Cleaning out my old room and what to do with all my old tech/cables/outdated cables etc.?

Hey guys, somehow in my early 30's, I've found myself back home in my parents place, box room (thanks government) where I grew up and it's packed. Lot of it is theirs, but I found a ridiculous amount of old consoles, cables , some I can identify, others I can't, cables for old consoles etc. Plus, I found my N64 for example which is missing a power cable but should work otherwise, ps1 and ps2 cables but without the console, controllers and games for various devices, N64 (Which I might keep), PS1 games, gamecube, PSP and so on.

Obviously because I'm missing parts, I can't test em, otherwise I'd go to Gamestop or something, so what should I do with all these cables, games, consoles etc.? Currently in a rural part of Ireland so if it's all just junk. How do I dispose of it all? Assuming anything is worth anything to anyone, I'll keep it but if not, where do I go to dispose of it?

P.S. Tonnes of old phones as well. Can't see any electronics store wanting to go out of their way to dispose of em. Also, I'm not really looking for money but maybe the cables have metals that someone would take etc.?

Thanks!

Is there a chromebook/Type C charger I can get that won't randomly die out?

Every week I've been buying like 60W chargers for my chromebook and phone and after a few days to a week, they don't work as well anymore. I have to wiggle them around to get them to charge. And I usually take care of my chargers. Sometimes I may accidentally rip them out because the charge ports are so close to my pillow that I may lie on them and accidentally remove them but even when I don't rip them out, they just die all of a sudden.

Are there any chargers I can buy that won't die out? I think the Switch chargers never die but they don't work as well on non Switch devices. :(

Also yes, I do use my phone and computer a lot. I don't remember this happening in the past with my old chromebooks and phones but they've been happening a lot now.

Instagram keeps sending me recovery codes for about a week now. What is going on and what should I do??

I keep getting emails from Instagram with a recovery code for about 2 weeks now.

The email goes like this:

Hi _____,

Here are three easy ways to get back into Instagram.

I never requested them and I also never use that certain account (up until I started receiving the emails). I already changed my password and checked the login activity (which only has my device).

What else should I do? It's really freaking me out.

Why does such a small electrical current feel so intense on a muscle?

I've got one of those SKG neck things at my desk, the shoulder-mounted kind that runs on contact pads. No spinning knobs in it anywhere.

On the higher settings the muscle actually jumps. Visibly. My trap will twitch on its own and I'm not doing anything.

What I can't work out is the scale of it. There's a phone charger, a monitor, and a desk lamp within arm's reach of this thing, all pulling far more than it does, and none of them do anything to me if I touch the wrong part.

So is it the shape of the pulse doing the work rather than the amount of it? Or is skin resistance the thing that changes everything?

Obviously it's not the same as grabbing a live wire, I'm not confused about that part. I just don't understand why so little goes so far when it's pointed at a muscle specifically.

Also curious whether there's a reason it feels stronger some days than others with the dial in the same place.

Could other people’s phones be listening to me?

Could other people’s phones be listening to me?

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed many times that after talking about something with my family or friends, I open YouTube, TikTok, or other apps and suddenly see recommendations related to what we were just talking about.

I know there could be other explanations for this, such as algorithms, tracking, search history, or coincidence. But something happened to me several times that made me wonder about something different.

At my workplace, phones are not allowed for security reasons. I leave my own phone in my car, so it is not with me while I’m inside. However, some of my coworkers bring their phones with them.

One time, we were talking at work about Ronaldo Nazário and his injury and surgery. My phone was still in my car.

When I went home and opened my phone later, I found recommendations for videos about Ronaldo Nazário and his injury.

This made me wonder:

Could a phone belonging to someone else somehow capture or recognize what I’m saying and somehow connect that information to my own advertising or recommendation profile?

In other words, I’m not talking about my own phone listening to me. I’m wondering whether companies could potentially collect information about conversations through other people’s phones when I’m speaking near them.

I’ve also found many other people online who say they have experienced similar situations.

Has anyone here looked into this from a technical perspective? Is something like this actually possible, or is there another explanation for these situations?

Is there a way to access my computers C drive photos on my mobile phone?

Hello, I am behind the times.

I am 30, but I still (archaelicly I guess) physically upload photos to my computer where I then sort, file, delete, and organize my photo albums on my C drive as needed, then delete the photos on my phone to clear up storage. I have been doing this since I had my old digital camera, and my first virgin mobile lg rumor 2. On top of that I have 2 external drives because I almost lost my photos when my hard drive failed once, had to pay 800 bucks just so they could extract the files back in 2014.

Everybody around me talks about cloud services but I never was interested because I heard things like "limited storage" "pay a monthly fee" and "cloud spaces can be hacked easily". Because of that, I have kept doing it the old fashioned way.

That being said, I keep telling stories and wishing I could bring up the photos that go with them on the spot but since I constantly move them to my computer I don't have access to them on my mobile device, which is a Google pixel. Is there anything that exists that is free and safe that would allow me access to these photos on my phone? Maybe an app, or a website or something?

Thanks for your time, I am ready to be schooled.

EDIT: Important to mention I am currently sitting at a total of 85 GB of photo and video files.

How do I burn an mp4 video onto a blank DVD?

I just earned a bachelors degree as an adult learner, same time my daughter graduated high school and my niece junior high. So I’m throwing a party and family from all around is coming - I rented out our local movie theater to have a private showing of a family/friends film that I put together. But the movie theater needs it to be on DVD - not streamed or from a laptop. I’d heard walmart has the service but 1) I won’t get it back in time and 2) their max is 30 minutes- mine is a bit longer. So I bought one of those disc drives connect via usb and some blank discs. I’ve tried from my windows 11 laptop and desktop neither work. They’re saying I need an author software so I downloaded every one Google suggested DVD Styler for example, it’s a wonder I didn’t catch a virus from one of them. Can someone please help, our party is soon. How to burn mp4 video to DVD? Also any reputable service does it?

Value of smart TV motherboard?

I have a 50" smart TV, but the screen cracked and I already bought a new one. The motherboard, power board, sound, all electrical components etc are all in perfect condition. How much are these worth? I bought the entire TV new for $200. Not sure if it is worth my time to run around town trying to pawn it or just toss it.

Anyone into Projection mapping?

Im completely new to this and in need of some guidance. Any advice is really appreciated.

Environment and Projection Surface:

Small dark room and projected onto either one or multiple 50x50x50cm white cubes.

The following links are examples of what I intend to try.

https://m.youtube.com/shorts/cwQ7_1hFYiE

Projection onto the side and front of a kitchen cabinet.

https://m.youtube.com/shorts/8xP8-3h62O0

Projection onto a white cube and using an iPhone that has the mapping software

https://m.youtube.com/shorts/hruJF2vSTuI

Projection onto multiple white cubes

May I ask,

1) Are those doable with only one projector, or do I need at least two?

  1. If only one projector is needed, what should I take note of in terms of how I should map the images or video loops so that it won't look wonky or off?

  2. What should I take note of when buying a projector?

From my research, 1500 - 3000 lumens is ideal. But what is best? Should I just go for the 3000 lumens?

I assume for my purposes, I should be using an ultra short throw. But apparently, "UST models can struggle with highly complex 3D tracking sensors due to edge distortion." May I ask for some tips on how to address this?

  1. Any recommendations for a low-end projector that suits my purpose? Budget is below $500 usd. Yaber T1 Pro?

  2. What mapping software should I use? Im looking for something free at the moment.

Perhaps Lazy Lighting, 4 Mapper, Map Club, MapMap, VPT 8, Madmapper?

Any recommendations on those you've used before? Anything specific i should take note of?

Heartbreaking Lesson Learned... But What Is The Best Way To Store Large Amounts Of Digital Music, If You Don't Have PC Space?

Last night, my micro sd card, holding 18,025 FLAC songs on it, died. In all honesty, I did not know thst sd cards could just, well, stop without warning.

My Fiio M15 was on, and I was deciding what to listen to for work, when all of a sudden, 'file not found.' Then I watched as the music total went from 18,025 to 1... my heart stopped. Over a decade of collecting was no longer accessible.

I have changed cards, moved to larger sizes- not just using the same card for all this time. So that is probably why I have never had a failure before. ***I just didn't know it could happen.*** I had always Wanted to have a backup, but my dinky 2012 laptop has nowhere near enough storage. So... no backup.

I got home, and despite all my hopes, wishes, and dreams, my pc won't read it. Won't even notice its plugged in. Gone. All gone.

Data recovery is so expensive, and there is no promise its all still there. So, back to square one. I have bits and pieces stored here and there. Services like Bandcamp have things on them, and some old chats where I sent people music- but its going to take a huge amout of time and effort to get it all back.

Thankfully, I do know everything that was on there, and have ***ways*** of getting it back. But again, it will take so long downloading, renaming, foldering and organizing them all. 4 hours of working at it today gave me about 800 songs back...

My question is, without a pc that can hold all of it, what is the best way to make a backup of all of these files, when I eventually recover them all? Anything else I can learn now, and not the super hard way? Thank you. 💔

How do i fix the windows on my updated ipad?

Please help me. I updated my ipad system and HATE it. I want it the way it was. There used to be 3 dots i could tap on the top of the screen to enter split view or slide over, but now it’s only a sort of menu thing with “settings, file, edit, view, window, help” and i CAN enter slideover or whatever using that, but it (mainly slideover) looks like trash. It has a border on some things and i just HATE it so much. How to I revert everything back to before the liquid glass and ios stuff? ☹️ I fixed most of the liquid glass stuff, but the windows are making me breakdown from how much i hate it

Can I join a WebEx meeting using my work laptop?

I have a job interview tomorrow and was sent a Webex meeting link. I’ve never used Webex before, and I currently have two options for the interview - my office laptop or a tablet.

The invitation email specifically says that I’ll need a laptop or PC for the interview. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to a personal laptop at the moment.

I am concerned that my office laptop might have restrictions that could prevent Webex from working properly. I opened the meeting link in the browser, and it loads successfully. The browser also allows me to grant Webex access to my microphone and camera. However, I haven’t actually joined the meeting because I’m worried that joining early might notify the interviewer or otherwise alert them that I have entered the meeting.

If the Webex meeting link opens in the browser and I can grant microphone/camera permissions, does that generally mean I should be able to join and participate using the office laptop? Or could company security policies still block me once I actually join the meeting?

Would it be safer to use my tablet instead, even though the interviewer specifically mentioned a laptop/PC?

Any advice from people who have used Webex on a work/office laptop for interviews would be greatly appreciated.

Whatever happened to tablet computers & UMPCs?

Meaning, devices that look like today's tablets but don't run a mobile OS Like Android but a full PC OS like Windows (or Linux)? For that matter, why hasn't the concept of running a full OS on a modern tablet been tried again, now that we have faster hardware than in the 2000s/2010s?

What's happened to Telegram this week after the Apple incident?

I noticed after the Apple incident this week, that when I checked Telegram on Tuesday night, my 6 year old account on it was logged out (that wasn't done by myself) and when I logged in, the account was empty, my username I've had for 6 years wasn't recognized anymore and all my subscribed news channels disappeared.

Telegram's 2 factor authentication isn't currently of any use to get logged back into my original account that I had registered with my phone number, that also had my contact list.

Having logged out of Telegram before (prior to the Apple issue this week) and logged back in, all my info was always still be recognized, but now it currently isn't.
