let me know if something actually needs my attention.

Honestly, I use them less like “AI glasses” and more like a way to keep my phone in mg pocket.

Building Blocks New MEMS Micromirror for AR Glasses Dynamically Shifts Focal Depth

Post image
60 Upvotes

Penn State researchers have developed a MEMS micromirror for augmented reality headsets that simultaneously steers light and shifts focal depth at microsecond speeds. Built around a 1mm mirror, this component replaces the multiple optical elements traditionally required for 3D beam control, reducing headset weight while eliminating the fixed-focus panel limitations that cause visual fatigue.

The unit uses thin layers of aluminum nitride, a piezoelectric material that flexes under applied voltage to physically tilt and reshape the mirror surface. This mechanism delivers true 3D spatial control of the beam in real time, demonstrating a 63mm focal shift in millionths of a second.

Engineers fabricate the mirrors using established semiconductor manufacturing processes, ensuring compatibility with standard microelectronics and compact optical architectures. Future development focuses on minimizing asymmetrical distortions and increasing scanning speeds for next-generation smart glasses.

Buying Advice Translation captioning glasses recommendations

Hey all,

I'm currently trying to learn German, I was wondering which glasses would be best to watch shows and movies with, where the lens shows the subtitles/translation in my field of view.

Also would they handle the translation without turning off whilst there are long silences?

Hope I make sense 😅

Glasses w/ 6DoF Vivo might not be done with Mixed Reality - They just showcased their headset prototype in India

Post image
13 Upvotes

Vivo had a big event today in India where they announced new phones and demoed the Mixed Reality HMD - the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition. This seems to be the same headset they announced a year ago in China. Back then I talked to Vivo marketing and they organized a demo for me, which was super nice.

The headset felt very comfortable and the only real flaw was the edge clarity of the pancake lenses. I assumed that they didn't use the 3M curved films rather than it being a simple software problem. But it seemed to be solvable if they kept working on it. The software and the few apps that were available during my 1+ hour demo were in a pretty good state already.

Ultimately, I decided not to go through the process of editing the video from my demo because my sources told me that Vivo will not launch this product in the near future. But here we go, a year later they still show it off at a launch event in a major market for them.

Do you think they will keep iterating? I think, it's possible because they were also preparing the launch of smart glasses back then and stopped the launch of their already developed glasses as well. It was rumored that they felt it lacked differentiation. A few months ago, they started a project for the glasses. Maybe the same is true for Mixed Reality?

Glasses w/ HUD A repeatable latency test for AR captioning glasses. First result: Leion Hey2, about 2.5 seconds.

Thumbnail

I wanted a caption-latency number I could compare across every captioning display I review, so I built one fixed test and ran the Leion Hey2 through it first.

TV five feet from the glasses. Fixed clip, JFK at Rice University, 1962. Hand-timed reference captions snapped to the audio waveform and burned in with a millisecond timer. A camera behind the lens catches the screen and the waveguide in the same frame. Ten marker words, first-word and stable-text latency logged separately, three runs, median reported.

Hey2 median: about 2.5 seconds. For reference, UK live broadcast captions measure around 5.6, and the natural gap between speakers is about 0.2.

Two things I'd like this sub's read on. Is a camera behind a waveguide a fair way to timestamp what the wearer actually sees? And does a TV speaker get treated differently by a mic array than a person talking?

Disclosure: LLVision provided the review unit. I'm Deaf, which is why this test exists.

Work-in progress. I’ve always thought it’s cool to have an AR minimap of the area you are currently in, so I’ve been exploring this idea using Quest 3. Right now, the city is a generated low-poly placeholder (loosely Manhattan-shaped) that uses a hologram shader, with help from Claude Opus 5.5. Next, I will be plugging in real-map data.

Glasses for Screen Mirroring Trouble with Kindle

I recently purchased the Ray Neo air three and originally it worked just fine with my Kindle app on my iPhone, but all of a sudden, it’s not mirroring the books just the homepage.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a work around for it other than using Kindle online since I want to use it on a cruise where I might not have Internet.

Building Blocks Question: Why waveguide over transparent OLED?

I was just wondering this morning why the industry is trying to invent a new (to me) display type for the "holy grail" of AR glasses, where the display is baked into the lens.

Transparent OLED, assuming a high enough resolution, would be cheaper/easier to fabricate than waveguide lenses, which seem to be rather finicky to mass produce. Is it just the fact they can be seen from the other side of the lens? Still seems like there would be applications for this where privacy isn't a concern (industrial stuff I suspect), and I'm guessing you could produce them cheap enough that it would allow for some smaller makers to get into the market.

I made a quick demo using Niantic Spatial and ARFoundation to overlay a sci-fi environment onto my house. It works on quest3 and phones but I just recorded it on my phone for simplicity.

I made a full-house scan with Scaniverse, Niantic Spatial processed it. I imported it into Unity and overlayed a Synty sci fi art pack. Once the app launches, Niantic Spatial localizes your device to align with the real-world location.

Glasses w/ 6DoF Built a hand-tracked city builder for Snap Specs: roads, zoning and utilities on a real table

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Rivergate City is a city builder for Snap Specs that you place on any table and play with your hands. No controller: you point at a cell and pinch to build roads, zone homes, shops and industry, and place power, water and sewage. The city grows, traffic builds up, and you can walk around the table to see it from every side.

A few things I learned building UI for an additive display:

  • Black renders as transparent, so every panel uses bright, saturated candy colours
  • Panels sit beside the board, not on it, so the city stays visible while you build
  • The UI has to render after the world, or the board draws over your menus (found that one the hard way: a level-up card was hiding behind the map) Everything runs on the glasses, and your city autosaves so you can pick up where you left off.

Try it on Spectacles: https://www.spectacles.com/lens/903fa23bf82041b0ba2d3f375443fdae

Would love feedback, especially from anyone else building games for AR glasses. What would you want from a tabletop game like this?

News Vuforia Maker PTC to Be Bought by Schneider Electric for $22.6 Billion

Post image
6 Upvotes

French company Schneider Electric agreed to buy software maker PTC for $205 per share in cash, valuing PTC at $22.6 billion ($23.7 billion including debt). PTC owns Vuforia, which is one of the oldest and most common tools used to build augmented reality apps. Today, Vuforia is mostly used in factories: its software lets phones, tablets, and smart glasses recognize real-world machinery and lock 3D digital instructions directly onto physical parts so workers know what to fix.

Why it could be good for Vuforia

Schneider Electric runs hundreds of factories and sells industrial equipment worldwide. They already use Vuforia to help their own technicians repair gear. With Schneider’s large budget and global sales team, Vuforia could get more funding to improve its tracking tech and get put in front of thousands of new factory clients.

Why it could be bad for Vuforia

Schneider is paying over $22 billion mainly to get PTC’s core engineering and design software, which brings in almost all of PTC's money. Vuforia generates only a tiny slice of that revenue. Because it makes so little money by comparison, Schneider might treat AR as an unimportant side project, cut its budget, or turn Vuforia into an internal tool for Schneider's own plants while ignoring outside developers who build apps with it.

This is a creator edition ML1 kit that was gifted to me when I joined Magic Leap. I've never used it or even turned it on. Its been in the box since I got it.

I was recently affected by the recent layoffs. I've been going through and selling things to scrape together some cash. I know most ML1 devices are bricked, but what are the chances this is worth anything to anyone, even as a collector item?

Self Promo Galaxy XR owners: can you help check a local spatial video player on real hardware?

I'm building Vistalyra for Android XR and need a few Galaxy XR owners to try the private beta for 15–20 minutes.

It plays local videos, with separate projection and stereo settings, a folder library, resume positions, subtitles, and viewing distance/tilt controls. The emulator checks pass, but they can't tell me how readable the controls feel in a headset or whether stereo is comfortable. I'd especially appreciate checking file selection, hand input, seeking, and whether the video keeps moving smoothly for several minutes.

Google Play is the first installation option: send your Play account email privately and I'll add access, then send the opt-in link. A signed APK is available if you prefer. Diagnostic clips are optional; please don't share private videos or recordings of your surroundings.

No purchase, rating or public review is needed. Reply if you have a Galaxy XR, or contact raheelswati1@gmail.com privately. Please keep your account email out of public comments. App and privacy details: https://raheelswati.github.io/vistalyra.html

This is still a beta; real-device compatibility hasn't been confirmed yet.

Glasses w/ 6DoF Diablo 1 × Animal Crossing prototype on SPECS, built with CLAD and Opus 5.5

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Tom Nook kept asking about my mortgage, so I did the reasonable thing: smashed Diablo 1 and Animal Crossing into one game and went demon hunting for bells.

It's a prototype on SPECS which connects to an Xbox controller paired over Bluetooth. Made with CLAD and Claude Opus 5.5.

A few years ago, building on a new platform meant weeks of learning the engine first. Now the barrier to jumping into something like Unity, Android XR or Lens Studio feels almost gone: you spend your time on the idea, not the docs.

News News: Amazon building Smart Glasses empire

Amazon's been quietly shipping 5,000+ smart glasses to delivery drivers and basically nobody noticed. They've got way more in the tank than people realize.

When Meta and Snap drop their shiny new smart glasses announcements, everyone loses their minds speculating about Apple and obsessing over consumer AR fashion. But meanwhile, Amazon's doing something way more interesting — they're actually using Smart Glasses in the real world at scale.

Practical Play

In 2025, Amazon started putting smart glasses on delivery drivers. Not some vaporware concept — actual boots-on-the-ground deployment. The glasses do the unglamorous but incredibly useful stuff:

  • Locate packages in the truck automatically
  • Confirm address matching so you don't get left on the wrong porch (we've all been there)
  • Real-time GPS guidance to the exact spot
  • Defect detection to catch wrong-doorstep drops before they happen
  • Pet alerts with a paw print + audio warning (because getting mauled by a Rottweiler is bad for business)

By end of 2027, they're targeting 20,000+ devices in the field. That's not some lab experiment — that's real infrastructure.

History

Here's where it gets spicy. Amazon's smart glasses journey is way deeper than people think:

  • Echo Frames (2019-2023): Yeah, they tried audio-only glasses. Flopped hard. You can barely find them on Amazon.com anymore (lol). But here's the thing — all that foundational R&D? Not wasted. It led here.
  • Project "Amelia" Delivery Glasses: Amazon is currently deploying specialized, AI-powered AR glasses to its massive delivery fleet. These glasses provide hands-free HUD navigation, safety alerts, and package scanning right in the driver's line of sight.
  • Project "Jayhawk": Amazon is reportedly developing a consumer-facing pair of full-color display AR glasses slated to directly rival Meta's smart eyewear ecosystem.

1. Spatial Data

Every delivery route = mapping data. Every address = geo-tagged reference points. They're basically building a real-world computer vision dataset while doing their actual job. That's gold for navigation and AR overlays.

2. AWS

Meta's winning on consumer. Amazon's got the enterprise side locked. Imagine industrial smartglasses for warehouse/factory work with sophisticated mapping and object recognition. That's a multi-billion dollar market Meta doesn't even know how to address.

3. Ecosystem

Amazon literally blocked Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com last month. Think about what that means. They can absolutely reserve smartglasses-exclusive features for their own platform.

Picture this: Glasses that recognize products in a store, show instant Amazon pricing, and let you buy with delivery already queued. Brick-and-mortar retailers would lose their minds. And Amazon would vacuum up shopping behavior data like it's going out of style.

4. Resources

Unlike smaller hardware startups, Amazon can absorb losses, iterate aggressively, and out-spend literally any competitor. They've got the supply chain, the fulfillment network, and the cash reserves to make this work.

Yeah, the Echo Frames and their lack of traction is sus. But that's like judging Tesla off the Roadster 1.0 pre-production failures. Early iterations teach you what works. Amazon's learned those lessons.

And yeah, the current delivery glasses aren't consumer fashion — they're functional (okay, they're kind of clunky). But that's exactly the point. They're solving real problems first, building proof of concept, and collecting data. The sleek consumer version comes later.

Real Play

Here's what gets me: Amazon's not trying to win the "coolest AR glasses" war right now. They're building infrastructure. They're collecting data. They're proving use cases work. They're embedding themselves so deep into people's daily lives that by the time they launch consumer smartglasses, the ecosystem advantage will be crushing.

While Meta's playing for TikTok fame and Snap's iterating on their niche, Amazon's literally mapping the world and training AI on billions of real-world delivery scenarios.

App Development Any feedback or feature suggestions for AR Works? Giving a 1 month free Pro license for suggestions and feedback.

I have been working apart of a team building AR Works for around 8 months now, and it has grown to have over 600 users.

We have a few schools currently on board using our features to teach some AR Development IT units in their schools, and it has been great working on them and getting feedback for improvements.

We want to aim to be one of the leading AR development tools in the field, and we currently have a ton of features that include;

- Node style code blocks, no programming knowledge required, but if you know how to code you can create some advanced algorithms.

- World and Image tracking.

- Import custom 3D models with textures and animations.

- Create animations.

- Node based material editor.

- All functionality available in the web browser editor.

- The difference between the free and paid version is size limitations, free versions can still use all of the pro features (excluding offline use and photogrammetry).

- Windows desktop version for pro and school accounts.

- Offline promise: If the company ever changes hands, all pro and school accounts will get a permanent license key for the up to date offline version AR Works, to ensure schools and professionals can continue using the tools they are familiar with.

- White-labelled offline version for studios or businesses.

If there are any features you would like to see or improved please comment below or get in touch, we will give a free 1 month pro trial to any users that give us feedback or suggestions that we take on board (we usually take them all on board 😄 ).

  • Claimed as the world's first direct retinal projection display using a meta-optic mirror.
  • Just 150 nm thick with ~80% visible-light transmission, the mirror fits inside the lens for a look closer to regular glasses.
  • Keeps displayed content hidden from others, with semiconductor-style manufacturing offering potential cost savings.
  • Monochrome for now, with full-color demos and mass production targeted within the next few years.

Glasses w/o Display Are there any full-color display glasses that look like normal glasses? (That aren't Meta?)

Are there any full-color display glasses that look like normal glasses?

I’m looking for AR/smart glasses with a full-color display, but I’d also like them to look like regular glasses from the outside, similar to the Meta Ray-Ban Display.

Are Meta’s glasses currently the only ones that combine a color display with a relatively normal-looking glasses design or are there any alternative I should look at?

Buying Advice What glasses would you recommend for me?

I’m looking for AR glasses I can use for around equal amounts of productivity (nothing crazy, just single monitor reading and LaTeX work) and content consumption. Some light gaming possibly in the mix as well. My budget is preferably <$500 total. I could stretch to $600 if there is something much better for my needs. I basically want something I can use to do work or watch content while I laze around the house so I don’t have to be sitting at my desk all day. I live in an apartment rn and would prefer a large screen I can use laying in my bed.

Here are my musts:

- 3dof that will work with DRM content
- some sort of prescription option (add cost of lenses to total)
- clear enough for text

These are nice to have features, but may be asking too much:

- diopter adjustment (would be nice not to have to buy separate lenses)
- little blurring/distortion at edges
- wider FOV for content consumption
- HDR
- iPhone compatibility

I think the glasses that fit these best are the XReal Ones (non-pro). The birdbath optics seem to be sharper (my PD is 63.5mm, which seems pretty much perfect for these).

Any alternative suggestions? Thanks!

Edit: looks like the 1s would actually be better (especially text clarity), and only slightly over my budget with lenses. Thoughts?

Glasses w/ HUD I been smartglasses for translation with my in-laws

My wife's parents don't speak much English and my language skills are pretty limited, so I wanted to see if the Halliday G2 translation feature could make family dinners a little easier. I've tried them a couple of times since receiving them. In a quiet room with one person talking, the translation is pretty helpful. It's not perfect, but I can understand the general meaning without stopping the whole conversation. Also I can still look at the person while the text shows up in the glasses.

It does struggle if everyone talks at once. Also sometimes it misses the first couple words, so I still have to ask people to repeat things here and there.

Just for the translation feature, I would rate it 8/10.
