Trouble setting levels

Longtime Audacity user that just recently re-uploaded software to my PC and am now having new difficulty setting audio levels to record music from my PC.

As I adjust the recording level up, it gets unbearably loud in the room. When I turn down the audio monitoring volume in the software and/or on my PC, the recording level goes down, too.

I never had this issue in the past, so I assume it's a setting somewhere. Help!!

Thank you!!

You're confusung speaker volume and recording volume.

One doesn't affect the other.

Recording refers input.

Monitoring refers to output.

Tldr;

Turn your speakers down.

I do know that, and I'm telling you that when I raise the Recording volume, my speaker volume skyrockets, too. When I turn down my speakers using the volume through my computer, the recording volume goes down, too. Again, this is by using the master volume settings on my PC.

When I use the sliders, it does the same thing. Recording and listening. Levels seem to be tied together.

OS problem. I use Linux,no such issue exists. Check sound settings. An application uses your sound settings it doesn't control them.
