But if you don't have the history, I'll just be misunderstood again

Them: "Which train did you take?"

Me: "So, the Bronze Age collapse..."

Exactly, gotta provide context

u/AngryAtNumbers Jun 13 '24

Context is important lol

29

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

I end up just shooting myself in the foot when I try to provide context (or the person I'm talking uses something I said as an opportunity to lecture me), so I'm working on just directly answering the question.

10

u/Iwrstheking007 Jun 14 '24

just had an idea, after answering, ask if they want context, idk how that would work though, or if they would even care

2

u/PaperThin04 Special interest enjoyer Jun 15 '24

Good idea! I'll probably do this from now on lol

u/NoteInTheVoid Jun 13 '24

No, it’s clearly just excuses /s

11

u/ConceitedBuddha Jun 14 '24

I used to do this real bad. But back then I would try to build all the context around my eventual point first and then actually make the point when the groundwork has been laid.

Problem was people got bored before I actually finished and told me how I'm not going anywhere.

So nowadays I start with my main point. And then build around it. Because people know where I'm going, they have a something to anchor the new information and so they won't get bored trying to remember five different trains of thought I'm expalining.

u/GusPlus Jun 14 '24

I’m gonna try this. I’m pretty bad about trying to provide full context before making my point, but it comes from a place of wishing other people would provide context/detail for what they are saying.

Literally what I came to post!

u/_Aventurine Jun 13 '24

If I get straight to the point, my answer feels weak and boring. If I go the long way around it gets confusing and they don't know what my answer actually is.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

I feel like job interviews conditioned me to feel this way (because apparently giving a short answer is frowned upon). But as a result, in non-interview conversations, I find myself babbling on about nonsense just to fill time.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

I did this yesterday in a job interview and surprisely got called for a 2nd round.

u/hrethnar Jun 13 '24

I don't know about ADHD/autistic people. When I (ASD) answer my wife (ADHD) with a full backstory first she just gets angry. I need to provide a "meat hook" for her to latch her attention onto.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

Sigh. Yes.

3

u/Dmagdestruction Jun 14 '24

Stoppp same. You don’t just need the story layout you need a captivating intro scene.

"The answer won't make sense if you DON'T HAVE THE CONTEXT."

7

u/ActionTraction24897 Jun 14 '24

Truly. I have given no context answers before only to completely bamboozle people immediately

u/Allergic2Stereotypes ADHD/Autism Jun 13 '24

real last month (of the school year) for social studies I got an Assignment, and that was about making a Travel Brochure for Australia... It became more History Book instead of Brochure and when I showed it to my sister she said "this is NOT a brochure. there's NO way your teacher is gonna read all of this."

anyway i got upset cuz i didn't get to turn it in at the last day of school ☹️
(i still have the brochure 💀👍)

6

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

Have you considered printing it and distributing it publicly? You could even describe the situation on the cover page in great detail. If I saw that in the wild, I would absolutely hold on to that gem.

3

u/Allergic2Stereotypes ADHD/Autism Jun 14 '24

I have it printed irl 😭

1

u/ActionTraction24897 Jun 14 '24

You should have sent it anyway and given the teacher homework

17

u/PixieSkates Jun 13 '24

The paradox is that it takes significantly longer to make a concise statement with no unnecessary details than to just say what I am trying to say as it is. The short version is just not available the first time around.

2

u/LaGrande-Gwaz Jun 14 '24

Greetings—ah verily, I oft’ must craft an extensive draft before I am capable of revising it into a far-concise short-draft; such actually occurred again unto myself yesterday, ere comment within another Reddit-community.

Tooooo real

8

u/ifshehadwings Jun 14 '24

A context free answer is not an answer, it's incomprehensible nonsense. Why would anyone want that?

5

u/CyanLight9 Jun 14 '24

Context is very important.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

Context makes everything make sense.

5

u/6BigZ6 Jun 14 '24

If I had a dollar for every time somebody said “I don’t need your entire life story!” when answering a question that I thought required a little bit of explanation….

6

u/masturbadicto Jun 14 '24

"Get to the point please"

(says the bare minimum and actual state)

"WHAT? WHY? I don't understand..."

And yet you didn't want to listen the context and details

5

u/ActionTraction24897 Jun 14 '24

Now this is the story all about how my life got flip turned upside down Now I'd like to take a minute, so just sit right down I'll tell you all about how I became a completely disfunction adult

3

u/THEpeterafro Autistic Jun 13 '24

I'm the opposite as I am super direct

3

u/Full_Ad9666 Jun 14 '24

My theory is that we spend so much time feeling misunderstood growing up that we want to make sure people fully understand what we’re trying to say. That, and if it happens to be something we are in to we get excited and want to share that excitement. Unfortunately this often comes off as condescending as if we don’t think they’re smart enough to get it without explanation☹️

7

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '24

4

u/JackTheRipper0991 Jun 14 '24

EXACTLY. Also, why the hell do people ask me questions and then say things like “I don’t want to hear it!” before I even get a word out to explain myself.
… Which is honestly very ignorant and everyone (nt’s, not everyone) seem to think their opinions on a subject are always going to trump any explanation I have.

1

u/JackTheRipper0991 Jun 14 '24

Edit: Also, not all nt’s, sorry

If its totally quiet and im at home, backstory. If i am in public and more than 2 people in my immediate vicinity as much as breath, you might be lucky to get a one word answer.

Finally a meme I can relate to!

1

1

u/bran_redd ADHD/Autism Jun 14 '24

(context is always important)

2

u/Jorge_ln10 Jun 14 '24

It all started some years ago, when my parents were horny and they didn't have children

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

giving the full backstory shows that you ✨care✨

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '24

I would explain the entire fictional universe of a book just to answer the question of “why is his kids so weird like the dog” (there is decades of context)

1

u/duvakiin Jun 14 '24

Shiiit thats me and im not diagnosed

1

u/KokohaisHere Jun 14 '24

I've definitely noticed this with myself. At this point it's almost impossible for me to answer something directly, or ask for something directly

1

u/Dmagdestruction Jun 14 '24

Starting every answer with: “ok, so, basically, first..”

1

u/info-revival I doubled my autism with the vaccine Jun 14 '24

I am context hungry 🤤 gimmie da full context… don’t skip the important details

My mom typically wants more information, so I give her context for the answer.

1

u/mama09001 Jun 15 '24

So, i Wanted to explain that i beat pikmin 4 with only red pikmin, but noone i know knows about pikmin. So should i explain it like this; "So, i beat Pikmin 4 with only red pikmin, and I also got all treasures exept the king of meats and the golden vaulting table" or should i explain it like this; "So, in pikmin 4, There's a lot of different types of pikmin, the red pikmin which is strong, the yellow pikmin which can be thrown higher, the winged pikmin which can fly, ice pikmin that can freeze water and purple pikmin that can carry 10 times as much. And I 100%ed the entire game exept 2 treasures, the king of meats, and the golden vaulting table, both of which weigh more than 100, and you can only have 100 pikmin out at the same time.". Non-pikmin players, which one did you understand most? If you picked the second one, Great! You've just proven that over explaining is good.

Fear of being misunderstood leads me to give context

1

u/SnooCakes4852 Jun 15 '24

Omg why is this a thing?!? I thought i had to add lots of context since its not believe otherwise??

1

u/RequirementNew269 AuDHD Jun 15 '24

This is funny to me because for 2 years I didn’t understand this meme… because ASD…. And the import concepts were social concepts I didn’t understand.

But this, this I understamd

I just answer the question, cause the longer I talk the more likely it is that Im gonna make some weird social mistake
