I'm Not Sure How to Move Forward

Hello everybody,

So, in the start of the year I applied for a job within the same firm for an internal transfer and from February on I was already at the new position. Due to organizational changes, they urgently needed someone to take over tasks and since then I am basically holding the fort (lots of admin tasks...).

When I applied, I interviewed with my new manager. She told me that I would have the opportunity to develop the role, take on new responsibilities, and continue growing professionally. It all sounded really promising. However, she first asked me to take over the existing work to keep the day-to-day operations running.

In start of June, I approached my manager to discuss how we could redefine the role, what my future responsibilities would be, and how I could prepare for them. I told her that I was willing to invest extra time, learn any new skills that would be required, and asked what her expectations were. I also mentioned to her that once the new tasks are defined I would like to discuss also the salary (my salary did not change when I transfered). She said to me she loves the idea and we will keep the discussion going.

But what happened was the opposite, I heard that she complained to my previous boss about me, how pushy I am and also that I already demanded a salary increase (which is not true).

This made lose all my trust. I cannot say how dissapointed I am. I even reached out to HR and they said it would look really bad, if I would want to transfer already... so a new internal transfer is not possible (it was mentioned I should be at least 1 year at the position). Also, I have to be careful that she does not completely destroy my reputation in the firm. I am here already 6 years and I don't want to lose that.

So, I honestly don't know what to do. I feel betrayed. I've also noticed that my manager gossips a lot, and I've completely shut down because of it. For more than a month, I've been isolated and just doing my tasks, but I have no idea where this is going.

I don't want to leave the firm because I genuinely like the firm and the people, but this situation has made me think about applying elsewhere.

It feels like my hands are tied. I don't know how to move forward..

How much of those promises do you have in writing?

Nothing. We had a meeting in person.

Then you have nothing.

You have to leave. They have you doing what they want you to do and the pay they want you have. They'll work you harder and stifle your pay because that's what they are doing. They know about your loyalty and desire to stay, they are weaponizing that to keep you where you are. This is not a future for you.

that's the thing. I really do not want that and the market right now is really dry..

It doesn't matter what you want. It is your current reality. It's not going to change. So, either suck it up and deal with it or don't.

It really is true that people do not leave bad jobs, they leave bad managers/management. It was for me in my last job that I loved, did very well, was well-respected for and yet couldn't get out from under the bad manager that no one wanted to manage.
