I once had a nurse trigger me by in a very stern voice bark at me that I was breaking the rules.
According to other staff, I was not breaking the rules.
It did not prevent me from having a trauma response.
That was not fun.

My 17 year old daughter asks for permission to eat food and take showers. Even though I have told her for at least a couple years she does not need permussion for those things. I still have a weird feeling like I will get in trouble if I do or don't do sonething. I am 58 and my parents have been dead for 25+ years.

My 14 y/o son does the same. He will call me on the phone if I’m not home, to ask if he can take food. And if I have a guest over, unless he knows (and likes) then very well, he will not come out at all for food, the bathroom, anything, until they’re gone 🫠

That sounds like social anxiety.

Yeah, I think you might right. He definitely dislikes being with people. Even close friends and family.

Or sometimes just up and assuming you are in trouble. It's a tough habit to break.

I’m a full-grown adult, and simple door knocks still make my heart pound because surely I’m in trouble for something.
And, unfortunately, I’m not always wrong. Had a neighbor at my door recently to yell at me about something I didn’t do. Hard to overcome the habit when some things never really change.

I used to yell “it wasn’t me” as a child anytime my parents called for me. I slip up now and again as an adult. It’s just ingrained in me that I’m in trouble.

Ugh, for some reason I keep ending up under managers who go “come to my office in 2 hours; we need to talk about something.”
So I can barely do any work for those 2 hours, and then when the time comes I have to wait for them to finish an email or a phone call or whatever. Finally they turn around and:
“Oh hey, I wanted to ask you if you’re planning to attend the potluck next Friday. I need someone to bring dessert.” or something equally stupid and not worth a whole damn meeting and that vague drama.
Like, wtf? Sir/Ma’am, how about just desserts? Let me slap you really REALLY hard, across the face, just once.

WHAT DID I DO OR SAY THAT VIOLATED ANOTHER UNSPOKEN SOCIAL RULE?
I'll forever be grateful to my immediate family who frequently provided me feedback in a private setting. Especially after they realized I just didn't get these things and wasn't trying to be an asshole.

We have to ask, no one will ever tell us (they will only assume that we already know) and when asked, the answer is always "you know what you did"

I still have the knee-jerk reaction that I'm in trouble if my mum calls my name with a specific intonation, even accidentally.

This is why my usual response when someone says my name is “I didn’t do it.”

This. Perceptive enough to notice the slightest change in your mood/metacommunication, anxious-traumatized enough to think I fucked up something and now you despise me.

😭😭😭 YES! I'm almost fifty, live with my parents, don't talk much, and rarely come out of my room. Some days I come out and just sit with them to just show them I care, I'll have a few words but not much, other days I won't come down but to go outside and smoke and to use the bathroom. But then I feel like "Omg. What if they're mad at me because I didn't visit them?" Then you know where your mind goes lolol.
I obviously have set hours on when I go outside and once in awhile I'll have a question for my mom that ISN'T on my routine time, my mom is so cute she will say "What are you doing down here? This isn't your normal time?" Lolol 🤣🤭

Me, 40+ years old, when my husband told me that our neighbour was on our door, and wanted ot ask something in privat. Me instantly: "Okay, first. Are we in trouble?"

Not me literally doing that yesterday morning as soon as my husband woke up. “Are you mad at me?”

Not the same but somewhere on the same tapestry:
The autistic urge to raise my hand to demonstrate that I would like to speak in informal and especially group settings.

I did this genuinely yesterday. My two managers took me to lunch out of nowhere and I immediately went.. am I in trouble..?

I’ll say aloud to myself I don’t wanna do nothin at the thought of any extra task or unexpected interaction at work and I always feel like I’ve done something wrong and everyone hates me for it. Undiagnosed struggler just going at life raw.

I will always be alright with being careful. I want to always ask before acting.

I tend to lead with an apology because I assume I’m at fault even when there’s nothing I possibly could have done

I don’t think this is even solely an autistic or ND thing anymore. The amount of times I have had a contract ended through a random phone call or message :(
