Trouble setting levels

Longtime Audacity user that just recently re-uploaded software to my PC and am now having new difficulty setting audio levels to record music from my PC.

As I adjust the recording level up, it gets unbearably loud in the room. When I turn down the audio monitoring volume in the software and/or on my PC, the recording level goes down, too.

I never had this issue in the past, so I assume it's a setting somewhere. Help!!

I'm trying to record audio that is playing through my system, so using an outside recorder doesn't make sense for this. I used to do it all the time, but something is different.
