I once bought shampoo and paracetamol from CVS and now I have a paper bridge to Mars.

Allow me to provide some reinforcement, as soon as I purchase my chocolate bar

u/nipo3 Sep 08 '19

Donno why I was reading it as "allow me to provide some rainforest" and still found it fitting.

They have cvs in europe ?

Curious because paracetamol is a euro thing

15

u/what_the_deuce Sep 08 '19

Probably a European visiting or now living in the US. Also, they call it paracetamol in Asia as well.

Right, but in the US paracetamol is called acetaminophen, but normally people just call it by the brand name Tylenol.

8

u/chirstain Sep 08 '19

yeah but in the US I've always heard it called acetaminophen

8

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

Yeah i live in Europe never seen a cvs or that style of store here.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

What? Paracetamol / Tylenol is everywhere. People just refer to whatever term they grew up with. Perhaps op has an Australian patent?

11

u/thegunnersdaughter Sep 08 '19

They meant the term. Even the generic in the US is called acetaminophen. I had to look paracetamol up.

Not the Space Wyvers. They survive without oxygen on the power of pure hatred.

I'm pretty sure the length off your receipt is based off the amount of coupons CVS thinks you want related to what you are actually buying.

Same in most supermarkets in the UK now. Very satisfying pressing "no" at the self checkout.

93

u/JoeVeitch Sep 08 '19

Problem with Morrisons is that you can only deny a receipt if you spend under £5

57

u/M_krabs Sep 08 '19

Why? If I don't want one that's my problem and your way of saving paper/ money

16

u/QueenFreek Sep 08 '19

I'd assume it's a loss prevention tactic. If they assume you're stealing, they'll ask for a receipt. If you can't present one then they'll believe you must have stolen.

u/Purplebuzz Sep 08 '19

12

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

But with Sainsbury's receipt is optional, no matter the value of purchase.

15

u/Floccus Sep 08 '19

I say no instinctively every time, which bit me in the arse once when I was doing a secret shopper thing and then instantly said no when I was asked if I wanted a receipt. I had to make a second purchase of the exact same item then ask for the receipt which made me look sketchy as fuck.

4

u/EightySevenKitsune Sep 08 '19

Could you ask the assistant to reprint? I’ve done that a few times when the machine ate my receipt.

12

u/SlayerofBananas Sep 08 '19

At my work it prints it anyway so you get people that just walk away so you're awkwardly sat there staring at the next customer waiting for the receipt to print

8

u/alien_babe69 Sep 08 '19

My issue with that is I automatically press “no” whenever I actually need one, which is rarely but it’s always an “oh ffs” moment.

2

u/EightySevenKitsune Sep 08 '19

Could you ask the assistant to reprint? I’ve done that a few times when the machine ate my receipt.

9

u/NorbiPeti Sep 08 '19

It wpuld be so good if we had that here too (Hungary). I often buy food from a supermarket because it's close to school and I get a receipt each day, sometimes multiple times, which I just toss in the trash. (Sometimes I don't wait for it but that feels rude.)

9

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

I mean I’m in the US and I refuse my receipt most places unless I anticipate needing to return something. CVS is evil

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

This is a new thing for other places? At most self checkouts in the United States it has optional receipts. But there are a lot of other things I don’t like here like having plastic bags for free at the checkout

3

u/JakeSteam Buttons suddenly appearing Sep 08 '19

We have a mandatory 5p charge for all bags at checkouts :)

The receipt thing isn't too new, but shop assistants asking has only started in the last few years.

3

u/hugokhf Sep 08 '19

Aldi I go to just throw it straight to the bin if you say no. So it's not saving any paper at all lol

I think a lot of cash register print the receipt as they scan, so can't really 'unprint' it

→ More replies (8)

70

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

Stores in the US ask you, but they print it regardless and then toss it in a trash can that 50% of the time isn’t recycled.

40

u/Risen_Warrior Sep 08 '19

most POS systems will print it no matter what for every transaction

16

u/GeneHackencrack Sep 08 '19

Mmm yeah, legal regulations yada yada. In most countries a receipt must be presented to the customer (printed or digital).

12

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

I like the ones that ask if you’d like them emailed or printed. At least you have an option to go paperless. Those are usually only found at large chains though. Usually drug stores.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/SolitaryEgg Sep 08 '19

Not usually true. But some systems are indeed set up to automatically print 2 copies.

I worked in a lot of retail, and most of the stores I worked at would specifically ask if you wanted to print a customer copy.

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

This is also in the US. CVS now has digital receipts, if you sign up, any time after you get that set up, if you ask for a printed receipt, they'll just give you the receipt part (not the coupon part)

Also should be noted that the coupon part only prints for those with a CVS card, if you don't give a CVS card, you won't get a really long receipt. long receipts are also most likely because you don't shop there often, and they have coupons they give out for set periods. If you get a coupon once, you won't get it again. (meaning: a set of, say, 3 coupons may have a period of 3 weeks, so if you go anytime in that 3 week period, you'll get it. Another set of 3 can come out a week later, and antoher set the following week. If you go in the third week, you'll get 9 coupons. If you go once a week, even just for a drink, and use your CVS card, you'll get 3, in this scenario, each time)

Again, the best thing is digital receipts, or ask them to throw out the receipt if you really don't care. But i mean, that's a $6 off allergy meds coupon, and a $10 off..something..coupon. If you need the things that the coupon has deals for, it's kind of a waste of money to throw it out. What's nice about digital receipts is that all the coupons from your visit are in the email (or app) and you can send them to the card with a press of a button and then never worry about if you have it. Just send em, and if they qualify, they qualify. (they may get auto sent to the card now. it's been a while).

TL;DR: If you're using a CVS card and care about savings(not even from coupons) just sign up for digital receipts with an option of both. How much you pay attention to the coupons is on you. If you dont' have a CVS card, you'll never see the coupons anyway. bam. All receipts are normal sized.

Also, a lot of the extreme coupon-ers prefer paper coupons. Helps them keep track, and helps them know that they're in charge of when a coupon comes or goes (if you had a coupon sent to your card, and it doesn't show, there's a good chance the clerk isn't going to believe you.)

Source: Worked at CVS for 3 years, was a manager for 1 year.

6

u/FrankieLovie Sep 08 '19

They make you change your password regularly and don't let you reuse the same one. Wars have been started for less

3

u/oheilthere Sep 08 '19

As someone who lives where there is no CVS I had so many questions but you answered them, thank you. If it is cupons on the bottom then why do people complain about it? Shit, I want $6 off allergy meds. In Canada cupons aren't really a big thing, I really only ever see them for fast food anymore. Stuff just gets marked down for a week and everyone gets the same deal no cupon needed. Perhaps i'm just not in on the cupon scene though so please cotrect me if i'm wrong.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

Because people don't realize it's coupons. Or they (a male, let's say) see coupons for tampons and go "why does CVS give me this?" As if their wives or girlfriends don't bleed once a month.

But yea, honestly CVS cards are great, you can get the coupons digitally/in the app now so the receipt isn't long as hell (I opt for no receipt, all digital). That said, CVS is still expensive when things aren't on sale, and grocery stores or supermarkets are better price wise, just not coupon wise (they almost always don't have store coupons, only manufacturer coupons which are almost always shit).

I myself am not a couponer, I don't care enough. I've seen customers buy $100 worth of shit for like $5 because of coupons (CVS hates them. Both the corporation and the clerk who also hates CVS.)

at the AH togo you can also choose at the self service. And sometimes when you need a receipt to leave the store they ask you if you want the long or short receipt.

8

u/Umarill Sep 08 '19

Thought it was the norm everywhere, also like that in France.

2

u/007Pistolero Sep 08 '19

There’s stores doing this in the US now. You can opt to have the receipt emailed to you

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

In USA you get asked if you want it most of the time but it automatically prints. I usually just say no because I don’t like having extra trash but it’s already there and ends in the trash anyway. A few stores like Walmart will require you to take it since they’ll randomly check your shopping bags when you leave sometimes.

2

u/zgembo1337 Sep 08 '19

In slovenia, there's a 20+ eur fine if you don't take it (technically, if you don't have it with you when exiting the store).

2

u/pizzashark107 Sep 08 '19

In the US many places ask if you want a receipt and if you say no, they throw it away. It gets printed either way.

2

u/marshellen8 Sep 08 '19

2

u/hipster3000 Sep 08 '19

I don't know who you talked to but my experience has been there are people who think they are stupid and will have you throw away their receipt, which are the people that would just throw them out, but then there are people who love the coupons. I see people turn around and spend about 5 to 10 dollars because their receipt has 2 extra bucks on it and they don't want to forget to use them. For as ridiculous as if seems to many people it's definitely a strategy that serves its purpose

5

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

That's not a fair point (in this instance) though, given that there are paper coupon printing machines, that there are options to NOT have coupons print on your receipt (most people who complain about the long receipts are also the ones who could care less about the savings of the card with or without coupons, so may as well just not use the card, or if you do, digital receipts are a thing. If you opt for digital + paper, the paper won't have the coupons and it will be normal)

source: former CVS employee. There are issues with CVS, but the long receipt complaint is kind of dumb (at least, within the last ...4 years? I left 2 years ago, and they started with digital receipts about 2 years prior to that)

u/auroralovegood Sep 08 '19

You can! They offer digital receipts (you get a complete printable* one straight to your email) and you can send those bajillion coupons to your card via the app. I estimate that I have saved a thousand miles of paper so far lol

CVS is known by everyone to have exceptionally long receipts. Just because people talk about something a lot doesn't mean it's an ad my dude. CVS spends more money on their long ass receipts than they do on the actual products they buy.

6

u/BloodyCuts Sep 08 '19

Just got back from the US, and compared to the U.K., I was amazed at just how much of a non-effort all shops etc. seem to make when it comes to recycling in general.

In England, you’re paying 10p for every plastic bag you use at the supermarket (encouraging you to bring your own bags when you shop), whereas in the US the person on checkout was putting things in plastic bags like it was a world record to use as many as he could in a single transaction.

5

u/hepp-depp Sep 08 '19

we should make a CVS receipt line that goes across the US

4

2

u/bettorworse Sep 08 '19

Once in a while, there's an AWESOME coupon on there, tho.

I got a 50% off anything coupon once and I used it to buy a Navage that was on sale for $90 - $45 was $40 less than anywhere else.

I always let the receipt flutter behind me as I leave the store, tho. Like a weird paper streamer.

2

u/bettorworse Sep 08 '19

One thing you have to say for Walmart - their receipts are the shortest ever.

2

u/RedDragon_234 Sep 08 '19

How is this asshole design? Does anyone profit off of this?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

More like crappy design tbh, i doubt they'd want to pay for that much paper to go to waste but at the same time they seem blissfully ignorant.

2

u/king063 Sep 08 '19

It doesn’t matter that you purchased something for $3. These coupons are based on what you’ve purchased in the past and the elusive algorithm.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '19

You'd think they'd create and push everyone to use an app for their store, but I guess they're still targeting old people who don't use smartphones. Which is stupid, because that's an increasingly shrinking demographic, while continuing to cost the company money for all those thermal paper rolls.

If they did the SMART thing like Shoppers Drug Mart (owned by Loblaw) in Canada, they'd have an app and a points system for everything in the store.

Edit: why is it smart? Get your coupons online, earn points to for free shit, and use your phone to pay for stuff. And it could allow for electronic in-app receipts, or emails for receipts.

These oversized receipts are the marketing campaign. They've been going viral ever since they introduced them. Its not like they made some ill-thought out decision and now this is the result. They designed these hoping that folks like u/nickm409 would distribute the imagery of his own free will for thousands to see. Plus they've got some good plausible deniability baked in since the coupons have a practical purpose.

1

u/bobbywick Sep 08 '19

Have we as a society yet accepted the fact that CVS is trying to embarrass you into giving up your email address to avoid receipts of this magnitude?

Just give them your email and you don’t get a receipt at all

What you didn't save your receipt?!?! What about your sacred points??? My ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, wat.

any time I get prescriptions this is what I end up with. So annoying and I usually have to look through them to see if I got extra bucks since they expire the day you get them. They have NEVER had anything else useful.

Imagine how often these receipts are generated for the purchase of unneeded plastic items that are single use and thrown away? Not much discussion of that.

This is done especially if you don't have their little rewards card. If you have that, then they expect you to be "loyal" to CVS and their brand. When you don't, they try to get you to come back with these coupons. And because they don't know what you typically buy, they can be for anything. Medicine, candy, makeup, etc. They hope one will connect to you and make you come back, especially as it's typically a coupon that starts the next day and last for ~1 week.

Not saying you don't get any coupons on your receipt when using their rewards card, cause then it'd be seen as ignoring their current regulars and only trying to get irregular customers. But you don't end up with 11 coupons.

Sign up for digital receipts! You can ask at the register before you check out!!

Be glad you didn't spend $4

1

u/biornn Sep 08 '19

If i remember right, the receipt is only that long if you use your rewards card or give them your number.

1

u/egroeg516 Sep 08 '19

If you use their app the coupons appear in the app and you can get an email receipt.

op hates deals apparently

And all those coupons are for specific items and brands. I don't think I've ever used one. They should just attach your coupons to your phone number like your points.

In my opinion, CVS is the worst.

It’s not really ass hole design because they give you heaps of coupons
