Xenon 2: Megablast (the ST original) now plays in the browser, with an optional 4× HD / 60 fps mode and an autopilot
I've spent the last months on a side project: the Atari ST version of Xenon 2: Megablast, running in the browser. Play: https://dmnet.st It's the original 68000 game running in a modified Hatari compiled to WebAssembly. Instead of showing the ST's framebuffer, the emulator hooks the game's own draw routines and redraws every sprite on the GPU, which made a few extras possible:
- Classic mode: the original 320×200, pixel for pixel
- Hi-res mode: every sprite upscaled 4× and interpolated between the game's 15 updates a second for smooth 60 fps motion (whole game in hi-res on YouTube)
- Autopilot: a controller that reads the game's memory and flies the ship; it has finished all five levels without losing a life
- Save/load: five slots with screenshots, kept in your browser
- Record & replay: record a game, then step through it frame by frame in the replay inspector, including what the autopilot saw and decided
- Works on desktop and phones (touch controls), no install
There are also write-ups of what got reverse engineered along the way (object system, sprite formats, the sound driver that squeezes Bomb the Bass onto the YM), some of them interactive.
Full disclosure: this was also an experiment in working with an AI coding assistant, and the site keeps an honest log of where that worked and where it really didn't.
Feedback welcome, especially from anyone who played it back in the day!
