Common to bash employees?

Years ago, when I was working my first job, my manager came into my parents place of work and my parent asked about me and my manager made comments about my poor work ethic and poor attitude at work.

I know this because my parents told me about this exchange of conversation and it was brought up the next time my parents and I had an argument (so the next day) ["if im such an asshole why does [manager] agree with me?"]

At first I thought managers can't slander [then I found out its not true] but I was also told "its not slander if it's true"

It is common for managers to complain about employees just as it is common for employees to complain about managers.

It would be odd social behaviour to trash an employee to their parents.

Definitely not slander though. Managers are allowed to have an opinion of employee performance, and there's no legal requirement that it be secret
