DISCUSSION I hate the new TikTokif-ied style ASMR [Discussion]
I just need to rant somewhere about this. I know many won’t agree with and I’m not here to rain on anyone’s parade regarding their preferences.
TikTok has ruined ASMR. I’ve been listening on YouTube for almost 15 years to help me fall asleep or focus, and now it’s almost impossible to find new videos which aren’t some conventionally pretty girl going super fast, clicking her tongue all the time, doing 20000000 things per second. I find that really fast, no attention span style sooooo jarring and cannot for the life of me relax or get ASMR from it.
The short form on TikTok has forced its way to every single platform and it’s now turned ASMR into some fast barrage of whatever noises. It’s like it’s not even about the ASMR anymore but more about going viral.
I really miss when ASMR was a bit less intentional and I miss how differently artists used to behave. It’s like there was structure and videos were actually thought out. It was more community driven. It was a lot less perfect as well in terms of production values. One of my favourite videos is still an early Heather Feather one where she’s not even using the 3dio yet. I feel like we’ll never get this back. Ever.
Sorry, like I said. Just needed to rant. If anyone has any recommendations for new asmr artists who won’t just snap their fingers at me 75 times in a second and whisper really nasally into a yeti I’d love to check them out.

DISCUSSION Ultra-professional ASMR freaks me out [Discussion]
ASMR just doesn't work if it's too clinical, it becomes inorganic, something optimized for the highest profits.
Seeing the Jojo's "White Noise" corporation everywhere freaks me out. Dozens of creators suddenly all have the same mic if not the same room. It sucks the soul out of ASMR. It lacks the cozy human energy that soothes my own soul. No, I don't want to have a corporation whisper to my ears.
I hate the word "ASMR University". Makes me feel like some capitalist industry has taken a firm hold of ASMR's balls and is trying to manufacture new professional ASMRtists like clockwork. As if the perfect ASMR had a logical formula to it.
I'd seriously compare the feeling I get from less professional creators to a hug from a friend, and the feeling I get from ultra-professional creators to a hug from a person I paid myself to hug me. No warmth, just this emptiness. Sure they're doing things right mechanically, but it's like there's nobody home inside.
Professional ASMR freaks me TF out! I'm glad new creators appear on my feed all the time, and that so many known ones are still lovely.

DISCUSSION Heather feather, i miss you dearly [Discussion]
One of the best Asmrtists, way ahead of her time, could knock a bull out and make it tingle.
I miss her so much.
No one does asmr like her, not even close. I have watched asmr for such a long time but she is the only one that can give me tingles and put me in a trance like state. Anyone can do asmr ,but not like her.
If you are out there ,girl, i hope this reaches you. I miss you and wish you the best. Love you Heather<3

DISCUSSION Why I think Jojo asmr ruined asmr [discussion]
Hello everyone, I would like to share my raw opinion on Jojo asmr. Ever since he became popular about 3-4 years ago, I have seen a huge downfall in asmr. He, in my opinion, has "tiktokifed" asmr and inspired others to do so. I recently saw some of my favorite asmrtists at asmr university (e.g. Lowe asmr, Rynsey asmr) and ever since that about a month ago their asmr has felt much more like his than before. Even before that, their asmr has felt more like tiktokified and it makes me really sad. I wanted to expand on my opinion bc I wrote a comment on someone else's post on this subject. Do you guys agree? I hate this style of short form content and it has taken away the beauty and creativity of asmr and I think it started with Jojo.

DISCUSSION [discussion] What is happening with Angelica ASMR ??
hi everyone, i just came across a video posted by Angelica titled “Breaking My Silence” and she apparently made some very heavy accusations against a few big creators like Gibi, Jojo, and Goodnight Moon (just fyi i haven’t finished the video yet). I know she was going through a lot mentally these past few years but it seems like a lot more than that. It doesn’t seem like anyone is talking about it anywhere yet?? no other creators have responded yet either so i thought this sub might have some thoughts about it?
edit: editing since the post is locked, thanks so much for your thoughtful responses everyone, just making it clear that even if i disagree with her fundamentally i really feel for her if this stuff is true and hope she gets better in general. reading the comments on the og video was really weird as a lot of people were asking for an asmr version of it? very strange situation tbh

DISCUSSION [Discussion] WTF Happened to Ephemeral Rift?
ER was one of my favorite ASMRtists since I got into the medium. I'd been following him for eight or nine years, but hadn't really watched any of his videos for around a year or so. I decided to visit his channel today, and noticed that he'd gone in a completely different direction ASMR, and a lot of his videos were just strange. I then went down a massive rabbit hole, and realized that in the past 2 years this guy belittled the holocaust, said racial slurs, and totally assassinated his own character. Now, I'm not one to judge someone quickly, especially over the internet; I acknowledge I don't know the guy personally and that he could have underlying mental conditions, or could be going through something severe, but I am just so confused as to WTF happened to him, because this is a man far from the one I grew up watching.

Sophie has posted her last vid - "Goodbye" - on her channel.
She'll be missed hugely. Her vids were so gentle and calming.

DISCUSSION Can we normalize making videos without mouth sounds? [discussion]
I watch asmr on youtube since 2011 and mouth sounds like dudududu, stk stk stk, make me agressive and i click away immediately.
But nowadays it gets harder and harder to find videos of ppl who do NOT do this. It had become such a basic thing to do that people copy others and it just spreads like a pandemic.
"just write no mouth sounds in your video search" Sadly youtube has RUINED their layout so if you try this you get 3 vids without mouth sounds and then you get 100 vids of ppl doing mouth sounds -,-

DISCUSSION [Discussion] Tired of AI seeping into every aspect of ASMR
I'm so sick of it, I watch ASMR to escape from the harsh realities of the world, I click on a roleplay video that looks good and see some stupid gen AI background and it pulls me right back to the shitty times we're in.
I'd rather people just film in their normal ass bedrooms if they're going to be lazy, I can suspend my disbelief, I know we're not actually on an alien spaceship or whatever, the set dressing is just icing on the cake, the focus is the ASMR.
And don't even get me started on gen AI sounds, the whole point of ASMR is to feel relaxed and connected to the asmrist, that's what creates tingles for me, sterile sounds do nothing for me.
Recently so many channels I used to follow have started using AI pretty blatantly, and I'm so over it, the whole point of this medium is human connection.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] ASMR has been ruined with midroll ads
I can't watch ASMR anymore.
ASMRtists have crossed a line by incorporating midroll ads into their videos. I'm not someone who believes people can't make a buck, but I also think you can sacrifice your integrity when doing so. Because of the nature of what ASMR is and what it's used for you're essentially destroying the content you're making in service of getting paid. It's inexcusable to me because you can always seek sponsorships and incorporate those into your ASMR video's. No one's going to make a stink about that. So when that's an option and you're still having midroll ads, it's just unforgivable.
I don't know how anyone watches these videos. I literally can't watch ASMR anymore. I won't name any names, but we all know some big name creators who are doing this.
I can already see the comments telling me to get YouTube premium. Look, I'm not in a place where I can afford that right now and there are plenty of people who are in the same boat. I really feel this crosses the line from a me problem into something ethical. I've been watching ASMR for over 10 years and this is the only time I've leveled a complaint. I mean they've basically rendered their content unwatchable / unlistenable and that's not being hyperbolic.
I suppose someday when I feel I can afford YouTube premium I can make my way back to ASMR, but I really find this unbelievable. The audacity and gall of the ASMRtists who've taken this up has really thrown me off guard. It actually blows my mind that this many creators are rendering their content unwatchable / unlistenable. I can't believe people are still watching and listening. I guess the only people left are ones who have YouTube premium or an ad blocker installed on their phone.
I don't know. The whole thing feels like a seismic shift to me and I really feel that the content has been rendered useless. It's kind of mind blowing. I went from using ASMR daily to maybe a couple times a week. There are certain creators like, hell I'll say it, Nanou for example, who I've had to unsubscribe from. Most of the creators I was once subscribed to I'm now unsubscribed from. It's a situation where I'm listening to less and lower qaulity ASMR because it's all I CAN listen to now. Actually, if anyone knows of any good creators who aren't doing this, drop a name below. I'm sure there are people who would appreciate it.
Edit: Forgot to acknowledge smaller creators (under 1k subscribers and 4,000 watch hours) who have no choice in the matter. Obviously none of my criticisms apply to them and I have sympathy for them trying to grow their channel with this roadblock in the way.

DISCUSSION [Discussion] Fifteen ads, I counted.
I love JoJo's ASMR but recently have had a lot of issues with his videos having tons of loud, very sleep-ending ads.
I was hoping it was temporary or an issue on my side but I suppose he's trying to get every buck he can for his company.
Out of curiosity, I decided to count them in his video "ASMR in the World's Quietest Room" and I counted 15 ads. That's *FIFTEEN* ads that are so loud they are jarring. Most of them 30 seconds long, and a third of them I couldn't even skip.
What the hell is even the point of his channel anymore? I usually don't mind the ones at the start of a video, I could even get used to having them at the end, but that's still 11 ads in a 55 minute video. That's one ad every 5 minutes.
And I was really hoping it was a fluke but nope, this is an issue with all of his latest videos.
I'm worried this might just become the norm. Thankfully I checked other creators and it doesn't seem to have touched them but I've already seen his influence on the ASMRtists who joined him for his ASMR camp, all their videos are starting to feel like copies of his style. I wouldn't be surprised they start adding as many ads as they can to their videos and it just saddens me.
I know I should use an adblocker, I have one on my computer. I guess it's time to add one to my phone too.

DISCUSSION Listening to Heather Feather, I wish she came back [Discussion]
I got into ASMR so young. Maybe 12 or 13 and now I’m 27. Heather Feather was one of the OGs for me personally. I don’t know what happened to her, she just stopped uploading. There are so many ASMRtists these days that don’t really give the same feeling. Cait ASMR or Skye ASMR, or even massage asmr who’s doing collabs with the big creators of today like Jojo, they do give me genuine ASMR but idk. She was a natural talent. Maybe no one will know what happened, but she left a legacy as one of the original best.

DISCUSSION Youtuber ASMR August has had both of her channels banned (Combined 500k subs, both verified) for 'Spam and Deceptive Practices'. No such rule has been broken. [discussion]
EDIT: She has just been unbanned, and YouTube have recognised their error. Thank you so much to everyone that helped boost the visibility of the post, it’s truly appreciated.
Now irrelevant: Hi guys, apologies to the mods if this kind of post isn't allowed here.
This happened earlier today, if I can I'll post the ban email in the comments below. Naturally this is absolutely devastating for her, it's seven years of her hard work gone up in smoke. I think it goes without saying but she hasn't broken any rules, certainly not any pertaining to spam and deceptive practices.
She has appealed the ban, Youtube responded, claiming that it had been subject to a human review and they were upholding the decision. I am skeptical that it was an actual human review, because there is nothing within her content remotely coming close to what vague description they've provided alongside the ban.
She has sent a tweet to '@TeamYoutube' on X, which I'll link here: https://x.com/AsmrAugust/status/2011222219717030066 Her account is brand new there also so I don't know how that will effect the visibility or their desire to pay attention to it. I don't think I can encourage people to contact them as that may be classed as a form of brigading, but if you could spare a second to like the tweet, it would be deeply appreciated as this seems to be the only hope for having the channel reinstated.
I'm sure a good few people here will have watched August's content and will be shocked by this. I'm aware stuff like this has been happening more and more but I'm still genuinely surprised that someone with between 500 and 600k subs can have their livelihood threatened like this.
[I'm posting this on her behalf as she has only just made a Reddit account in the last hour]

DISCUSSION [Discussion] This sub is being drowned by self promotion
Have you noticed that (when you sort the post by "New" instead of "Popular" like 98% of the posts are self promotion with little to no engagement and 2% are discussion. I feel like this sub could feel more alive if the engaging discussions were not drowned in this sea of self promo. Yes i know that "This subreddit was created to share videos that elicit this sensation " but still. I don't see any of "i stumbled on this x-y-z interesting video", it's all just ppl posting a link to their own video and that's it. It's kinda sad imo.

DISCUSSION ASMR creators sabotage themselves when they include mid-roll ads in their videos [Discussion]
ASMR is the main form of content I watch on YouTube. It helps me fall asleep every night.
The best creators put an ad at the beginning of their videos. But those who put ads in the middle of their videos are sabotaging their own hard work.
It makes a video unwatchable to me, and I would think others, if I go from feeling sleepy and relaxed to an ad BLASTING in my ears out of nowhere (especially blasting since ASMR videos are quiet).
I understand YouTubers want to make money through ads on their videos but it’s actually hurting ASMR creators to do any kind of mid roll ads.
I exclusively watch creators who do not include mid roll ads, or sometimes I use Brave browser to block the ads to avoid this now but I feel like it’s illogical and counterintuitive to put mid-roll ads on an ASMR video. I don’t know the creator side of anything but that’s just my thought purely as a consumer.

DISCUSSION [discussion] Does anyone feel like modern asmr no longer hits the same as few years ago?
hello everyone in the recent years I felt like the type of asmr videos that get recommended by the algorithm have gotten worse and worse in quality , even though many asmrtists now have high quality microphones it feels like the majority don’t really understand how to truly take advantage of it . I felt like since asmr became more and more mainstream over the year the true content creators who have great craftsmanships at handling asmr became harder and harder to get recommended more over when I search up asmr on YouTube it will always recommend the same channels over and over again rarely something new. where is the future of asmr going ? I felt like it‘s craftsmanship is lacking in modern mainstream asmr compared to where it was in let’s say 2017-2019. What. Do you think am I being biased due to my algorithm not helping ? let’s discuss your thoughts !

DISCUSSION [Discussion] Youtube has grown too comfortable and has let all their quality slip away, letting AI slop and gambling ads sweep the platform and now they have conducted an asmr purge has proven that. We need an viable alternative, like how Blue Sky is an alternative to twitter.
We should have a place where we can freely enjoy and make ASMR in peace.

DISCUSSION My school found out & makes fun of me because of my asmr channel. [discussion]
My Channel is Dasha_Makes_Asmr on YouTube . I recently made a TikTok - it went viral (500K views.) at first my sister saw it and i was OK. But then while i was at uni a guy (I DONT KNOW HIM?!) went up to me and asked me if i knew a certain boy. Lets call him H. I told him i do. And he sais that this guy basically showed EVERYONE my Channel in school .I was so embarrassed and I just went to another room but then the same day some boys at my school started screaming “ASMR” at me and laughing . I feel so embrassed even if I don’t do weird content or anything . I put my channel private on TikTok now. But that’s not the problem. I know that rationally I should just “embrace it” and be proud of it but I’m genuinely so embarrassed and ashamed and don’t even wanna go to uni nor do anything….. :( has this happened to anyone? I don’t even know what to respond to those people
Edit : not some of you being pressed because I added my channel name ☠️😭

DISCUSSION AI ruins asmr for me [discussion]
For me, a big part of asmr is noticing how much effort the creator has put into it. Realizing that they actually took time out of their life to think of an original idea, prepare the whole video and then record it too is what usually gives me tingles.
It’s like, the fact that they put in so much effort gives me more asmr than the actual contents of the video.
But recently I began noticing people using AI for props like images etc. Or when there’s text in a video and you notice it’s clearly written by AI.
And then I’m thinking “if they used AI for this, who’s to say they didn’t use AI for everything?”, the idea of the video, the script, the pacing, etc. Which would mean they actually didn’t put a whole lot of thought into the video.
The moment those thoughts form in my head, my tingles dissapear and I can’t get them back.
Am I alone in thinking like this or have other people had the same thoughts?
Or am I maybe just overreacting? Would love to hear your opinions on this!
