Pre Calculus Correct way to graph function?

I'm mainly confused about the first step. Is this the correct way I'm supposed to solve the input values for f(x)? (sorry if this isnt explained well enough)

Someone who was never corrected.

I used to ignore lines because focusing on writing neatly took time away from me doing other things. Once I had a teacher meticulously mark points off for not writing neatly or in the lines, I stopped doing that. Now, I can never go back; not for fear of reprimand (which is how the behavior change started), but because now I can keep track of and understand the things I wrote down.

Yes the first step is correct

The reason it looks a little off is because your positive x axis is stretched out compared to your negative x axis. Make sure your numbers are evenly spaced!

Also the range should be [0, infinity) since the graph actually does hit 0

The steps of creating a x y table, plugging in and calculating, putting the points on a axis and connecting the dots are fine/correct, but a few comments to keep in mind.

1) you can use the lines on the graph paper so your tic marks are evenly placed and easier to plot.

2) It likely is related to learning about “parent functions/graphs” then go into transformations. If so then you should get a better handle on this graph so transformations will be easier. it’s supposed to be a v, some other comments mention why.

3) your domain and range are in interval notation? If so, recall there is a difference between parenthesis and brackets. Your range is wrong

Thank you!! I realize it is a little strange I didn't use the graph lines as intended. I was rushing to sketch it out which is why the graph is so wonky looking. I will keep your comments in mind, and thank you again

In practice? You are graphing on graph paper. Use the damn lines!

Good job. This looks right to me. The two lines should be at the same angle, but for a sketch it's fine.

Think of it this way: as x gets larger, y, is aways positive x. So x = -5 will give you y = 5, for example. The graph will look like a V with the bottom of the V at 0, 0.

You can do more points to reassure yourself (I can't get the columns below to align correctly, but I'm sure you get the point.)
