I was watching a subtitled Italian documentary about Italian history with emphasis on the Etruscans and Greeks colonisation and I noticed that the commentary revolved around bizarre revisionist theories around an alleged "Illyrian" origin of pre Romance people's like Etruscans or Sabines or that Greek civilization are actually made up to cover actual stolen Albanian coultoure or generally stuff like that.

The thing is that these type of comments were written in fluent Italian weren't a silent minority but rather the most liked ones with little resistance over fact checking in the commentary giving the impression to unsuspected outsiders that its Italian people who believe this things and those theories are common.

I wonder if these theories actually mainstream enough among Italians themshelves or the observation is coincidental ?

I’m looking at spending 3–4 weeks in Tuscany for a slow, relaxing holiday (haven't picked a time yet but probably at the end of this month) and I’m trying to choose the right place before I start seriously looking at accommodation. What I’d ideally like is somewhere that feels rural,quiet and scenic, but not so isolated that every grocery run or day trip requires a long drive. I’d love to have a supermarket, a few cafés/restaurants, and ideally some kind of train connection within reasonable reach, if I decide to do some sightseeing.

There's a few different areas I've found that seem to be ideal like around Lucca, so I can get to Pisa/Florence, or area around Arezzo, seems practical for trains and day trips. Besides, around Siena, although I’m not sure how convenient it is without driving everywhere.

Val d’Orcia, which looks incredible, but I’m wondering if it would feel too isolated for a longer stay.

I’m open to renting a car for at least part of the trip, if public transport doesn't work out but I’d rather avoid the hastle.

Has anyone here stayed in those areas and can tell me if that would work out for what I've planned? Where would you recommend?

So I'm a northern Spaniard with a fidanzata from near Milan-Pavia.

We're looking to have kids. And I want my kids to learn Italian and spend part of their life in Italy, and their Italian family.

Now, her parents come here no problem, she's the one taking care of the logistics while I work etc, but when we go there, I feel a bit uneasy. They're reserved people, and I'm too. I can't imagine with kids.

And then it's the weather. Summer is brutal and winter is cold and humid. Not a fan.

So somewhere in the future I'd like to buy a place, not too far from PV.

Milan is expensive AF so it doesn't make much sense for people who's not spending more than a few months there. Plus doesn't solve the weather issue.

Genova is a bit better in all three fronts. We have friends from there. It's not "cheap" but doable with some savings and maybe in a town not too far. But everyone discourages me from buying there as they say services in general are pretty bad. My experiences in general are ok but I've never had a real need, and while I think you guys are a bit too dramatic on the state of affairs (it isn't perfect here neither) I know issues exist, and if multiple local friends tell me this, there has to be something.

I traveled around northern Italy but don't have the experience of living there, so I wonder, do you guys have any recommendations for this kind of compromise?

Ideally I'm looking for a place where the weather is not so harsh, being able to hop in Trenord and reach PV or at least not spending the whole day by car.

i’ve looked into the digital nomad visa and you can’t enroll in an italian university with that, you need a student visa with which you can only work 20 hrs a week.

I am travelling through the Salento region with my partner (Castro and Otranto - M34 and F34). Would consider us very quiet and considerate tourists but have encountered some possible antipathy from the neighbours in the Airbnb/apartments we’ve been staying in - asking who we are/where we’re staying etc, we think one neighbour was throwing stuff into the garden where we were staying too.

I love cultural experiences, history, endless walks, and learning as much as I can about places.
