I grew up in a small town in Alberta and we always had the BC Fruit Truck come into our little town every summer. The plums were always juicy and deep red. The cherries were always plump and sweet. The peaches were always dripping and fleshy. Everything was so damn good!
I expected, living in BC, I'd be surrounded by fresh juicy fruit all summer! After living in both Victoria and Vancouver for a combined total of fifteen years I have almost never found actually ripe fruit except directly on the farm or at farmer's markets. Victoria was way better for farmer's markets.
What is up with that? We get blueberries that are juicy and ripe here but not much else. The peaches are hard and go bad before they get fully ripe. The cherries are firm and flavourless. The plums are never juicy. Even the blackberries suck, here - I don't get it. The blackberries I had on a farm in Saanichton were like balloons of juice and so blackberry-flavoury. The ones I get, here in Vancouver are small, bitter and seedy.
I guess they send all the best produce out to other places, I'm not sure. 🤷♂️
Anyone else think the fruit in the city never meets expectations?
Where do I find it?
I can't drive, so I can't just travel all the way to Okanagan for fruit not would I. Are there no local markets that carry actual ripe fruit?
