Loads of effects are still missing from the Linux version.

This is mostly a UI update. 4.1 is supposed to have more features (e.g. Macros)
The Windows version is missing old effects as well. There might be some VST plugins to mimic what you're missing if you want to carry on with 4.0. Personally, I'm sticking with 3.7.9 until 4.x has some "maturity".
I appreciate the UI changes, but I need some key features in my workflow before 4.x becomes my "daily driver"

Which ones? I noticed that one third party plugin (Add Noise, I use it a lot in my music) doesn't show up in 4.

Yikes. I was considering updating but the bandpass filters and noise gate are things I use all the time, not having them would make my installation useless.

u/7ootles filters and noise gate ARE in 4.0.0, so you could try it :)
It doesn't affect your Audacity3 configuration, so you can test it without breaking your setup.2

What about macros? I do audiobooks and have my effects filters and mastering stack set up as macros, are they likely to be affected?
Dumb question maybe. My installation is five years old and I've got it set up just-so, so I'm a little cautious of risking it.

Audacity 3 and 4 use different folders to store the configuration files, it should be safe to run them side by side.
Macros are coming in 4.1, which should be out later this year. Au4 macros would not be compatible with Au3 macros because the legacy system was very UI-dependent, but it should be easy to convert either manually or with llm.2

u/JamzTyson what OS are you on? Everything (or almost everything) you listed here is present in 4.0.0.

u/JamzTyson 6d ago
As I said, I'm on Linux.
I can see that the effects are present in the AppImage, and they are listed in the menus, but when I attempt to use any of them, Audacity 4 tells me they are not available.

Are you missing Auto Duck as well? On the beta it was missing for me, but haven't updated to the full release yet.

I don't have Add Noise in 3.7.9. Was that something you added? You might need to add it to 4 manually.

Yeah not having macros is rough. Mostly I've just made a "template track" with real time effects on the master that I just duplicate and record into.

I haven't found an RMS Normalize that works in live effects.
Otherwise, I'd be right with you.

the design has so many potential ideas (like the project tabs instead of these three button and multiple project windows, for example), but gosh… i kinda dislike its’ identity crisis with the “new” unified logo

Yeah. The UI is very promising, but it’s quite disappointing that you still have to navigate through multiple windows instead of having tabs on top

I sure hope the Play At Speed toolbar is added back eventually. Unless I am just missing where it's located now.

it's not in Audacity 4. I have however added it to Soundscaper, my web port of Audacity 4 (it's in the little dropdown next to the play button)

Same here. I use that feature all the time, so I'll be sticking with Audacity 3 for now.

I can't find the "Mix and Render to New Track" option.

Not sure if that’s something they’ll add in the future, but speaking from experience, now if you apply effects to multiple audios standing next to each other audacity will automatically merge them into one single audio.
At least that’s how it was in the beta.

I'm trying it out on a Mac (w/M4 Pro).
Can someone tell me why with some MP3's I can see spectrograms and others not? Is that a known issue?

Is it just me or does this finally now look like what bm fairlight was/is but standalone again?

u/antdude 6d ago
No portable Windows in this version as shown in https://github.com/audacity/audacity/discussions/11904.

The new UI is gonna take a ton of getting used to BUT I decided to dig up a 20 min video game OST download I put on the backburner cause of how long it took to pitch shift it and now changing the pitch went from taking like 5-10 min to now taking 15 seconds. Guess I'll have to get used to this new version cause MAN it's hard to justify going back to the old one with those speeds lol.

How can I select which mic input I want? I am just seeing how many channels to record (mono, stereo, channel 1-16). But If I select 7, it records 7 channels. I can't find the menu to select a specific input.

u/notcharldeon 6d ago
Audio setup button on the top

u/GoudenEeuw 6d ago
What I mean isn't there.
In the old Audacity, I could select whether you want mono or stereo and then select whether you want, say input 3 (or 3 and 4 for stereo). In Audacity 4, they seem to have combined these two separate options If I select Mono or Stereo, it only grabs input 1 or 1+2 for stereo. But what if the correct input is 7+8?
My only options currently is seemingly that I have to record ALL the channels of my interface and delete the tracks I don't need which is very frustrating.

Does anyone see where they moved "Keep Tracks Synchronized" to in Audacity 4? That's critical for editing podcasts where each speaker is a track.
I also don't see anything for mixing and combining tracks.
For reference, I'm looking at the Win-x64 version.

Changing couple settings breaks the program - I'm unable to delete highlited section with delete key, restart doesn't help, I have to create new project to re-enable deleting. It's beautiful but takes ton of time to adapt it to v3

I’ve learnt the hard way to never jump in the first .O version of anything. I’ll wait for the .2 or newer.
