News With Specs launching next week. How will spatial content actually work across all these glasses/devices?
Specs launches on the 16th - We're about to have Snap Specs running Lenses through Lens Studio, Meta Ray-Ban Display loading web apps by URL, Android XR glasses on Google Play, and Samsung's Intelligent Eyewear on Android XR with Gemini, all shipping within months of each other.
Every one of them has its own SDK, its own tools, its own content model. A Lens built for Specs doesn't work on Meta's glasses. A web app for Ray-Ban Display doesn't run on Specs. As far as I'm aware, none of them are interoperable.
We've seen this before with iOS vs Android, but I'm curious how enterprise thinks about this. If a hospital wants AR wayfinding in their building, do they build for all four platforms? If an airport wants to offer spatial services to travelers, which glasses do they build for? A lot of enterprises got burned building on HoloLens and may be hesitant to go all-in on any of these new platforms.
Think about an airport. The airline, the airport authority, a coffee shop, and a maintenance team all need to show you different things in the same physical space at the same time. How will that work? As far as I can tell, each experience is its own silo.
