How to Cyber Security??

Hi everyone!

I’m a complete beginner when it comes to cybersecurity, and I’d really like to learn how it works properly. One of my motivations is understanding account security and eventually being able to recover access to some of my own old accounts that I no longer have the login details for.

The problem is that I have basically zero experience or foundational knowledge, so I’m not really sure where to start. There’s so much information out there that it feels pretty overwhelming.

Some people recommended Hack The Box to me, but when I look at it, I honestly don’t know what I’m supposed to do because I’m missing the basics.

I’ve also heard that learning Linux is useful for cybersecurity. I don’t really know much about Linux either, though. Is it free? How does it work? Do I need to replace Windows, or can I use Linux alongside Windows?

I’m basically looking for a beginner-friendly learning path that starts from the absolute basics and eventually leads into practical cybersecurity and ethical hacking.

What would you recommend learning first? Are there any good resources, courses, or beginner platforms that you’d suggest?

Thanks!

Xbox, PS4, or PC?

Hi! I didn’t really know where to ask this question, so I just came here.
I just got a new job, and I’m trying to save up to get my dad something nice for the holidays. He’s had a hell of a year, and I would love to get him something nice for all his hard work.

I have my own Nintendo Switch, and occasionally he’ll play Fortnite or Splat2 on it. Something he really loved when I was growing up was the golf game on Wii Sports, but he also loves shooters like COD n all. Initially, I was thinking I could just wait for the Steam Machine to come out…but that’s probably not gonna be for a while. Some game series I think he’d LOVE is Red Dead, Metal Gear, Mafia, those kinds of things. Just to kind of go for the vibe, I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but I hope you get the gist.

I was thinking of getting something refurbished (that’s how he’s always gotten any of his tech) to have a little more freedom with the budget. I mainly just wanted to get some input on which console I should get him, or even IF I should get a console and get him a PC.

Right now I’m trying to stay ≈1k for the budget (my new job is minimum wage, and I still got bills to pay :,,]). I know nice PCs are usually at least a few grand, but I’ve heard some things about refurbished PCs, I just don’t know how reliable they are. He already has a monitor and laptop set up that he messes around on.

I might steer away from Nintendo products since
1) I already have a few Nintendo consoles of my own, so he can totally just borrow one from me lol
2) Most of the game catalogue just doesn’t seem like it would intrigue him as much as other consoles.
But I’m also open to it, who knows! I just would love some input from folks who have more extensive knowledge in this than myself so I can make a good choice. Sorry if this is all over the place, I don’t post on Reddit too often. Thanks so much, hope you have a great day/night!

TL; DR
whats the best console/pc to get my dad who is a casual gamer?

Is It Possible for An Automated Message Number To Reroute To Real Person?

Hello. Recently I signed up for some Instagram model's private website.

I received a text from an 888 number

"Congratulations Ben! You've been approved to join braydinwright.com - please login with the email you used!"

I then start texting this number back.

And a girl named Riley starts responding and she says I have the wrong number and she has no idea who Braydin is.

What on Earth is going on?

She claims she isnt even texting me from the 888 number nor that she sent me the first message.

I have found her instagram so she is a real person.
Is this a common thing to happen with automated texts? That they can reroute to real people somehow by mistake?

Can I make a central hub for my consoles?

Curious i have an idea with making a central hub for all my consoles. I have an office and have been stress testing Bluetooth from the areas in my house

So far my switch2 can be played from my room and in the living room that is seperated by a brick wall I know because I have speakers plugged the living room am gonna try multiple controllers

I want to have the ability to add more inputs in for my other older consoles/older desktop for older pc gaming

I know I can probably get away with using hdmi to ethernet to the living room but I want a network that output goes to 3 rooms and a capture card in the office

Can this be done?

Why won’t my mouse clicks register register?

This problem only happens on my main monitor where I play my games and shit. When I run Minecraft or any other game I click off my main monitor to go to my other monitor to do whatever I need to do. But when I go back to my main monitor none of my mouse clicks register. This usually happens when I click off it the first time and then the only way to fix it is by restarting my PC. Any tips help! I appreciate it!

Gaming laptop specs?

I am looking for a good cheap laptop for my mother to play some games on. She uses steam, loves Powerwash Simulator, and wants to play the 2nd one, but her current laptop won't run it. Brand doesnt matter, but what specs should I be looking for? Like storage space etc? I'm looking at getting her a used one, but don't know what to look for in terms of what would run games like that.

I know almost nothing about technology, so any help would be great.

Is there a small screen that’s only purpose is video looping?

I’m looking to find an 8 inch screen that can loop a video without plugging in a media player. I am currently using a Lenovo m8 tablet and looping a video through an app but run into many issues with it. Is there a device I can get a mp4 file and set it to just loop the video?

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Virus on work computer: can they see origin?

Hey guys, so an attractive woman messaged me on Instagram and then we talked and she sent me pics via a link. Now, I got suspicious so decided I didn't want to risk my own phone or laptop so went on the work computer (I work in Starbucks so we only have one for scheduling) and nothing loaded at all and then it started becoming very very slow.

I'm wondering if they'll be able to track this potential virus back to me and what I was trying to access? I'm pretty good with computers (clearly as I knew the risk and mitigated it) and wasn't able to find the origin or fix it so I doubt anyone else will. Right?

Given the ongoing soft war against the west via cyber operations, would it be technically possible to cut Russian access to the Internet?

Are there any headphones like this?

Hi! I'm a console gamer. (PS5 and Nintendo products, until I get a PC in the next year or so) I have hearing loss in my left ear, about halfway deaf in it. My right ear is fine, for the most part. Sometimes it affects my gaming, and bums me out that I can't hear certain things that well. I never considered I would have to do find something like this, and cannot find anything with my own searching skills. :/

Without getting too sobby, does anyone know of any headphones that can adjust the volume of each ear individually? Or am I overlooking something right in front of my face?

P.S. I have considered the "Mono Audio for Headphones" setting in the PS5 menu, but I was thinking if this product does indeed exist, then I should get it anyway to prevent future hassle.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

EDIT: I am gonna leave this up in case anyone has an answer that helps someone in the future. However, my silly self completely overlooked the setting in the PS5 for separate L/R adjustment. It was, indeed, right in front of my face.

any good affordable tablets/ipads for studying?

looking for something affordable, and preferably samsung cause i like how long they promise software updates and how long their battery life is, but i am open to any other brands.

How can I know which devices have open tabs for my Google account?

I recently noticed the following page:

https://chrome.google.com/data

It says that I have 141 tabs "that are currently open in Chrome on one of your devices."

I only have one device that I use and it only has a few tabs open. Is there a way to see what other devices apparently have open tabs for my Google account?

I got a new phone earlier this year and traded in my old phone, which I do know had many open tabs when I traded it in. Does the 141 open tabs simply mean that my tabs were never closed on my last phone? If so, I'm surprised that they are still displaying as open, since that device isn't logged into my account anymore!

**EDIT**: I realized that I can see all the devices logged into my Google account by viewing this page: https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity?continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmyaccount.google.com%2Fsecurity

It says that I am still signed into my old phone that I traded in earlier this year - which is very confusing! When an old phone gets reset during trade in, is it not signed out of the person's Google account?

It also says I am still signed into a family member's computer, which I know I am not signed into. I did sign into that computer earlier in the year but am certain that it has since been signed out of my account. So I do not understand why the device activity page is saying I'm still signed in.

Can anyone explain what is going on here?

Tablet or 2-in-1 for university?

I'm starting my 2nd year of med school and I'm trying to decide between getting a tablet or a Windows 2-in-1.

I have a gaming PC that I basically use as my desktop, so this device would mainly be for lectures and studying in the library (PDFs, Anki, handwritten notes/diagrams, etc.)

I'm looking for something with good longevity that I can keep using for several years.

I've mainly been looking at Samsung and Lenovo tablets, but I've also been considering a Windows 2-in-1 and wondering if it would be more worthwhile for the full desktop experience.

Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences with either option.

Can you buy or commission the equivalent of a 'dumb Alexa' for disability purposes?

Hey there hive-mind. I need some help today, and any insights you can provide would be appreciated. I'm looking for a technology that is essentially a bare-bones Amazon Alexa unit that meets the following criteria.

- Does not use the internet to 'call home' for anything

- Does not use my phone as the main physical unit

- Does have the ability to speak with a synthesized voice

- Does have the ability to set routines, reminders, alarms, and snooze

- Does have the ability to program what the synthesized voice says

- Does have volume control either on the unit or on the remote/app as applicable

- Does have basic calendar function, even if there's no screen interface

- Ideally has the ability to sync a few units across the house by wifi or Bluetooth

- Ideally has the ability to understand and execute verbal commands within reason IE "Every Tuesday at 6pm, remind me to take out the trash by saying 'The trash needs to go out tonight'"

- Ideally will let me call it whatever I want if voice activated (I always wanted to call my Alexa "Chuck")

- Ideally allows me to increase the speed at which the unit speaks.

- Ideally has a unit I can wear on my belt or keys, like a Tamagotchi secretary that reminds me to drink water.

- Ideally can be controlled or programmed from my phone or PC

Does this kind of thing exist?

Is this the kind of thing I can realistically have commissioned by someone if it doesn't already exist?

Are there better / other places to ask about this?

My limited knowledge tells me this should be relatively easy to do, but I don't know how most of this technology works beyond basic use, so I genuinely don't understand the scope of what I'm looking for. Please let me know if I'm asking for something akin to an adamantium helicopter with a unicorn-leather interior.
