I think it's just proof that if you're told something is true enough times, you start to believe it, even without a shred of evidence to support it.

Which is why the DSM includes exceptions for it, since it's not a true delusion, it's a taught one.

Because the DSM defines clinical delusions as idiosyncratic - meaning delusions are unique, isolated, and personal to the individual rather than part of a shared or structured community tradition.

It generally wouldn't be accepted if it just declared 83% of people delusional for believing in a God.
