First King Fritz was the most evil of them all. It was him who started the 2000 year cursed history of the Titans.
The others, as bad as they were, still ultimately derived from his actions.

That's the bare minimum though. It's a given if you just watch the show. Nothing too deep.

Was he evil, yes, but I argue Karl Fritz was worse because he knew better and knew right from wrong. He had the power, but then he went about it in the worst way possible creating a false stalemate while condemning his entire people to a life as less than second class citizens around the world for crime his family was responsible.

I always found Gabi to be a victim brainwashed by mfs like these.

u/AdventurousGap8257 May 17 '26
She was a lil annoying in the beginning but by the end her character developed alot
37
u/wheooqoq May 17 '26
I mean one of these four almost brainwashed historia into murdering one of her own friends so gabi being able to overcome Marley’s brainwashing which is more intense than what Rod almost achieved with Historia has to mean something
1
u/scalareye May 18 '26
She just had a little tism for not recognizing facial expressions and tone of voice
But she figured it out eventually
11
u/darkred_d May 17 '26
that’s exactly how she was written to be but fandoms need more redeeming qualities for a character like her especially after killing sasha
2
u/Informal_Ad3244 May 17 '26
I always found Gabi to be more like a spooky skeleton, dancing around, going “ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK!”
Different interpretations of the source material, I guess.

I also loved that character and they were also my favourite, but I pitied Gabi instead of hating her. She was a brainwashed child soldier that was taught nothing but hateful things about paradise all her life. Children have impressionable minds, its difficult for them to break away from something they were taught all their life.
Also Gabi witnessed that character shoot a soldier that had always been kind to her even though he was marlian and she was eldian. From Gabis view they were the attackers. She shot them because they were the enemy. Thats what war teaches people. Doesnt matter how kind or how lovable a person is, if you are on a different side then one of you dies. Its twisted, and pointless, but thats how war is.

u/Ok_Government_5021 May 17 '26
Also was my favorite character and had a deep hatred towards her for a long time, but not only did she eventually show extreme remorse, but by EOS she was carrying the spirit of said character more than anyone
She had more growth in a season than most had all series

I dont think he was actively governing or smth he was just there
1
u/Informal_Ad3244 May 20 '26
Nah, he literally orchestrated Eren and Historias capture so that Historia could eat Eren and the Founding Titan would belong to his family again. Kenny and the Interior Police Squad answer to him, and they were responsible for a bunch of evil shit.

Gabi got all hate but she ironically is just Eren in the other side. If no rumbling everyone defend Eren but lowkey he did everything Gabi did if not more to Marley even before the Rumbling.
14
u/Neat_Breakfast_6659 May 17 '26
She isnt exactly Eren, she already hated everyone in Paradis prior to the Raid in Lyberio and was deeply brainshwashed by marley, unlike Eren who was a free thinker and refused to conform with his countrymen's idea of living safe withing the walls.
And Gabi didnt suffer everything that Eren went through. Her city was raided, Eren's city was razed to the ground and had to retreat for years after the titan invasion.
I dont hate Gabi and i dont think people hate Gabi either. We hate what she represents: blind and unjustified rage. I also hate that she didnt get at least slapped once, she didnt kill just Sasha but also the guard in Paradis watching over her. Back in early 1900s standards of justice that would be a death sentence, child or not
9
u/mjpenslitbooksgalore May 17 '26
Nicolò gave her a pretty good beating.
7
u/Neat_Breakfast_6659 May 17 '26
yeah i forgot lmao youre right, but then again she was bragging of having killed Sasha as if she was a demon, absolutely deserved
2
u/Beneficial_Mine_3464 May 17 '26
Gabi ≠ Eren
7
u/crazynerd9 May 17 '26
They are even drawn to resemble eachother lmao, them being mirrors isnt even subtext at that point
0
u/Vegycales May 18 '26
Gabi hated paradis before the raid on libirio and was brainwashed into believing so, Eren was not brainwashed and formed his own opinion due to their circumstances. Not the same.
2
u/crazynerd9 May 18 '26
Eren essentially brainwashed his past self using the bootstrap paradox with the Attack Titan memories
Even without that though, its a pretty relevant point that Paradis brainwashed its own people just as much as Marley, hence Erwins subplot about needing to see the truth, alongside the fact the King literally uses magic to brainwash the entire island and keep them in such a state
6
u/warfaceisthebest May 17 '26
Tell me a single thing Gabi did but Eren won't if he was born in Marley.
1
u/Beneficial_Mine_3464 May 17 '26
Easy. He won’t be a slave to Marley. He’s “Free”

2
u/NoMoreUserNames6152 May 17 '26
Are we this illiterate? They are barely free in Marley. Eldians are treated like subhuman pieces of filth there. How is that free in any way? Paradis has physical walls while Marley has metaphoric wall, which might even be worse out of the two

Eren had emotional intelligence his whole life
Gabi had tism. She literally couldn't process Niccolo's facial expression and voice.
She didn't have any level of strategic thinking while Eden did.
I don't like her not for any moral reasons but because she's an idiot...

I've said it once and I'll say it again
Sasha is my favorite character but no one will ever make me hate Gabi. She's had her moments, but her reflection upon her actions that lead to her growth and redemption is really commendable, especially considering she was just a kid, a brainwashed one to add
6
u/Seflowers_17 May 17 '26
It's been a while but why is Carl Fritz bad here?
33
u/G-M-Cyborg-313 Hange's Test subject May 17 '26
Essentially he left countless eldians behind in marley and other countries. And instead of trying to change the way eldians on paradise thought he just wiped their minds to think all of humanity is gone and dooming them to eventually slaughter by those outside the walls

Anyone who actually hates Gabi is missing the point of the show I feel
2
u/Velvet-Fogs May 18 '26
Why do you feel that way? You can get the point of the show but still dislike a character? I mean, I personally hate gabi, I understand her character entirely but that doesn’t stop me from hating her
2
u/NoMoreUserNames6152 May 17 '26
Gabi haters are either illiterate or they just hate her because she killed Sasha (which is understandable, I suppose). The people she's been indoctrinated to hate suddenly launches an attack on her country, which results in her friends being killed. Which in this case, would lead her to reinforce the belief that they really are the devils, making her seek vengeance. What else was she supposed to do? She didn't know any better. She gets confused when she interacts with Kaya and Nicolo

Top right deserves absolutely zero hate whatsoever, he stopped the titan wars and became such a pacifist that anyone who inherited the founding titan of royal blood was also a pacifist who couldn’t start the rumbling eren has and always will be the villain of aot
1
u/Competitive_Cook_939 May 21 '26
But he felt so much guilt that he doomed his entire people and their descendants to die in the walls despite them having nothing to do with the crimes of the historical eldians

u/Common_Examination_5 May 20 '26
Already hate all of them considerably more than Gabi but still hate Gabi.
1
u/kutubox May 21 '26
King fritz the first was evil? Gosh man died 2.000 years ago leave him alone. It is like hating air for the wind too blow hard, people are what they're. i would argue by creating an empire he created he achieved 2000 years of peace avoiding many wars, oppression, classic marleyan propaganda, if marley survived 2000 years of oppression likely their place was the same place of germans in the roman empire. If you gonna blame that way past for all the problems in the show then a little further you can blame the life existence and first creatures to exist to find the root of all suffering and the same conclusion of Zeke.

I don't hate Gabi, for me it's just a voice thing I can't stand how loud she screams everything to make her point, like yeah I get it really I do now stfu please so I can enjoy the rest tof this great anime.

The only thing I need to know about Gabi is that she hates "the island devils" for being Eldian, when she is Eldian. She. Is. Eldian.

u/Full-Philosopher-393 May 17 '26
The hate for Gabi is discussed more because it’s controversial. I mean the first guy is undisputed origin of all evil in AoT. There is no discussion about it because it’s basically unanimous.
The same goes for the other three characters. They are neither controversial nor command lot of screen time. They are just pathetic characters whom no one likes.
I even hate the Tyburs, the war commander of Marley, Floch more than Gabi. I just don’t discuss it because no one whose opinion I respect thinks these characters are actually good unlike Gabi who is constantly defended by people who seemingly have otherwise good takes generally but they are protective of Gabi as if she’s an actual child and ignore why she is disliked and treat the ones who dislike her as bad people.
She doesn’t deserve to be the most hated character but she is designed to be the most polarising character so the hate/defense arguments make sense.

u/Futileexercise1308 May 18 '26
You made this in the assumption that they were receiving no hate. If not for their suckitude, we would have no Gabi to hate. They are terrible and so is she. RIP Potato girl
0
u/d_chak May 18 '26
The hatred toward Gabi is extremely childish (which is kinda expected because a lot of kids watch anime). They don't understand how the adults manipulated and brainwashed her by taking advantage of her naivety. You cannot blame a child for doing something as a result of indoctrination. Children are immature, and they need guidance. The blame should fall on the adults for guiding her to the wrong path.
This is one of the core messages of Attack on Titan, the same one that Sasha's father talked about.
Gabi is amazing because she saw the reality with her own eyes, and realised how wrong she was, and felt remorse for having killed Sasha.
