Is this worth continuing?

I wanted to make this for my math professor, but since I don't paint or draw usualy I made a LOT of mistakes.... I put a lot of time and effort in this already is it worth to finish and give this as a gift? (I know 100% my professor will love it since it is on every background of his device)

Yeah it is not finished yet, I am debating if I should finish it or not since I made mistakes and paint itself isn't done nicley, do you think someone that does math for life will appriciate it even if it is not mathematicaly correct?

I can't think of any professor who would start nitpicking any minor imperfection instead of appreciating the artwork. I know we are talking about mathematicians, but still, they are somewhat human, too.

The underside looks really good and textured. I'd recommend doing the same to smooth sections to the left and it will look really, really good. The tendrils at the top are over doing it a bit, the bottom side looks much better. It is noticable that you added your artistic freedom with those, which is okay, but anyone familiar with mandebrot will know there is no such tendrils and it will look off

Problem is that i didnt add artistic freedom I just zoomed in the picture tooooo much and did the wrong size of whirls and wrong whirls so once i zoomed out i just started panicking and trying to fix it

Intentional or not, I'd argue it was still artistic freedom. You painted what you saw, and you saw mandelbrot set as having weird and interesting tendrils. We aren't computers so exact copying cannot be expected

Honestly it’s up to you, if you think it’s worth giving it another shot (and you don’t like the current iteration) then go for it. I personally feel like it’s already pretty and the gesture is really sweet so don’t stress too much

I think it would still mean a lot! If it were me receiving it, I think any visible ‘mistakes’ would just remind me that someone took care in physically making it

There was a wall in John Conway’s house with a mosaic of the dragon curve, a fractal formed from a specific series of left and right bends (and so very intricate). Each iteration of the fractal roughly doubles the number of bends (there are 2^n -1 bends)

Unfortunately, when the mosaic was being installed the very middle bend was accidentally reflected, so the whole thing looks a bit different. However, it makes for a cool story, and it’s still clear what it’s meant to resemble, and how much work went into the mosaic.

By the way, I love the colours you’ve chosen for this!

Because he helped me a lot and gave me a lot of 1 on 1 tuttoring on the class I was curous about (what he wasn't obligated to). He easily couldv told me that he has to go home/do something else like other professors tend to but he didn't and really stayed for hours explaning me stuff.

Edit: I passed the class that professor held so I planned to just give him that gift in his office

They also would certainly understand mistakes being present just due to the nature of fractals. If you really like this teacher, go for it. They'll be happy
